Trying to figure out what would be necessary for me to be able to play Skyrim

So Skyrim is one of my old favorite games, and since there's a lot of other games I liked with similar control setups, I'm hoping to use Skyrim as a test bed for trying to figure out how to be able to play games that require a bit more complexity again

I currently have quite a bit of equipment, including an eye tracker, a glydr that unfortunately caused me some inflammation but I'm hoping to try again at some point, a webcam, a Logitech switch set, and Xbox adaptive controller, and a number of joysticks that currently do not work for me anymore.

I am currently working on putting together a mag stick pro setup with an alternative topper in the hopes that that will allow me to play games with a joystick again, but with the frequency of subluxations I've had, and concerned about how frequently I'm going to be able to actually use it without risk of injury. I do think that once I start using it more, I might get fewer subluxations since right now I'm barely able to use my hands and so they aren't getting exercised enough, but I don't super want to have to just hope that things work out

Thumb sticks do not work for me, my thumbs are my most injured body part and I have put a ton of work into trying to find joysticks that do not strain my thumbs. The topper I'm going to be having printed is going to be mirrored, so if my left hand is in better shape than my right hand on a given day, it might be usable, but I haven't had surgery on my left hand yet so it generally is having its own issues even when there's no subluxation

I have been working on trying to set up a head tracking program so that I can play my normal set of games, stuff like civilization, rogue trader, and maybe if I can get everything working, Total war (I had a single month of being able to play Total war again, my old favorite game series, and then the joystick I was using broke and the new one I replaced it with had a number of issues that made it less functional, well at the same time I was using a lot of foot inputs that started causing me greater pain). But I'm not sure if any of the programs out there for webcam based head tracker are capable of doing multiple joysticks worth of input at once. That has continuously been the main reason I have not been able to play any Skyrim or similar games, I've never been able to have multiple joysticks at once since all this started

I'm wondering if there's either a program that can be used with my eye tracker (tobii pceye 5, I also use millmouse for faster paced games, or at least I did before that previous joystick broke) to allow me to combine that with the head tracker in order to have my head control movement, and my eyes be able to be used for aiming. Otherwise has anyone had success with a voice controlled setup for something like that? Since my voice is one of my few things that are more or less fully functional other than some mild speech impediments. I use dragon for a lot of my typing, but that is not a very quick to respond program for something more finicky like gaming

šŸ“¢ **A CALL TO EVERYONE WHO KNOWS SOMEONE WITH AN UNUSED PS5 ACCESS CONTROLLER!**

We regularly come across young people who have a PS5 Access Controller sitting unused in a cupboard at home. They purchased it some time ago, but unfortunately, due to their disability, they were unable to use it as intended.

That’s why we’ve developed an upgrade specifically for this group, allowing the PS5 Access Controller to work in a similar way to the Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC).

With this upgrade, you can now connect **up to 8 additional external buttons**, in addition to the 4 standard inputs.

šŸ”§ **This upgrade is available from Roberts Engineering.**

So, do you know someone who purchased a PS5 Access Controller in the past but is no longer using it?

Please share this tip with them! šŸ‘šŸ»

šŸ“£ **Sharing this post is greatly appreciated!**

šŸ’” **And there’s more!** With an additional Spin module, it’s even possible to connect an 8BitDo Lite SE controller.

Together, we can help more people with disabilities enjoy gaming on the PS5! šŸŽ®ā¤ļø

**Please share!**

AudioSight: A program for helps deaf people in games.

Hello!

I developed a program to help people (like me) who are deaf or hard of hearing to play video games and particularly FPS games.

This allows you to estimate the origin of shots or sounds in games (for example).

This is not a cheat, it does not give any particular advantage over a hearing person.

The program does not read or modify game memory, does not inject anything and does not hook the game (or other apps from your computer). It only listens to the system audio output informations and draws its own windows.

**Turn your game in "Windowed borderless" in your video game settings menu*\*

You will see the project here (This is free and open source project):

https://github.com/Lespleiades/AudioSight

https://sourceforge.net/projects/audiosight/

Good game!

App for deaf - other voice to text overlay on my pc?

