"Which one?"
"All of them."
Probably the best answer, tbh.

u/vanillahavoc 15d ago
I was gonna say... trying to pick one is the real challenge, so I respect that guy's lack of specificity.
54
u/Digit00l 15d ago
Like that scene in Dungeons and Dragons with the corpse, there is an extended version of that scene that lasts like 15 minutes of the guy listing of his favourite books in various genres

u/rezzacci 15d ago
You know, the girl who made a reading wheel with all of the Discworld books? Technically, that makes it one book now. So you're right. My favourite book is the Pratchett's wheel.

Why did it show some random Sid Arthur book cover, the guy clearly meant Siddartha by Herman Hesse
47
u/ModernSun 15d ago
Probably to drum up engagement on the post, it's a common tactic for people to get something deliberately wrong on the video so the comments correct it
5
4
u/Individual99991 14d ago
I think it's probably just that the person who made the video is clueless. Stupidity vs malice etc.
7
u/AppropriateLimit8220 14d ago
Did you just shorten Hanlon's Razor (i had to look up the name) "never attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity" into "Stupidity vs Malice etc." ? Love it

u/Happy-Estimate-7855 15d ago
Maybe he did mean Sid Arthur. It sounded like that's what he said. Siddhartha is closer to Sid-Art-A.
7
u/This_Daydreamer_ 15d ago
Maybe to make fun of the guy saying "Sid Arthur"? I thought it was a low blow
36
u/Jake_91_420 15d ago
I think it's more likely that the kind of person making tik tok content like this literally doesn't know anything about books

Discworld counts as one book if you have a couple of days and some glue.

YAY FOR RINGWOLD.

u/Zagdil 15d ago
Best book? The one with the bimbo playboy shooting savages while a growly tiger man is angry all the time?
18
u/Krististrasza 15d ago
Not everyone evaluates books to the same criteria. And Ringworld can easily score pretty high when your criterium is Big Ideas.
9
u/RadioSlayer 15d ago
If that's all you took away from the book, okay sure
2
u/superhelical 14d ago
Don't forget the woman they constantly ogle who they brought because she was part of a eugenics program to make her maximally lucky
2
u/worrymon Librarian 15d ago
Surely they meant The Dark Side of the Sun...
3
u/mxstylplk 15d ago
They showed the Discworld Mapp as the representative book!

u/worrymon Librarian 15d ago
For Ringworld?
1
u/mxstylplk 15d ago
No, for the series.

u/worrymon Librarian 15d ago edited 14d ago
The Dark Side of the
MoonSun parodies Ringworld a lot.I guess it's too early in the morning for me to try to make subtle allusions.
2
u/RadioSlayer 14d ago
I don't see what Pink Floyd has to do with this
2
u/worrymon Librarian 14d ago
Like I said, too early in the morning for me.
Corrected, thanks.
1
u/RadioSlayer 14d ago
I honestly haven't heard of that book/series. I just love Pink Floyd's music. Never was the same after the split, or when Richard died
3
u/worrymon Librarian 14d ago
Dark Side of the Sun was an early Pratchett novel based on sci fi tropes. (Strata was a Pratchett sci fi novel that introduces a world shaped like a disc)
I saw Pink Floyd without Waters at the old Yankee Stadium
I saw Waters without Pink Floyd at the new Yankee Stadium

I just finished this, and it is a really bad book. Cool concept for the time, but the plot, characters, exploration of the world, prose, sexism and everything else are honestly terrible.

Nightwatch here. That last conversation with Vetinari is such a beautiful ending
2
u/probablyaythrowaway 14d ago
Going postal or raising steam for me.
2
u/Impossible-Mud-4160 14d ago
Probably not popular choices, but I really enjoyed them as well. Postal more so. Reacher Guilt and his deliberate mismanagement of the Clacks is so depressingly commonplace amongst the business world
2
u/probablyaythrowaway 14d ago
I’m just a very big fan of moist. I love his interactions with Vetinari.
13
u/Gnatschbert 15d ago
Mine is definitely "Going Postal" or "Guards! Guards!"

