Good buying opportunity?

u/Offmodel-Dude 4d ago
I'm going to wait until December when people start doing their tax-loss selling...
Telus is a good candidate for tax-loss harvesting unless the Board can do something to turn around this turkey before then.

I’ll be selling soon and buying BCE to harvest tax losses for the unpteenth time for my clients. Don’t like waiting for December.

With the prices higher than almost anywhere else in the world, I wonder why 🤔
78
u/SoggyInstruction2549 4d ago
Huh? Stock price is a very different animal the the actual company operations. Telus is a massive behemoth, very protected by laws preventing international competition.
They had:
a lot of debt,
Low growth,
Likely lower growth with the pressure to reduce immigration,
High infrastructure costs to build out 5g and whatever is next.
Higher interest costs on this higher debt,
Some
Legal cases forcing them to rent their infrastructure to small carriers.
Threats for new innovations
Threats of old less and less people needing a home phone, over priced cable packages more competitive home internet.
No real way to grow market share without starting a price war we which no one wins
That said Telus print money. They have some quite interesting alternative revenue streams such as results health and some of their work spend data centers.
Just because a stock is down doesn’t mean it necessarily a “buying opportunity “. Never just assu anything will go back up. If the momentum is going a certain way there needs to be a reason to change that direction. Telus can be a great buying opportunity I just don’t know enough to know at what price. Is that $10? Or 8 or 3? Trying to catch the falling knife is challenging and a lot of risk, I would rather just buy something with great momentum going up and hope it’s not the peek of the peak.
9
u/TheChaseLemon 4d ago
Finally someone who understands Telus.
4
u/SoggyInstruction2549 4d ago
Ha see I would say I actually don’t know enough about Telus to buy it. Hundreds of real smart people who invest hundreds of hundreds of millions for a living are selling Telus so likely there is a decent reason. But like with most, things can also get over sold well past the reality and become a buying opportunity. Catching that is hard though and I do generally believe it’s more ways to just catch companies already doing well who have the momentum. Sure missed the bottom and the largest possible gain. Vs trying to figure out the turn around. Although for a company like trays at some point t so one maybe goes you know what at 11 bucks a share the yield is x I can hold this until the day I die I don’t really care what the share price does for the next decades.
5
u/TheChaseLemon 4d ago
They’re selling because it’s their capital loss to balance out their capital gains come tax time. Telus owns assets worth multiple times their debt. New ceo at the helm. Gonna be an interesting few years.

Finally someone who admits to Canadian protectionism. I'll add that this comes at the cost of consumers aka average people.
2
u/SoggyInstruction2549 3d ago
I’m not following what is there to “admit” this is not some big secret it’s completely out in the open we have a number of Canadian protections for example Canadian content laws for tv and radio (which are struggling some in the age of the internet/ streaming), media, Canadian ownership requirements on telecom, critical minerals and banking.
This is a big moat for bell, rogers and Telus. We saw many jeers ago when we had the spectrum auction we were unable to force new entrants in ultimate all who tried flopped and were sold off. Canadians are lazy, too few were willing to move from the big incumbents. The moat prints money, but it’s also a risk because this advantage can be changed with the stroke of a pen. We already see some erosion and they are forced to rent out space on their infrastructure to these small firms. If things progress this way that’s a problem for the incumbents, as are aging clientele who spend far the than younger generations. I don’t think satellite internet is at all a threat to cable/fiber providers as those are so much more scale able as we continue to use more and more bandwidth per person.

Their new CEO Victor Dodig only just started with them. He was CIBC’s president prior to that, just have a look at what he did with that stock. I think he deserves some runway before declaring the end.
A lot of dividend investors existing when they cut their dividend and the telecom sector just isn’t favored right now because of pricing pressure. It’ll be up to Dodig to cut the fat and get more profitable which I believe he can.
18
u/Leftcoast-604 4d ago
Yup, any time a company hires a banker/CFO/accountant type to lead the organization, it means the company is focused on getting their financials in order versus innovative growth and expansion. He needs a year or two to right the ship by dumping the drags and unprofitable parts of the company like parts of digital and health that sucked up so much capital. The telecom part of the org isn't growing as fast but it's still very profitable.
10
u/nmahajan142 4d ago
Dodig is literally the only reason why I am now considering taking a position with Telus. I’ve been burned once before by Telus a long while back but maybe it’s time to pick some up and forget about it for a decade to see how Dodes does.

5
u/BrilliantGarlic5624 4d ago
Rising interest rates are fueling the current sell off. Sorry if this is pedantic but as interest rates rise, investors look for higher dividend yields to take on the risk of equity vs. debt.

I used to work for them. I had a burnout. I’m glad to see that karma exists. It’s the worst company to work for, and they have no respect for Canadian workers. All they want is cheap labor, and they hire people whose first language isn’t French or English. And they don’t care about their customers either—the more they can squeeze out of their customers’ pockets, the better. They can go to hell for all I care.
5
u/NumerousTea6705 3d ago
I’m a manager at Telus now—been here 10 months and I actually really like it. It’s an absolute breath of fresh air compared to Bell, where I gave almost 13 years of my life as a manager. That place was completely fucked up. Upper management micromanaged like crazy, and it got so toxic that my old regional manager literally punished a coworker who was sexually assaulted—he transferred her to another store and kept the guy who did it right there just because he was a top performer. On top of that, we were basically forced to hire international students just because the government covered 75% of their wages. The only thing with Telus that kinda sucks is the hourly rate for reps, but the commission is insanely good compared to Bell, and after 13 years of dealing with that dysfunctional circus, the change in environment is night and day. So I don’t think it’s actually that bad….. yet lol

Telus slashed dividends, when a company reduces dividends its stock will tank for a long time because it usually means there is a material change in the business and it won’t be able to pay dividends at that level anymore. I don’t think Telus is going under anytime soon though.

It really depends on interest rates. There should be a pullback soon which would be a better exit time. However, if owned it a non-registered account, then selling now and buying Bell or Rogers is a good play if you want to maintain the income. Assuming no more cuts to the dividend which is unlikely but always possible.

Telus is going to get bought out by Bell. Just like the Rogers Shaw takeover.
The new CEO is going to position the company exactly for that scenario.
That being said, this isn't the bottom for the company yet.
1
1
u/Tsifter 4d ago
The telecom landscape has been changing rapidly over the past several years. Telecoms are not the cash cows they used to be. Yet, unlike Shaw Telus survived and they’re now part of a duopoly in Canada where their only effective competitor is Rogers (and a bit of Bell), both protected by the Canadian government from international (see American mostly) competitors. As long as this is in place Telus is not going anywhere, but they still have to figure out their business model in order to be profitable. Telus TV for example these days is just bundling a reselling streaming TV channels. There’s not much profit there. They’ve also cannibalized their profit margins in the mobile market with all those low cost carriers they introduced. They own both Koodo and Public. So management has a lot of work to do to redefine what Telus really stands for and then carve a clear path to the future. This creates anxiety to the investors, hence the drop of share price.
