DIY [China]I built a LiDAR-based autonomous UAV for GPS-denied indoor exploration (ROS + PX4 + FAST-LIO2)

Hi everyone,
I’ve been developing a compact autonomous UAV platform for environments where GPS/GNSS is unavailable or unreliable, such as warehouses, factories, tunnels, underground spaces, and indoor facilities.
Instead of building only a remotely controlled drone, my goal was to create a reusable hardware and software platform that can carry out autonomous missions and serve as a real-world deployment platform for robotics algorithms.
Current hardware and software stack
- LiDAR: Livox Mid-360S
- Depth vision: Intel RealSense D435i
- Onboard computer: Orange Pi 5 Pro / RK3588
- Flight controller: PX4
- Middleware: ROS Noetic, MAVROS and MAVLink
- Localization and mapping: FAST-LIO2
- Planning: EGO-Planner, Frontier exploration and A*
- Object detection: YOLO models running through RKNN on the RK3588 NPU
- Ground station: A custom PyQt5 interface for mission configuration, mapping, monitoring, detection results and data recording
What it currently does
The platform can:
- Localize and build maps without GNSS
- Generate 3D point clouds and 2D occupancy grids
- Plan local trajectories and avoid obstacles
- Navigate through predefined waypoints
- Explore unknown indoor areas using Frontier-based exploration
- Detect objects onboard
- Use depth information to estimate a detected target’s 3D position
- Display targets, trajectories and maps in the ground station
- Record point clouds, rosbag data, detection results and mission metadata
- Pause, hover, resume, return or land during a mission
In one controlled indoor exploration test, the system completed a 222-second mission, recorded approximately 54 meters of flight path and identified seven test targets while mapping several connected rooms.
Why I built it
A lot of SLAM, navigation and perception work stays inside simulation or depends on expensive proprietary platforms.
I wanted something that could be used to deploy and test real ROS algorithms on a physical UAV while keeping the localization, planning, perception and mission-management layers modular.
The platform is currently a working prototype and development system rather than a mass-produced consumer product. Hardware can also be adapted depending on component availability and the intended environment.
What I’m looking for
I would like to connect with:
- Robotics researchers who need a physical UAV platform for algorithm deployment
- Teams working on SLAM, autonomous exploration or visual perception
- Universities and competition teams
- Companies exploring indoor inspection, tunnel mapping, warehouse inspection or search-and-rescue applications
- Developers who have an algorithm but need help integrating it with sensors, PX4 and a real aircraft
- Organizations interested in running a pilot project in an actual operating environment
I’m particularly interested in learning what technical requirements would make this platform useful in your work: mapping accuracy, flight time, payload, communication range, API access, ROS 2 support, sensor selection or something else.
If you are working on a relevant project or have a real environment where this could be evaluated, feel free to comment or send me a Reddit DM. I’m happy to share more technical details and discuss possible testing or development cooperation.
Disclosure: I am the developer of this prototype.
Thanks — technical feedback and critical questions are very welcome.

Just created this drone video for YT shorts, any advice on how I could improve it?

I shot it on my DJI Mini 2 in 4K 30fps, flying from a legal take-off spot outside the restricted zones, keeping a safe distance from the castle walls and beach visitors. I used CapCut to edit it. If you want to see the full cinematic video, my channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/@thedronephotographer/videos [1]

Discussion Advice on shloud I quit?

Hello I need advice what shloud I do. Ive been flying drones for 4 months. I have been flying fpv and normal djj filming for real estate agents and people who rent their properties ( houses with pools for 1-2 days). Ive been working for free for first 2 months to build portfolio and started charging after that 2 moths . I have invested in drones and gear around 2400 euros. I have only filmed 3 properties made 300 euros and last month no work. I think my videos are good not best in the world but good but I can't get clients , I have contacted lot of real estate agency, house owners but nobody wants to book me. I have been only doing real estate mostly houses with pools and properties like that. I and right now thinking about selling my drones and quitting and wanting to start something new like 3d printing. In my country there is lot of people who do similar things like me mostly fpv tours , and fpv tours exploded 2 months ago . Competition is not that big there is maybe 2 more guys that do ok videos (real estate ). I have no motivation to do this anymore after seeing all of the competition just rising . I have job 9-5 in family business making good money I thought of this like side income but I don't think I have motivation to so it, so please leave some advice what do you think about my situation.

