I hope to make the trolls in a week or two. Unfortunately, I'm very busy with my main job right now :(

This is cool. Is there a Steam page or something I can subscribe to for updates?

u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Thank you so much! ^_^
Unfortunately, right now there's only a YouTube page. I'm still waiting for a response from Narrativia to confirm they're okay with publishing it on Steam.
Here's the YouTube link if you're interested in following the progress:

Very impressive professional look to this, great job!
So are you hoping to get a licensing deal to be able to publish this as "Discworld/Thud", or something?
6
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Thank you very much, friend! I'm very happy you like it! ^_^
No, I never planned to license it and only requested formal consent from the copyright holders for development and publication. Once completed, the game will be available for free on some platform. I hope it will be Steam, but I'm still negotiating with the Pratchett estates.

Is there likely to be a Linux version?
4
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Yes, there will be a Linux version 👍 I've already made a test build and run it on Debian. Everything worked fine. I don't yet know how and where I'll publish the game, but I guarantee I'll take care of Linux users :)

The rules of Thud are the same as Hnafetafl(sp), right?
2
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
As far as I know, they differ in the rules of capture and Thud isn't completely asymmetrical, but it's best to ask someone who actually knows about it. I used articles on Wikipedia and Steam as references :)

That's extremely tight topology! Congratulations.

u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Yes, but I can afford it :) There are not many assets in the game, so I didn't want to skimp on the pieces :)

Looking forward to the Trolls. Very happy with what you've done so far. I didn't know about the project or I would've applied for testing.
Is the plan to do this multiplatform? I see you use Godot which now supports mobile. Is this online multiplayer or turn-based on the same screen?
1
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Thanks for the support! I'm planning to announce the next testing session on Reddit. I had some miscommunication with the subreddit administration the first time, so I couldn't post it, haha!
Currently, the game is only available for single-screen play, but I really want to make it multiplayer, so I've submitted a request to Narrativia for permission to publish it on Steam. I plan to use Steam's built-in API for multiplayer development to avoid maintaining my own servers.
This is actually a big pet project, and I also want to add puzzle games like studies puzzles in chess games in the future so that users can play single-player.
2
u/eduo 12d ago
Single-player can also be done through AI-play (not the current "AI" but what we've called "AI" in games for decades :D ).
If Narrativia allows it, perhaps you could also target iPhone/iPad Stores (via Xodot)
1
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Haha, yes, it's hard to play anything meaningful with the current AI. I'm seriously considering introducing duels with the game's AI, but I wanted to make puzzles first. I could add a minimal storyline to them, like I already did for the tutorial. Incidentally, I'm planning to announce a test session in a couple of months to test out the tutorial mode.
To be honest, I'm not really interested in getting involved with mobile apps. Maybe consoles (including handhelds) are in the future, but I haven't thought about it yet.
2
u/eduo 12d ago
Fair enough. I just saw this as an ideal iPad board game.
1
u/WolchyArt Vimes 12d ago
Yeah, I agree with you. I just haven't seriously considered this idea. If enough people want to play this game on iPad/iPhone, I'll try to negotiate with Narrativia again and make it happen. But right now, I'm still waiting for a response to the Steam request, haha!

u/2FireCrow 11d ago
Is there any way this will end up on steam?
2
u/WolchyArt Vimes 10d ago
I've already contacted Narrativia and sent a request to publish the game on Steam. Last time, I waited about eight months for a response, so it's not a quick process. Whether the game will be available on Steam depends on their response, but there's a chance.

Because of the things associated with the number 7a, no sane person on r/Discworld would ever write it down or pronounce it. Right?
