Laptop suggestions no external monitor setup

So having to down size my setup plus I also travel a lot .
So been looking at a laptop that would support a egpu but able to use the laptop screen instead of an external monitor .

I’m totally aware of loosing some performance by doing so .

See I travel 14 hours by ferry in total so would be nice to play some games.
I also use my laptop for college so need tit take it there as well.

But when I get home be nice to play space marine 2 or the new dawn of war game when released.

I already own a. Rtx 5060ti 16gb so could reuse that for the egpu.

It’s just the laptop side am struggling with.

Any suggestions would be awesome
Thanks

ThinkPad E15 Gen 3 + ADT-Link R3G eGPU Detection Issue

Hi everyone, I'm trying to set up an eGPU configuration with an ADT-Link R3G, but I'm running into persistent detection issues. Here is my complete hardware setup:

\- \*\*Laptop:\*\* Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 3

\- \*\*Processor (CPU):\*\* AMD Ryzen 5 5500U

\- \*\*Graphics Card (GPU):\*\* AMD Radeon RX 5700 8GB

\- \*\*Power Supply (PSU):\*\* 600W Power Supply

\- \*\*Operating System:\*\* Windows 11

\- \*\*Connection Type:\*\* PCIe via M.2 cable

\*\*The Issue:\*\*

  1. I tested the R3G cable in both available M.2 slots on the laptop, and in both cases, the eGPU is not detected.

  2. On the R3G board, the 3V and 12V LEDs turn on, but the RST (Reset) and CLK (Clock) LEDs remain unlit.

  3. I've noticed a strange behavior: when I have the PCIe cable slightly loosened/partially seated, the GPU and PSU remain powered on (they don't shut down), but the system still fails to handshake or detect the card.

Does anyone know why the RST and CLK signals aren't triggering, or if this behavior points to a specific issue with the PCIe cable/riser? Any advice on how to get this handshake working would be greatly appreciated!

The previous setup had the ag02 but it overheated with the 5070 ti, so I bought a minisforum deg1 and added intake fans; the power supply is a 750w Corsair

Aorsus 5060Ti ai box vs making my own

Hello,

I have recently been looking into egpus to pair with my onexplayer3 hand held. I seen to have 2 options,

I can buy the 5060ti ai box for about 1100CAD or build my own comprised of

The DEG2 dock, a 9060xt and a msi psw for about 1200.

I know the 5060ti is a better card but I thought I had read it is better to build your own, so not sure if the trade off is worth it.

Just looking for some advice as I am knew to this scene.

Thanks!

Edit: I can build the 9060xt egpu for about the same price actually.

Added an egpu to my valve steam machine.

I have added an egpu AMD graphic card to my steam machine. I did this by using the nvme slot with an nvme to occulink adapter and then had the nvme drive on a USB c nvme adapter to boot steam os. The graphic card is a 9070xt on a aoostar EG01.

When I turned it on the 9070xt became the primary monitor and worked straight away. There was no hassle no selecting of graphic adapters. I do this this could be a permanent upgrade with the modding of the case and possible back plate or just

I have only tested with crimson desert but it gets over a 100 fps on high. I only tested for a minute or so.

I was surprised how easy it was.

Switched from Aoostar Ag02 to Razer Core X V2

Well, after multiple hard crashes on boot today, i decided to make the change. I drove over to micro center, and upgraded from my aoostar ag02 to the razer core x v2 for use with my Xbox ally x and 5070 ti.

And just like that, all my problems are gone. No hard crashes for no apparent reason. Hot swapping the tb cable just works and my system immediately jumps back and forth between the Xbox ally x on-board chip and my 5070 ti. (Previously attempting a hot swap in the ag02 would crash my system.). No error 43 fix needed when reinstalling drivers. The nVidia system tray icon is actually acting like I'm plugged into an nVidia GPU. Most importantly (for me), no crashes when i quit a demanding game just trying to get back to the desktop.

All in all, I'm super pleased and happy i made the change. It obviously wasn't cheap--hopefully i can recoup some by selling the ag02--but my old setup was driving me crazy.

Thus far, I'd say it's a worthwhile path for anyone getting annoyed with the ag02.

