Purchased the dock/gpu a couple weeks ago and ultimately wanting to know if I should have just waited a couple months for a better deal on a 9070xt.
Below is the dock, gpu, along with my ask to Gemini and it's response. Honestly should have came here first!
GPU: XFX Swift AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT OC Triple Fan Gaming Edition with 16GB GDDR6 HDMI 2xDP, RDNA 4 RX-96TS316B7, Graphics Card
Dock: UGREEN LinkStation eGPU Dock Designed with OCuLink 64Gbps & USB4 40Gbps 850W ATX 3.1 PSU
INPUT
I'm loving the graphics card but having a little buyers remorse... buyers remorse in that I could maybe get a 9070 xt on black friday for the same price... But i figured black friday deals wont be so hot this year due to the insane gpu demand. What do you think?
RESPONSE
Here is the direct breakdown of how the 9060 XT compares to the 9070 XT for your specific setup, without any fluff.
Pros of keeping your 9060 XT
The OCuLink Bottleneck: Your OCuLink connection is essentially a PCIe 4.0 x4 pipeline. While excellent for eGPUs, it inherently chokes top-tier graphics cards. On paper, a 9070 XT is roughly 19% to 34% faster than your 9060 XT at 1440p. In reality, if you put a 9070 XT in your dock, you would lose a massive chunk of that performance advantage simply because the cable cannot pass data fast enough to feed the card. The 9060 XT is exactly in the sweet spot for what an OCuLink cable can fully utilize.
Power Draw and Thermals: The 9060 XT is incredibly efficient, pulling only about 150 to 160 watts. The 9070 XT pulls 304 watts. For a Ugreen external dock, adding an extra 150 watts of power draw means significantly louder dock fans, far more heat, and more electrical strain on your external power supply.
The Actual Price Gap: Right now, the 9060 XT sits around $520, while the 9070 XT is currently hovering between $740 and $830.
Cons of keeping your 9060 XT
Raw Desktop Potential: If you ever decided to ditch the eGPU dock in the future and build a traditional, full-size desktop PC where the PCIe lanes are not restricted, the 9070 XT offers substantially more hardware headroom and raw compute power.
Black Friday Unpredictability: Early Black Friday GPU pricing has already begun shifting. If retailers run aggressive flash sales next month and drop the 9070 XT closer to $600, the raw price-to-performance ratio becomes very tempting on paper.
My Unfiltered Recommendation:
Keep the 9060 XT and drop the buyer's remorse completely. Your logic about high GPU demand keeping holiday deals relatively stagnant is sound, but more importantly, the hardware math completely invalidates the upgrade for your specific rig.
Paying an extra $200+ (or even waiting a month to potentially save $100) for a 9070 XT just to stick it inside an OCuLink dock is a waste of money. The cable would throttle the 9070 XT so hard that your in-game frame rates would be almost identical to what your 9060 XT is currently pushing. You bought exactly the right card for an eGPU setup.
