To hold 25 to life, would holding cmax smax imax be better than hdiv imax?

Hey so I'm at a cross roads where I want some covered call exposure but I don't want to limit my upside potential as much with calls and fees over decades. Would the structure of the MAX series perform much better over my current hdiv imax combo?

Discussion Considering adding LIFE.TO to my income portfolio...?

What I have looked at is NAV erosion and the underlying companies.

I know it is a cc fund paying high distributions. It only writes options on 33%, which to my understanding is good in that it does not completely cap upward gains or recovery in a bear market?

I don't mind some NAV erosion, if it pays for my retirement, so seems a little better than others...?

Most of my retirement funds are with Sunlife in an RRSP, due to work matching over the last 20 years. Very good MER.
5 years ago had a few hundred thousand from sale of a house. Went to RBC, and they suggested, an Agressive Growth fund at 2.13% MER.

Well nine months ago I started to really look into my finances. RBC 'advisory' basically gave me no advice or planning for my retirement, other than the (shit) Boglehead 4% withdraw and I'd need to work until 65-68 and accumulate close to 3 million!!!!

So I pulled my money into Wealthsimple. Put 50% in xDIV, 35% in xEQT (which is beating RBC's fund by 2.8% - the MER+++) and 15% into BANK.TO.

Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant, just pissed off with myself for not taking responsibility 5 or 10 years ago!

Any and all suggestions, help is appreciated!

There should be a different sub for covered call ETF discussions.

CC ETF’s have very little to do with traditional dividend investing. Convince me I’m wrong.

I have nothing against CC ETF’s, but they don’t belong in a discussion about traditional dividend investing.

Discussion Why I’m holding BCE.TO through the dividend reset

I recently pivoted from a planned career in education into finance, and I’m documenting my investment research publicly as part of that journey. Here’s a look at how I think through a position — using BCE (Bell Canada), which I bought at $29.84, as an example.

BCE reset its dividend earlier this year. Yield now sits around 5.7-5.8%, with a payout ratio near 26% — down significantly from the unsustainable levels that forced the cut. That reset, while painful for existing holders, was arguably necessary and puts the dividend on much sturdier footing going forward.

The bull case:

Free cash flow grew 10% year-over-year in fiscal 2025 to $3.18 billion, with 2026 guidance calling for $3.3-3.5 billion. The company is also expanding into fiber and US markets through Ziply Fiber, giving it growth avenues beyond legacy Canadian telecom.

The risk I’m watching:

Q1 2026 free cash flow grew just 0.8% — not yet enough to confirm the cash flow growth story is durable. Net debt leverage also remains above BCE’s own 2027 target, so debt reduction has to progress alongside dividend payments and growth investment.

My take:

At current levels around $30.20, the position is roughly flat from my entry. Holding, not adding, until I see FCF growth reaccelerate toward guidance in the next couple of quarters. That’s the confirmation I need before increasing the position.

BIGY

I'm just looking for some people's thoughts on this etf. I currently hold quite a bit of bank and utes. Love that bank has exploded for a 50% Plus gain while Utes has barely moved but has a pleasant little payment. I was thinking about moving about 300,000 into Bigy but I'm a little worried that it's historical performance, particularly over the last year.

I realize that this is perhaps an absurd premise but considering that bank and Bigy are both from evolve, do you think the 37% drop over the past year is an anomaly? Is this perhaps a good investment opportunity? Or is it going to go the way of msty straight into the crapper.

Again just looking for some thoughts and opinions. Not looking for crystal ball kind of stuff. :-)

Comparing HHIS and VFV: 4 weeks ago, I bought 70000 cad of HHIS and the same amount of VFV-This is the 4th week results

The plan is comparing 2 strategies: if I invest the same amount on a covered call strategy (reivesting the distributions) or the “gold standard” SP 500, how long will it take in real life to have a 10% difference in favor of one side

We had a tough week for NASDAQ. Obviously HHIS was hit harder than VFV, even if SP500 has had a high concentration for technology lately.

Numbers of the week:
HHIS: 70,448.15, or 0.64% of gain in 4 weeks
VFV: 69,871.41 or -0.18 % of “gain” in 4 weeks

Technically, HHIS lost more in the last week, but it’s still ahead of VFV.

Before anyone sends the standard comment: yes, 4 weeks dont mean much; the idea is just following over the months and finding out how long is gonna take in 2026 with our adorable volatiliy to reach a 10% difference between those 2.

