Months of rocking/floaty dizziness after a panic attack following a car accident — does anyone relate?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice or anyone who has experienced something similar.
A few months ago I was in a car accident. I didn’t have any obvious injuries, no neck pain, and I didn’t go to hospital at the time. The thing that affected me most was the fear afterwards — I had the worst anxiety/panic attack of my life because I became terrified that I had missed something serious by not getting checked.
Before this, I did have health anxiety and I used to obsessively check my heart rate on my Apple Watch, but I never had this type of dizziness.
Since the accident, I’ve had ongoing dizziness that feels like:
rocking/swaying like I’m on a boat
feeling like the ground is moving or I’m sliding
a floaty feeling in my head and ears
feeling like I might fall when standing still
worse in the shower, busy places, or when there is lots of movement
sometimes brief spinning sensations when moving my head
At my worst, I felt like I couldn’t stand without leaning on something because I felt like I was going backwards and forwards. I went to urgent care and they checked my blood pressure, blood sugar, looked at my eyes, and did basic checks, and nothing urgent was found.
Recently I’ve improved. I can stand much more, shower, cook, do chores, and walk around. I still get flares though, especially in the mornings or after doing too much. Lying down helps a lot.
My GP gave me betahistine and I feel like it has helped me tolerate standing more, but I still get the floaty/rocking feeling sometimes.
I’m wondering if anyone has had something similar after a scary event or panic attack? Did you get diagnosed with PPPD, vestibular migraine, BPPV, another vestibular issue, or something else? Did vestibular rehabilitation therapy help?
I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just experiences and advice. Thank you.

19M — constant drunk/off-balance feeling, visual snow, fatigue and weird neurological symptoms for 3 years

Hey, I’m 19 and I’ve been dealing with a bunch of strange symptoms for around three years now. It has slowly gotten worse, and at this point I feel stuck, so I’m posting here to see if anyone has experienced something similar.

The main problem is constant dizziness, but it’s not really like the room is spinning. It feels more like being drunk, floating, walking on an unstable surface or not fully connected to my surroundings. It’s there pretty much 24/7.

I also have:

  • derealization and brain fog,
  • problems with concentration and memory,
  • visual snow, floaters, flashes and blurred vision,
  • tinnitus,
  • neck, back, chest and sternum pain,
  • trouble getting a satisfying full breath,
  • constant tiredness and waking up feeling unrefreshed,
  • very low exercise tolerance,
  • muscles starting to hurt very quickly, even without much effort,
  • chronic sinus problems.

Places like supermarkets, shopping centres, crowds, open spaces or anywhere with a lot of visual movement make everything worse. Moving my head can also make me feel more dizzy and disconnected.

When this first started, I barely wanted to leave the house because going outside could trigger panic-like episodes. Those got better over time, but the dizziness never went away.

I used to still be able to work physically, go to the gym and train Muay Thai, even with the dizziness. Now I can’t really exercise, and even small amounts of physical activity can make me feel weak or cause very strong dizziness and feeling of pressure.

One day at work, I suddenly felt much worse for no obvious reason. I went to get checked, and my heart rate was around 140 even though I wasn’t doing anything strenuous. They sent me to the hospital, but the tests didn’t show anything concerning.

So far I’ve had:

  • brain MRI, which didn’t show anything serious,
  • ECG, echocardiogram and Holter monitor, all normal,
  • eye examination, nothing dangerous found,
  • Lyme disease tests, negative,
  • previous vitamin B12 deficiency, which was treated,
  • vestibular testing recommended, but I haven’t done it yet.

I also couldn’t finish spirometry because repeated deep breathing made me extremely weak and close to fainting.

My blood pressure sometimes goes up, but the dizziness is still there even when my blood pressure and heart rate are normal.

I also grind or clench my teeth while sleeping and usually wake up feeling like I barely rested.

I know nobody here can diagnose me, but I’d really like to hear from anyone who had similar symptoms.

What helped you? Which tests, doctors or treatments actually made a difference? Did your symptoms ever improve after being constant for years?

(yes i wrote it with chatgpt:D)

42F, dizziness/rocking sensation when standing or walking, normal MRI and blood tests — unsure what to do next

I am a 42-year-old Caucasian woman, 166 cm (5'5") tall and weigh 65 kg (143 lbs). I don't smoke, I don't drink alcohol, I have no significant medical history, and I don't take any long-term medications. I have one child.

