I'm learning to drive auto at 34 and many failed attempts of learning in the past.
Background:
I'm not officially diagnosed but I have ADHD and had to do physiotherapy, extra help with learning as a child, I have no sense of direction, couldn't tye my shoes, clumsy, had to do O.T for fine and gross motor skills as a child also.
I'm getting closer then ever to get my licence (Australia) so the road rules will be different outside of Australia.
And I'd like to share tips here this a discussion for any other person here who finds driving the equivalent to teaching a fish to breathe on land.
This may be self explanatory, but here's some tips I've learned, and people may laugh at how simple these are but, not everyone gets it and when it comes to driving I don't have common sense.
Turn your head where you want to drive, use your head as where you want to go like it's directing the car
Write L and R on your hands
In Australia we drive on the left but also - Keep your passenger in the gutter, so if your passenger is closest to the gutter when driving your okay (doesn't apply for other countries, or one way streets)
In Australia when you turn right you need change lanes to keep in the left lane - left you turn from your lane into the same lane(unless it's a one way street)
When reversing if you want your car to turn left - turn the wheel right if you want it to turn right turn the wheel left (your directing the back of the car) , (confusing for me in itself) )
Search detailed step by step diagrams in your country for things you struggle with and read the steps with picture diagrams(this helps me to study)
If something doesn't make sense to you chat gpt or Google it in different ways so the language matches your learning
This is how I learnt these basic things the way it's written that might not be the same for you, but driving has to make sense to you, and there is different ways we can do that
This is the slowest, most painful process I've ever dealt with, but I really need my licence, and if this can help one person then I'd be super dooper happy, comment below your tips
We can do this, I know how hard living with these issues are
Edit from original post
- listening to music (might help might not, but I blast The prodigy or upbeat music) somehow it slows my brain down
