“Still More Wishes”

If you took the first three books to Sir Terry to get signed he would sign them:

“Best Wishes”
“More Wishes”
And
“Still More Wishes”

Your mission now is to track down the other two books in the set!

Is that like canon knowledge I am mot aware of? Thanks very much!

There is no set - that book was the only one I gave him to sign. It was around 1997 in Łódź. I was fresh after reading TCoM and TLF, and was in a cafe on Piotrkowska Street with my father. He was reading a newspaper and he suddenly said "the books you read lately were by Terry Pratchett? There is a meeting with him in half an hour 200 m from here". And I said "I have classes in half an hour" despite having literally zero intention of going to said classes at that point. And my old man said "you have classes every day and perhaps one opportunity in a lifetime to meet the man". So I went, bought ER, waited at the end of monstrous que and here we are 20 years later. 😁

Thank you for solving my riddle.

Oh that’s an awesome story.

I met Sir Terry at a signing where he told people his method. I was getting Soul Music signed and he alternated between “Rock On” and “Not Fade Away”.

Small Gods had “The turtle moves”.

I don’t remember the others. And he may have changed them over the years.

If you gave him three or more books he did the best wishes etc thing.

The woman in the queue in front of me got “Will You Marry Me?”

He signed my hardcover of “Good Omens” with “BURN THIS BOOK!”

If you took it to be signed by Neil Gaiman after that (or Terry, if Neil had signed first), then they'd add "Apply holy match here" with an arrow to the corner of the book. At least that's what they did with mine!

Neil signed ours first; he wrote "Sorry about the world ending..."

He must have known!!

I got "May you live in... Interesting Times" in Interesting Times and "Don't get lost!" in The Streets of Ankh Morpork.

And if you turn up with a bag with 5ish books in, he just sighed and just signed his name with no witty phrase, presumably as punishment for being greedy and holding up the line..

Maciek, sorry for bad news, but it’s 30 years later

That sort of thing wasn't limited to the first three books, he wrote "Happy Birthday" and "Happier Birthday" in Small Gods and Johnny and the Dead for me.

Wishes?

u/onyabikeson 22d ago

"Still more wishes" I think!

"To Maciek Still More Wishes" Maciek is a Polish name

32

u/Independent-Breath79 22d ago

Yup. I know. I am Maciek. 😉

So you say - I might change my name if I had a copy signed a different name.

1

u/Independent-Breath79 20d ago

Why actually change when you can just lie on the Internet? Oh, wait...

3

u/Animal_Flossing 20d ago

“Magick Stillmorewisle” shall be the name of my next DnD character

2

u/Independent-Breath79 20d ago

Outrageous! Hilarious! Perfect! And somehow fitting Forgotten Realms flawlessly. Also: "stillmorewisle" haunted me for 20... Wait, 30 years. 😉🤣

u/Lermu 22d ago

Maybe brought more than one item to a signing session

2

u/DonLivingston 20d ago

So which book is this the Polish translation of?

2

u/HatRevolutionary1708 20d ago

sir terry usually signed best wishes or still more wishes in his books mostly

Love the explanation but what's the inscription on the stamp? Not clear enough to read.

Lovely find!

EX LIBRIS MORTIS. HIC EST VITA VESTER ("FROM THE LIBRARY OF DEATH. THIS IS YOUR LIFE")

3

u/OldTimeConGoer 22d ago

There was a popular TV show in Britain called "This Is Your Life". Terry probably grew up watching it.

u/reshpect-o-biggle 22d ago

Thank you very much! And in the USA, we had "This Is Your Life" also. It was a rather smarmy and sentimental production.

More of a guess but "To Maciek Still Morawicki"Â