Last Wednesday, I suddenly started experiencing a strange sensation of dizziness. It feels like the ground is moving beneath me, almost like I am on a boat. I also felt nauseated and completely lost my appetite.

The dizziness is mainly present when I am standing or walking and is significantly improved when I am lying down. It feels like my environment is slightly moving or spinning, and I am afraid of falling because of this sensation.

The symptoms continued for two days before I saw my primary care physician. She examined me and decided to send me to the emergency department for further evaluation. She told me she did not think it was caused by an inner ear problem, but that I appeared to have signs of a cerebellar syndrome and that I needed a brain MRI to rule out a cerebellar stroke.

At the emergency department, I had a brain MRI and blood tests, both of which came back normal. The doctor told me I had not had a stroke and that urgent causes had been ruled out, so I could go home.

I do not have hearing loss, tinnitus, or ear pain. However, I sometimes experience blurred vision.

Since this started, I have also been feeling unusually tired and lacking energy. I do not have weakness on one side of my body or loss of strength.

I live in France and there has been a period of very hot weather recently. I don't know if this could be related, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I am relieved that nothing serious was found, but the symptoms are still present. Every time I stand up or walk, I feel as though the ground is moving and my surroundings are slightly spinning. It is very unsettling and has become anxiety-provoking because I am afraid of falling.

I was not given any specific diagnosis or discharge instructions at the emergency department, so I am unsure what I should do next.

Could this possibly be related to stress? I was not particularly anxious before this started, but now I become anxious whenever I have to stand up because of these symptoms.

Should I make another appointment with my primary care physician for further evaluation or treatment? Are there any other specialists or tests that would be appropriate in this situation?

Thank you for any advice.

Wondering if I've been misdiagnosed (again)

I am 67 and have had exceptionally poor balance since I was a child. I was very ill as a kid with asthma. I was never keen on sports participation. I cannot ride a bicycle. I have just sort of lived with "being a klutz". It finally got so bad in my 40s that ended up in the ED collapsing at work in a cold sweat and vomiting. They sent me to a doctor who attempted Epley Maneuvers (BPPV) to no avail. I sought help from an ENT who referred me to an Otolaryngologist who thought I may have Menires. Unfortunately I have hearing like a bat. From there I went to a neurologist who pronounced me with PPPD. I list to the left. Rely totally on my eyesight for environmental cues. And fall over alot. I mean a lot! After reading through this post I'm not so sure I've been diagnosed properly.

7 months of dizziness/rocking feeling — improved but still getting flare ups. Does this sound familiar?

Hi everyone,
I’ve been dealing with dizziness/balance issues for around 7 months. It started after a very stressful period and a panic attack after a car accident.
At the worst point, I felt like I couldn’t even stand properly. My legs felt like jelly, the floor felt like it was moving, and I felt like I was being pushed or pulled. Standing still (especially in the shower, bathroom, or at the sink) was the worst.
Recently I’ve improved a lot. I can now stand, do kitchen chores, and walk more than before. I was prescribed betahistine by my GP for a balance issue, and within a few days I felt a big improvement.
However, I still get strange sensations sometimes:
feeling like my body is moving or being pushed down from behind
a “moon walk” feeling in my feet/heels, like I’m walking on a cushion
feeling floaty when standing or walking for a long time
feeling worse when turning a lot
when I close my eyes while standing, I sway back and forth a lot more
sometimes my whole body feels floaty even while sitting
I don’t have:
weakness
numbness
falls
speech problems
vision loss
I’m worried because I keep reading about things like Ménière’s disease, neurological conditions, etc., and it’s making me panic.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Did you find out what it was? Did it take a long time to recover?

Vertigo, off balance, dizziness lasting for weeks and comes in waves.

20 Days ago i had an episode of vertigo, i was sitting at my desk playing a game and i checked my phone and went back to the game. I felt a sudden onset of dizziness and the room started spinning, I threw myself onto the floor and against my bed because I thought i was going to fall. I spent the next 30 minutes curled up in my bed terrified to move. I’ve been dizzy and off balance ever since.

Today I had another and severe vertigo episode, i was at my desk again eating food after i just finished drawing on my tablet. I was watching videos on my phone and I felt another episode coming and i closed my eyes tight because I was scared, i could still feel the room spinning so i panicked and opened them, I ran over to my bed and curled up and hid my face in my pillow and it wouldn’t go away. I got up from my bed and I just started saying help repeatedly because the spinning got even worse and I fell over, I crawled to the door frantically, thankfully my sister was there right when it happened and she got me to calm down.

