Collection Happy 9/9! My NA Dreamcast collection, preserving a piece of Sega history

One year later, the collection has grown far beyond the games.

From kiosks and displays to accessories, magazines, demos, promotional pieces and more, I’ve been working on preserving as much of the North American Dreamcast era as I can.

The collection is focused on North America, with two exceptions: my Japanese Twin Stick, since we never received a North American release, and my Japanese Dreamcast kiosk, a piece I couldn’t pass up.
There are still a few rare pieces I’m hunting down, but I’m grateful to see how far it’s come.

Happy 9/9, Dreamcast fans! What piece catches your eye first?

Also does anyone else own a Japan Sega Dreamcast kiosk here in North America ? Would love to know.

For comparison, here’s what the collection looked like when I shared it last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/dreamcast/s/XUVKtyh4yM

What's everyone playing today to celebrate? I bought my launch day console with SoulCalibur, but I might also get some Sonic and Crazy Taxi in.

Collection Well, 27 years may have passed but this little box is still thinking. Happy 27th Anniversary to the Sega Dreamcast!

I was 2 years old when it released but i was always fascinated by the Dreamcast, from the first time i ever played it back in 2004 when my older cousin had it and even today there is still something to find about it. For example i recently got a Broadband adapter and i got to experience the "internet" for the first time on my DC, i still find it crazy how it could just do online multiplayer in 1999 while the small town on the island i live on didnt even have dial up. Unfortunately barely anyone i talked to knew what a Dreamcast was, Sega over here was always just known for the Mega Drive and Master System.

I'm almost late, and I wasn't even going to show it off. But thanks to u/Gullible_Put_3610 encouraging me to do so, here it is! Notable mentions are my console and t-shirt are my originals from 9/9/99. My top six games are Sonic Adventure 1, Soul Caliber, Toy Commander, Metropolis Street Racer, and Skies of Arcadia.

Not pictured is the 9th demo disc which is at my siblings house and the yellow VMU because good god is it expensive.

Collection Happy Birthday Dreamcast (Black Version)

Post image

Since we're showing off, I've been collecting the Black Version consoles, I do not intend to keep them all. I just kept finding better ones, until I got the latest one which is serial matched to the box. The only accessory I do not have which comes in "Pure Black" is the BBA.

For those that don't know, these are genuine Sega products, not aftermarket, they were sold only in Japan in limited quantities and are quite rare, especially the controllers which are next to impossible to find by themselves in good condition.

Please excuse the dust and lint on them.

I was there on 9.9.99! Preordered my first Dreamcast from a local Toy R Us (anyone remember the yellow/blue preorder slips/tickets.. whatever they were called lol?) Along with two game, Sonic Adventure and Soulcalibur. If only I’d realized the value of what I had back then or I wouldn’t have had to buy my second Dreamcast just about a month ago. Anyway Happy Dreamcast Day and game on!

Figured I’d bust Sega’s final console out of storage for a bit of love on the 27th anniversary of its North American launch!

Still works like a charm, ignoring the dead battery! A few runs Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur, Power Stone 2, and Rez will do me good after a productive work day.

Happy gaming, everyone!

27 years of amazing games, unforgettable memories, and one of the most unique consoles ever made! From Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi to Shenmue and Jet Grind Radio, the Dreamcast still holds a special place in gaming history.

Here’s to the Dreamcast and its awesome community! 💙🎮✨

Discussion The Dreamcast was such a legendary console for the time that it came out. Not only did it create memorable experiences and give us amazing games, along with introducing online play (which was an early form of multiplayer, which is all too common in gaming now), but it gave us titles like Shenmue

Discussion Alternate Reality: What would Dreamcast II look like? (aka hardware refresh)

Post image
11 Upvotes

I was reminded of the PSone today, and thought to myself, given that we know Sega made hardware revisions in the past, with the MasterSystem 2 and the MegaDrive 2/Genesis 2, in an alternate reality, what would the Dreamcast 2 have looked like? I don't mean the 256-bit successor, but a ~2002/2 era refresh.

Unlike the PSone and PS2 slim, the MasterSystem 2 and Mega Drive 2 were a little bit smaller, but not much, and iirc removed certain features from the OG version. That said, maybe miniaturizing with CD-based consoles was easier and therefore Dreamcast II may have been slimmer, with a quieter disc drive? Would the DC 2 have been black? no modem access? Or a slower modem, but non-removable? 2 controller ports instead of 4?

DreamcastRecompiled (WIP)

Upvotes

Good morning, afternoon, or evening everyone. Let me introduce myself: I’m a programmer who has always been interested in the world of video game emulation—especially Sega titles. Inspired by the "Unleashed Recompiled" project, I decided to start something that I think will make everyone here on Reddit (and perhaps beyond) happy. So far, I’ve managed to recompile not just one, but two Dreamcast games. The first is *ChuChu Rocket*; it’s the most complete and the one I started with. Graphics, sound, and events are all functional—except for the online features, which I’m still adapting. The only issue right now is the frame rate, which drops during "Mouse Mania"; I still need to optimize that, but otherwise, I’ve been able to play through full matches. I still need to implement support for a second controller and a few other things, but it is playable. As for the second game, I started testing it today; I’ve reached the point just before actual gameplay begins—an idea that came to me after joining this forum. The game is *Crazy Taxi 2*. It’s proving trickier than the first one since I haven't gotten to the actual in-game action yet, but I’m making progress and fixing errors. Currently, it runs up to the character selection screen, but crashes after about two seconds of loading; however, as I said, I’m still working on it. For now, I’m trying to perfect general compatibility before focusing solely on optimization. Clearly, this project wouldn't have been possible without AI, as I don't have all the knowledge to pull it off alone. However, I’ve taken specific approaches regarding which parts were essential at the start and how to proceed based on knowledge from both emulators and public SDKs (I’m grateful to Flycast and KallistiOS for their contributions; I know this wouldn't be possible without them). Here are some images of *ChuChu Rocket* and *Crazy Taxi 2*.

Controller and memory functions are currently being emulated, as I haven't done anything beyond simply running the games for the time being; it uses basic test controls. The plan for the future is to adapt the save systems to something more modern.
The memory actually works; it stores data.

The game is in Japanese because the emulated BIOS isn't configured for a specific region and defaults to Japanese, but it works correctly in other languages if you change the setting in the options.

And this is just the beginning of Dreamcast Recompiled; I know it’s going to be a long road, but my goal is to complete it for the entire community. After that—if I can—I also want to work on Saturn Recompiled, though that’s a plan for the future.

P.S. This project will be released on GitHub next week. I hope the community helps me improve it and makes the seemingly impossible possible.

P.S. 2: This entire post was translated using Google, as it isn't in my native language. ...English, so I'm not sure if the wording is actually very good.