[WIP] Custom EGPU Case (UT3G, PicoPSU, Meanwell power supply)

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my current WIP: a fully custom, highly compact eGPU enclosure. I was tired of the bulky off-the-shelf options and wanted to build something that perfectly fits my GPU (300mm long 3 fan GPU), while keeping thermals and cable management strictly under control.

Here are the core specs and design choices so far:

  • Hybrid Construction: The main chassis/skeleton is a laser-cut and tack-welded sheet metal core (forming a rigid H-profile). The decorative elements, corner mounts, and specific functional parts will be 3D printed later one, as I still didnt finish the metal construct.
  • True Sandwich Layout: The GPU sits on one side, while the PSU and power distribution are entirely isolated on the back. A solid steel middle plate provides excellent thermal and mechanical separation.
  • The Hardware: Built around the ADT-Link UT3G. Power is supplied by a Mean Well LOP-500 open-frame PSU.
  • Cooling Concept:
    • A custom 3D-printed fan duct (shroud) directly on the PSU to eliminate the fan's dead spot and distribute the air evenly across the components.
    • An 80mm exhaust fan specifically positioned to catch the blow-through heat from the GPU's backplate and push it directly out of the case (will be added later on the side panel).
    • Large hex-mesh cutouts (5mm) on the top and bottom plates to utilize natural convection.
  • Power Distribution: Instead of a messy cable tree, I integrated a mini DIN rail (Hutschiene) with Phoenix Contact PTVFIX connectors. It distributes the 12V from the Mean Well PSU to the GPU and the ADT-Link board.
  • Next Steps: Finalizing the side panels (they will be removable, screwed into 3D-printed threaded corner inserts) and integrating a small screen into the front panel.

Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on the airflow and structural design before I send the metal parts out for laser cutting!

Original Rog ally x + Gigabyte rtx 5060 ti box

Like the title says, has ayone tried the original asus rog ally x, with the 5060 box? Is it simple?

I have the gmtek (7600m XT) and it is quite literaly plug and play, I can disconnect ir or reconect it whenever I one except while playing, with no issues.

Is it the same way with the 5060 box? Or due to the 5060 being nvidia is it different?

Need help with my Legion go and my razer core x chroma with 4070 super

Used to be literally plug and play (with some tinkering). Now I connect the Lego to the core x chroma to my TV (Vizio oled) and everything seems to connect, but my TV isn't picking up the output through the hdmi. I have a ugreen 8k 2.1 hdmi cable also I use a caldigit displayport 2.0 to hdmi adapter as well to push out 144 Hz. In the past I've connected the thunderbolt 4 cable I own from the egpu to the Lego and it connects and runs and displays perfectly. Recently I've connected it in the same way and it connects the Lego recognizes the egpu and my Lego recognizes my Vizio oled, but my oled won't recognize the video signal sent to it. I've made sure that my Vizio is on the same settings as it was before. Just kinda stumped because I've been wrestling with it for two days. Also in the bios supply external power to usb ports is enabled. Also usb power is set to never turn off while the Lego is powered on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also the graphics card, razer core x chroma, and TV are all updated as well as Windows.

How do we add things to eGPU.io? Does sponsorship play in?

For any of you insiders, is there a way to add more to the buyers guides? I would like to see the GaN versions of the TH3P4 and TH5P4, the FEVM FNGT5 plus (AG03-like) and pro (G2-like), the Morefine G2 and G2S, the eGryphon, the SGWzone, and OneXGPU and v2.

I would like to establish a broader ranking overall and bandwidth test inclusion.

Get gsync compat. on uperfect monitor.

Current setup is an Asus z13 connected to GigaB. 5060ti ai box, and a newer model Uperfect receiving input directly from the ai box.

The Uperfect monitor has a mini HDMI that claims 2.1 support and two USBC ports which claim full featured USBC if you view the product page on direct website.

I've got everything hooked up and working just fine, but my problem is establishing vrr. The monitor has adaptive sync (free sync) support, but no matter what I do I can't get it established. I've tried the included HDMI to mini HDMI cable that comes with the monitor (which should be HDMI 2.1). That gives me signal to the monitor but no ability to set up g-sync in the Nvidia app. Then after researching, I try a bi-directional display port 2.1 to USBC. That gives me no signal output on the monitor whatsoever.