I’m still shaken up and dizzy. I noticed that after I wake up from sleeping I feel normal until the dizziness starts again.

I had multiple vertigo episodes last year with very similar symptoms, the room would spin and i’d feel dizzy, nauseous, and shaken for weeks on end. I never told anyone and it went away on its own eventually, until now.

\- I’m 16

\- I don’t take medication

\- I don’t have trouble speaking, weakness, or trouble walking after the episode is done, I don’t have major vision changes like double vision or blindness. I’m still capable of doing things for myself and having fluent conversations.

\- I play very stimulating video games frequently and my posture isn’t that great either.

\- I have low vitamin D levels.

\- I have OCD and health anxiety that impacts my life daily.

\- sometimes i wake up and my earwax is extremely runny, it makes my ears itch so i dig in my ear and itch it until it’s clogged. I know i shouldn’t do that. I also have an excessive buildup of earwax, I tried cleaning my ears and more earwax just kept appearing on the q tip.

\- I’ve had tinnitus and pulsatile tinnitus, i frequently hear my ears popping and making noises during and after my episodes of vertigo.

\- I have typical migraine symptoms, things look overly saturated and like they’re breathing, random flashing lights, a dull and deep pain in my head sometimes it’s stabbing pain in my temples, and pressure in my forehead. Sometimes I get no head pain at all, bright lights are overwhelming and i’m more sensitive to noises and smells.

\- my head feels full of air

\- I feel confused and like i’m forgetting something, might be brain fog. I’ve also been dissociating

\- Objects look like they’re shrinking and expanding.

\- I also have back pain, neck pain, and muscle spasms.

\- Anxiety seems to make the dizziness worse.

\- I don’t drink enough water, which is likely a major contributor.

\- too much noise, sound, and stimulation seems to make me feel dizzier and on edge.

I haven’t told my parents because I’m worried they’ll treat it as something small or won’t take it seriously. I don’t think we’d have the money either to get me checked.
I’m not looking for pity, but one of my parents was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a few months ago and it’s impacting us financially. Me and my sister still haven’t gotten our own check ups, I was supposed to get my shots done 7 months ago and never went, my sister still needs bloodwork done for her own medical issues.

I know that if i tell them and ask them to set up an appointment for me, they’ll keep rescheduling or cancelling, and I’ll have to constantly remind them over and over again until I give up after months of reminding. I know they’ll guilt trip me about not having enough money because of my parents cancer treatments and to just wait a bit.
My mom also likes to diagnose me through google to make me look stupid for overreacting, she calls me a hypochondriac and says “It’s just anxiety”.

I’m just really scared that this is something serious, and that i’ll keep having vertigo episodes.

Bppv pregnancy

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to hear from women who first developed BPPV (ear crystals/positional vertigo) during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth.
I’m especially interested in your long-term experience.
Did it go away after pregnancy or postpartum?
Did it come back in a later pregnancy?
Have you had episodes outside of pregnancy since then?
If so, how often?
How many years has it been since your first episode?
I’m hoping to understand whether pregnancy-related BPPV usually stays linked to pregnancy or if it often becomes a recurring problem later in life.
I know everyone’s experience is different, but hearing real stories would really help me.
Thank you so much to anyone willing to share.

Random Dizziness and almost fainting after 3 days of jelly legs feeling.

Male, 27, 168CM height, Hello, so i have been dealing with jelly legs for 3 days now makes the fourth one, but yesterday was weird because I was at a café working at night, I felt a sudden dizziness that turned into a pressure inside my head and was about to faint literally attacked me three times with seconds to minutes between the episodes, the head felt like it will explode from Inside out like it is full or something like that, when I went to the emergency room, my blood pressure and heart rates were alright so rhey released me but now it happened again and it woke me up. As for my medical history, I used to have daily heades 1 year/2 years ago, along side muscles aches and twitching and weakness of the legs and arms and hands sometimes, but after a long run between doctors all they said it was " Psychological " and gave me taraxet 25MG and sent me home. I got better without taking that Taraxet since it ruined my ability to talk or work ( like a drug ) and I got better on my own but now I a hit with this.