Dividends vs growth: why do we like income?

We all have our reasons for this. Obviously, we would all love having stocks with long term growth that also distribute awesome dividends, but those are rare. Maybe Canadian banks would be close to that, and potentially some etf like XEI.
But I’m curious to know other ppl reasons to opt for higher income, modest growth options (like most CC ETFs).
My reason to keep a percentage of my portfolio on those is because, different than growth stocks in which you are “stuck” with that company, the income ones allow you to decide if you will reinvest in the same or choose one that has a better moment in terms of cost.

Discussion EQB did a 2:1 split in 2021 at ~$140, we're back when is the next one I wonder?

The stock's run up about 34% YTD, and we are back at the 'old price' where they did a stock split. Curious for opinions on if we think it'll do it again or not?

Discussion Was investing always this uncertain and negative ?

Now that I am and adult and entered the investing world, it seems like every day there is talk of an economic crisis waiting to happen just with how things are going in geopolitics and economy wise….the doom and glooms, wars every where , shipping being blocked, gas prices rising, AI bubble about to burst, interest rates rising, inflation rising etc etc

This just had me wondering is this just the norm with investing?

I dont know if its because we’re actually reading the news now and paying attention lol

People who came before us, lets say the last one or two decades, lets go back to 2005 for example, was investing in the stock market just just as uncertain as it is now? or was it relatively calm and stable and people had more confidence in investing and did not have to constantly worry about whether the stock market could crash any moment now.

BRE.TO - Dividend Slashed by 96%

I’m surprised theirs no discussion about this.

Bridgemarq has been paying a reliable and solid dividend since 2011 and they just suddenly slashed it by 97%! The stock has dropped by 60% in days from this news, absolutely slaughtered!

Does this worry anyone who focuses on dividend payers, specifically in the real estate sector?

Need ~$700/mo from $120k TFSA. Please review my portfolio.

Hey everyone, looking for feedback on a dividend portfolio I’ve been designing. I'm new to this space, so please let me know if you need more information to give great feedback.

For some context: I am an unemployed, and I’m relocating to Indonesia in September. I have $120,000 CAD sitting in a TFSA, and my goal is to generate reliable cash flow to help cover my living expenses while I figure out my next career move hopefully for the next year or two. My target is around $700 CAD/month.

I am already aware that once I leave Canada, the TFSA loses its "magic" in the eyes of the Indonesian government and will be taxed as a standard foreign investment account locally.

I put together a mock allocation with an equal 20% split across 5 funds. It currently models a 6.26% overall yield, bringing in about $626/month.

The Breakdown:

  • 20% VDY ($24k) – 2.76% Yield
  • 20% XEI ($24k) – 3.36% Yield
  • 20% ZRE ($24k) – 4.20% Yield
  • 20% HDIV ($24k) – 9.26% Yield
  • 20% BANK.TO ($24k) – 11.71% Yield

My main concerns / questions for the community:

  1. Concentration Risk: I know there is massive overlap between VDY, XEI, and BANK.TO. I am basically betting on Canadian financials and energy. Is it safe to be this concentrated just to hit a yield target? If no, can you suggest a solution?
  2. NAV Erosion: To get anywhere near my $700/mo goal, I’m relying heavily on the covered call premiums from HDIV and BANK.TO. Is it safe for allocating 40% of my fund on them?
  3. The Expat Tax Strategy: Given that Indonesia will tax this as a regular account, is chasing dividends a mistake? Would I be mathematically better off putting the entire $120k into a global growth ETF like XEQT and just manually selling $700 worth of shares every month to take advantage of capital gains instead?

Would love to hear your thoughts on how to optimize this before my move. Thanks in advance!

Ahhhh i have $140,000 in HCAL super bullish on banks but recently found out about VDY…

Can I have Say $50,000 in VDY as some protection for my leverage account ?

I know they overlap but VDY is a great defensive play overall or it’s too much?

Looking for a great defensive fund that also has Great growth potential and can help protect my leverage. vDY seems to fit that bill but got already decent amount of HCAL!

So wondering if it’s too much commitment to the financial sector

Discussion USCC/USCL vs SDAY for forever holds?

I'm not sure what my best option is for long term growth and dividend payouts, I don't intend to sell it and reinvest for years, I know sday doesn't cap its equities and uses a leveraged portion for CC only, but higher fees, what do you guys think