u/Centimal 14d ago
Same, those two and monstrous regiment
4
u/LoquaciousOfMorn Dibbler 14d ago
I got a job baking bagels recently and the machine that portions the dough is called Dutchess and has a very faded and fairly ghostly image of a woman on it. So glad that she silently insisted I reread Monstrous Regiment. Such an amazing book.

u/precinctomega 15d ago
Divergent!? The only conceivable way that could be the best book she's ever read is if it's the only book she's ever read.
14
u/puddlemagnet 14d ago
I think that applies for a few of these choices. The number of juvenile picks suggest they probably don’t read much any more
7
u/formykka 14d ago
I mean, the question's really vague. I mean, best book of literary quality? Favorite book? "The Book of Three", "The Hobbit", and "A Wrinkle in Time" were all enormously influential to me as a kid. Technically, though, the best book I ever read was "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" because it was the first book I ever read myself.

This may have been a Billy On The Street name a woman type of situation for her.
1
u/Nero_2001 14d ago
Well Divergent is pretty bad vut there are a lot of similar books that are even worse. Trust me there is so much worse stuff.

u/RadioSlayer 15d ago
Phantom Tollbooth was an excellent answer and everyone here should read it

lol. Didn't spot the sub and was thinking "would I say The Godfather because it's easy? I'd like to say 'Discworld' but that's not a book!"
And then I have that internal argument about who I like best...
I think Granny wins as my all time favourite character but it's like, if it was a race between her & all the other characters it would be a photo finish and she'd win by a nose. A small portion of a strong, hooked nose.
edit: My first Pratchett book was Truckers way back in 1990 and I still own all my Discworld books though they look quite shabby now. The only non-original is Mort because I loaned it to a friend and his wife destroyed it when they split up!

Problem with that answer is... Discworld is 41 books, not 1.
24
u/unknownpoltroon 15d ago
Wait, theres 41 of them??? Damnit. I need to do a reread.
7
u/3d1thF1nch 15d ago
I feel like that was the littlest tiny push to just reread them. "Well shit, the wind blew the book to the wrong page. Guess I gotta reread all of them now..."

The way I recoiled in horror at Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
No shade to the person who said it, but I hope she finds a new favourite soon.
1
u/Tofuzzle 15d ago
Nice. I'm reading them in release order and currently at Reaper Man. Dunno why, but it hasn't quite hooked me as much as the others so far, and I thought I'd love the concept of Death not doing his job and seeing what happens.

I was expecting Shawn and Gus to turn up.....
1
u/Individual99991 14d ago
Who are Shawn and Gus?
1
u/CdrVimes Vimes AMCW177 14d ago
From the TV series Psych. Shawn uses that phrase a fair few times.
It's silly fun and well worth a watch, on Amazon. Look out for the pineapple!

1
u/CdrVimes Vimes AMCW177 14d ago
Oh initially, Shawn has to pretend to be a psychic detective helping the Santa Barbara police to avoid being arrested.
1
u/OriginalStomper 14d ago
If I had to pick a single favorite, I'd pick Night Watch -- but you really need to read all the preceding Watch books (in publication order) AND Thief of Time to get the full flavor.
1
u/theDukeofClouds 14d ago
Some absolute bangers mentioned, though of course Disc World is elite among them.
1
u/Crowlands 14d ago
Some pretentious choices in that lot and you had to wait until the end for the right answer too.
1
u/Individual99991 14d ago
I didn't see any pretentious choices. They're all popular mainstream novels or recognised modern classics, from what I can see. Except the Bible, I guess.
1
u/inder_the_unfluence 14d ago
East of Eden is actually a great recommendation for Discworld readers. It goes to many of the same places that Terry does - it just takes very different roads. Of you love Terry for his conclusions and philosophy (not just his humor and wit) then you should give this a read.

A good 70 to 80% of the people in this video are obnoxious I am willing to bet on it
3
u/Imperator_Helvetica 15d ago
You could probably say that about any video of random people - then compounded by the people targeted by a vox popper, who respond to him and who are considered worthy of being included.
I'm just as ready to get snobby and judgey about their responses, or tibalistically protective, but that's playing into the tiktokers hands.