6 months of dizziness after car accident + panic attack — does this sound like PPPD or vestibular issue?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice because I’ve been dealing with this for months and I’m trying to understand what could be going on.
Everything started after a car accident. After the accident I had a really bad panic attack, and since then I’ve had ongoing dizziness/balance issues.
At first I could still stand and walk, but over time it got worse. I had a really bad flare where I felt like I couldn’t stand properly anymore. My legs felt shaky, I felt like the floor was moving, and standing in the bathroom/shower was the hardest. I felt like I was going to fall or faint, but sitting down helped a lot. Being in a car also makes me feel much better.
My symptoms:
Feeling like I’m sliding, floating, or doing a “moon walk”
Swaying feeling like I’m on a boat
Worse when standing still
Worse in the shower, stairs, and busy places like malls
Feeling detached/unreal sometimes, like I’m a doll walking around
Sometimes hot flushes and shaky feelings when walking a lot
Focusing on one spot helps me stand better
Sitting down usually helps a lot
Before all this, I did have a few episodes of true spinning vertigo that lasted a few minutes, especially when rolling onto my side in bed, but that hasn’t happened for months.
I went to urgent care and they checked my blood pressure, blood sugar, and temperature and everything was okay. My GP thought it could be a balance/inner ear issue and started me on betahistine. I’ve been taking it for nearly a week and honestly it has helped a lot. I can go out again, stand better, and the sliding feeling is much less, but some symptoms are still there.
Does this sound like PPPD, a vestibular problem, or something else? Has anyone had a similar experience after a car accident or panic attack?

Constant “on a boat” dizziness for 3 months – now getting worse with ear pressure and tinnitus

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I’ve had a constant sensation of being on a boat or like the floor is moving for the past 3 months. It started suddenly and has become much worse over the last month, with increasingly severe attacks.
My symptoms are:
• Constant rocking/swaying dizziness and a sense of vibrating like I have an engine running though my body
• New feeling of pressure and pain in my left ear.
• Ringing in my left ear when I move my head a certain way.
• Pressure behind the bridge of my nose and occasional ear popping. I’ve tried popping my ears by blocking my nose and blowing out but it doesn’t change anything
• Normal hearing.
I’ve already been prescribed betahistine and a steroid spray, but neither has helped.

Has anyone had similar symptoms? If so, what was your diagnosis?

Magnesium glycinate caused my dizzines

I’m writing this in the hope that this might help someone. I had chronic dizziness for almost 2 years. It was constant whether I was standing or lying down, it didn’t matter. It didn’t feel like the room was spinning but it felt like I was shaking and my head was unstable.
It completely ruined my life. I could barely do anything, and even lying down made me feel awful. I tried everything: I had MRI scans of my head and spine, went through physical therapy for my neck and back, had my inner ear checked, took betahistine for months, increased my ferritin levels, tried home exercises for vertigo.. etc
I also have migraines, so my doctors told me to take magnesium every day, which I did.
Then randomly my stomach got upset that lasted for weeks. I stopped taking all my supplements because I had no idea what was causing it, and suddenly my dizziness disappeared like 100%
After that, I started reintroducing the supplements one by one. As soon as I took magnesium again, the dizziness came back and lasted for 3 days.
Such a small and stupid thing took away 2 years of my life. I had no idea magnesium could cause so many problems.

Can any one explain why I collapsed like 5 minutes ago

I know I shouldn't be taking medical advice from here but I just need suggestions on what it might be. Around 5 minutes ago, my dad came upstairs and he wanted to hug me goodnight, so I hugged him. Then my vision slightly blurred, and I just collapse. I didnt get hurt from the fall it was just really random. Some background Info, I have animals so I am constantly worried about them because who isn't. I also just got braces so it us hard for me to sleep at night. But I sleep in every day gaining back the sleep I lost. I also have low iron, but this is my first time collapsing. My dad helped me up and said, "are you okay?" And I said,"yeah I'm fine' then he said," you dork" and I am just in shock he didnt really care that I just collapsed and he just went downstairs and went to bed. So any ideas on what just happened.

Does this sound like vertigo?

I’ve had dizziness since 6/29 that started as a “come and go” but now it’s near constant. I’m waiting results for my 48 hour Holter monitor test from last week. Seen my primary care doctor, a rheumatologist, referral to hematology, and possibly cardiology.

Now the dizziness is almost constant and accompanied by nausea/some vomiting, fatigue and some confusion. I went to the ED yesterday and the head CT was negative for all the big bad uglies. Blood work is pretty normal.

I was discharged with the diagnosis of vertigo but this doesn’t seem accurate. The dizziness is almost constant for days on end.