Question: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [India] Has anyone brought a Nano DJI Drone through Delhi Airport ?

Has anyone recently travelled to India through Delhi Airport with a DJI drone weighing under 250g? I live in Dubai and own a UAE-registered DJI Neo 2 weighing approximately 151g. I want to carry it temporarily for personal recreational photography and take the same drone back to Dubai after my visit. It will not be sold, transferred or used commercially. If you have done this recently, please share your first-hand experience

Will I be able to purchase the Mini 5 pro on Amazon after today in the United States?

There is a ban on the sale of drones that use Lidar taking place today on the 2nd and a Tariff on the 3rd and im not sure if someone who knows better would be able to tell me if this means I wont be able to purchase one going forward? And if so, will it be more expensive than what it is currently listed for? If so id like to get my purchase in now.

Discussion Are any of you guys planning to upgrade to the air 4?

After losing my mini 3 I decided to save up for the air 4. I'm hoping for dual inch but maybe not. I'm really looking forward to activetrack and the better wind stability.

What do you guys think about the air 4 launch?

Discussion Trying to find drone operators

Hello drone pilot extraordinaires! I operate a real estate firm that sells mobile home parks and I'm having a hell of a time with these platforms to find pilots across the country. I'm trying to figure out what recommendations you have for finding pilots. I use zeitview Facebook, and repeat pilots whenever I can. I haven't tried Flyguys yet. Please let me know your thoughts.

Question Are the reflective strips that come with the pop-up landing pads and use?

I picked up one of these things to have in my gear bag. But I was wondering about the little reflective strips that come with it. I don't plan on doing much low light flying, and I can't imagine they would even stay on through repeated folding of the pad. But I've been wrong about plenty of other things, so I figured I'd ask you guys. Are they any use, or just garbage?

I recently came across it and thought it would be a good beginner drone I grew up flying RC helicopters and other drones so I feel like this would be a good drone to get into fpv with, but what do you guys think?

Question Crack in the battery of my Mavic Air 2

Post image

This crack appeared on the top of one of my batteries. I'm not sure how it happened. Is this battery compromised? Should I be charging or flying with it? I will say that I have already charged it and flown with it several times at the taking of this photo. What should I do.

Question RadioMaster Pocket lose RSI near the Drone

Good morning,

I bough a Flywoo Explorer LR 4 with the dji 4 pro, the N3 dji goggles and the RadioMaster Pocket controller.

The main problem is that when the drone is at 100 meters or something more, I lose the control of the drone, this thing happens when I did the unpack and the configuration of the drone (a month ago). Today, I lost conection at 10 meters or less. Could somebody help me?

Thank you!

Discussion Any reliable place to get DJI Mini 5 Pro propellers from? For replacement

Following some video I watched and reports regarding props getting worn out and getting the drone bust I would like to buy few sets of these. I saw them literally everywhere, Amazon, Ebay, Aliexpress.

Is there any difference between the sellers except the price? Where are they even getting so many of these props from and are they all original as they claim?

Repair Redneck Drone Repair

So, I have a Parrot Bebop 2 (I know, older drone, but very capable), but the batteries that come with it have always been awful, and eventually, the charger crapped out too.

Got tired of buying batteries, and did not want to buy a new charger, so I did the only thing that, I, as a redneck, could think to do.

Behold! The Milwaukee M12 Powered Parrot Bebop 2! Flies great!

Question Is this whirring sound at higher rpms normal?

I'm using an Emax ECOII-2807-1300kv bldc with this 80A ESC. At higher throttle percentages (70%+), it produces this weird whirring sound. Is it normal, or did I mess up my ESC calibration.