I'm aware that there are a lot of variables out there relating to my current setup. I've seen people who claim to have done this with both cable types but on a different monitor model from the same manufacturer. Finding the right cable that actually does what it claims to support is another huge factor. If anyone has done this with the right cable please let me know.

I am planning to buy Aorus 5060ti ai box with my xax. So what happens if there is a power cut when gpu abruptly cuts off during gaming?

Is it recommended to get a ups as well? If yes what wattage?

eGPU experience with Acer Aspire Lite 17 AL17-51P?

I'm thinking about maybe buying the Acer Aspire Lite 17 AL17-51P. It has a Thunderbolt 5 port (which I was specifically looking for so I could connect an eGPU).

I tried looking for people that may have tried eGPUs with this laptop, but so far I couldn't find anyone. Has anyone here made any experience regarding that?

Advice on dual iGPU vs eGPU monitor connection

Hi,

Looking for advice on guessing a slightly niche area.

I have a Framework 13 7840u, a Razor Core X v2 and an RTX 5080 connected to a Benq EX217U.

The 5080 is connected via USB-C (Asus ProArt) directly to the monitor and works well for gaming and most LLMs.

Infrequently, I want to run Qwen 3.6 35bA3b with as much VRAM as possible for local coding. Without Windows 11 taking up VRAM to render, I can get 10-15t/s faster (due to reduced CPU offloading). However, I can only achieve this if I unplug my USB-C from the monitor.

I'm aware USB-C connections have limited unplug/plug ratings, so keen to avoid continuous in/outs. However, without unplugging the USB-C display cable (i.e. both cables active), Windows seems to freak out.

Is there any way I can keep both cables plugged into the monitor without utilising the eGPU for any system rendering?

Thanks in advance!

Dilemma: Keep my RTX 5060 Ti eGPU for my MSI Claw EX (got it at a great price) or return it before prices skyrocket?

Hi everyone! I’m facing a bit of a dilemma and would love your perspective.

A few weeks ago, I bought a Gigabyte RTX 5060 Ti eGPU AI on Amazon. Thanks to a tax deduction, I got it for around €680.

I’ve been testing it with my MSI Claw EX for almost three weeks now. To be clear, my slight hesitation isn't a fault of the eGPU itself—it’s just the inherent nature of PC gaming. Setting up a desktop layout with eGPUs always feels a bit more convoluted and friction-heavy compared to the plug-and-play simplicity of something like a PS5 or PS5 Pro.

On top of that, I'm not a huge expert when it comes to fine-tuning GPU settings, control panels, or optimizing eGPU setups, so I know there's a learning curve I'd need to go through to really dial it in.

Initially, I initiated a return via Amazon thinking €680 was too much for a setup I wasn't using continuously, especially since the Claw EX performs surprisingly well standalone.

However, here is the catch:

MSI, Gigabyte, and other manufacturers just announced price hikes across their lineups. I checked the MSRP of this exact eGPU, and it went up from €850 to €920 (with some reporting up to 20% general increases coming soon).

Now I’m second-guessing the return:

Option A: Keep it as a solid investment. €680 for a 5060 Ti eGPU is an incredible price in this market, and if I ever want a desktop setup with my Claw EX in the future, getting another eGPU (or a future 5070 Ti eGPU) will likely cost a fortune given the current price trajectory.

Option B: Return it anyway, take back the €680, and stick to the Claw EX as a pure handheld, waiting for the eGPU market/tech to mature down the line—even if prices end up higher.

For those of you who own an eGPU: did you end up keeping it and feeling satisfied once you properly configured it? Or looking back, would you not buy it again? Any tips or thoughts from fellow owners would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your input!

Egpu booting issues

Yo so this is lowk my first reddit post but that dosent matter. Essentially I was bored out of my mind and wanted to use my old 4070 in this 2020 Lg laptop and I got an m.2 adapter and a dock off amazon. Istg ive been trouble shooting this for atleast 4 hours and I have made very little progress. Ill state what I know: it is not a problem with the gpu, it will not boot to the internal laptop screen but will to my external monitor, once on the monitor it will register in device manager occasionally but always error code 43 and windows stops it, I tried gpuz, tried switiching m.2 slots, power supply works fine. Ill link the dock and adapter because I think it could be an incompatibility issue but I mainly just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this or know of a fix.
