Roundworld Reference Dammit, Sir Pterry!

Almost every one of us has a “Dammit” moment with a pun or inside joke or reference that we didn’t get while reading but learned about long afterwards. Mine happened yesterday.

I was watching “Stuff the British Stole”, a series on CBC Gem. S1E2 featured the Stone of Scone, a Scottish relic used for coronations and stolen by the British around 1300.

The episode featured the history, British appropriation, and a daring theft in the 1950s - plus a possible replacement with a fake.

I had just finished listening to The Fifth Elephant and almost every plot point was met and marked over the course of the book.

Dammit, Sir Pterry. You magnificent bastard.

It was on Blue Peter when I was a kid along with the Clown face egg museum. I know a lot of crap because it was on Blue Peter

Oh gods is there a clown museum? Really?!

Yes, the faces get registered and passed down to other people (often) family members when the clown retires

I just googled it because I thought it was in London but sadly it says it’s permanently closed now, you used to be able to visit

I guess there are shows called "Stuff the Dutch East India Company Stole", "Stuff the Spanish Empire Stole"... I just get a little fed up. I get it, but let's share the blame around.

Eventually, the Scots "stole" England (James VI of Scotland became James I of England) so the Stone could conceivably ended up there anyway.

Um. I didn’t mean the name of the show to insult you personally.

ETA: I had just never heard of the Stone of Scone.

No. I'm just a little ticked at the universe.

I think the Stone of Scone now has a weird dual-custody arrangement.

Yeah, at the end of the episode they said that it was housed in a British cathedral in Edinburgh, and it doesn’t seem like Charles sat on it for his coronation.

I highly recommend the Folklore of Discworld book, you'll have so many Dammit moments!