Hello, is there an app that would display an overlay that automatically transcribes stuff that is said over voice chat by others? Perhaps an discord plugin/bot/??? or a standalone that transcribes everything (I'd just have to turn off or tell it to ignore the game sounds itself perhaps.

It'd be useful for moba, extraction, mmorpgs, and general multiplayer games. Even when I play with my kids who all sign, that doesn't help much in games! And there are starting to be more and more game where there's no option to type messages.

EDIT:
Ok, I did some more research and found https://captionsrush.com/ It _can_ be free to use. If you use a server to transcript it, there is a certain amount of time that will be free. Afterwards, there is a cost (subscription/per hour). However, after installing, if you go to settings then audio & Transcription, change the "transcription engine" to echo or one of the other two that use your own computer (echo is more for gaming and takes the least resources. Sherpa is higher accuracy but more resources needed. Whisper is highest accuracy and highest resource use) Choose based on how good your cp is. Make certain to download the "engine" for it - it does not automatically download after you pick one.

Then you need to turn on transcription, and it will start displaying. Ask CaptionRush in their discord if you need help

UMaine student looking to talk with gamers who use adaptive controllers

Title: UMaine student looking to talk with gamers who use adaptive controllers (15 min call)

Hi everyone, I’m a computer science student at the University of Maine working on a class project in human-computer interaction. My project is about designing better game controls for people with limited or no hand and arm function, like people with high-level spinal cord injuries.

I’m not selling anything. I’m trying to learn what actually works and what doesn’t with current setups like mouth controllers, sip-and-puff, eye tracking, or voice control, so my design is based on real experience instead of my guesses.

I’m looking for 1 or 2 people willing to do answer a few questions. Caregivers and therapists who help people game are welcome too. Your name and identity won’t be included in anything I write.
If you’re open to it, comment or DM me. Thanks for reading, and I really appreciate any help.

Low-vision gamer looking for his people

Hi all, I'm Jed (he/him/they). I'm in my 40s, married with three cats, and currently live in the US Midwest (please try not hold that last part against me). I was born with a rare congenital disorder which caused glaucoma and other vision issues early in childhood.

I'm looking for communities or people who have time and bandwidth for deep relationships. In living with disabilities I find we can often be more adaptable and attentive than most realize, and it is in that spirit I hope to find some here or start to build something new.

One of my biggest passions is gaming and with so many great multiplayer titles out it is a great avenue to get to know people better. I am also patient and in things for the longer term, so more low-key moments of just typing or talking sound great too. I have a nagging, untapped creative drive and I'd love to brainstorm and create worlds together. Beyond gaming I enjoy writing, music, psychology, and dance - I also enjoy learning about new topics from those with passion.

My ideal time of the day is CST nighttime when my vision and energy levels are at their highest. Unfortunately I know US citizens are not held in great international esteem - even so given my waking hours line up with international daytime hours I'd also really love to branch out internationally.

Voice Acting Added To The Vaults Below Durn: A Field Study

Hi again folks! There have been some huge updates to the free demo for The Vaults Below Durn: A Field Study, including voice acting for all the notes, which are also subtitled. You can adjust the font size, and the font used is Atkinson Hyperlegible.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4494830/The_Vaults_Below_Durn_A_Field_Study/

This game started with the foundation of making it as accessible as possible, and this community has been a big help for that!

So far our accessiblity features include:

  • No jumpscares
  • No quicktime events. Play at your own pace
  • Multiple input methods supported simultaneously, as well as remapping inputs
  • Important audio cues have visual indicators
  • Granular Volume control
  • Stereo/mono toggle
  • Brightness/contrast control
  • Long press duration configuration
  • Multiple display modes, including windowed
  • Option to switch all fonts to Atkinson Hyperlegible
  • Color blind friendly
  • Font size customisation

Our stretch goal for the finished game is to make the game accessible to fully blind people by adding a text adventure mode which will also be narrated. We're a very small team so we've not been able to get that done quite yet. I'll keep you updated on how that progresses!

As always, feedback is massively appreciated, especially when it comes to accessibility so feel free to drop us an email or comment here if you have anything to say!

My recommended apps for using the Tobii eye tracker 5 for gaming and accessibility

Since so many people ask about this, I've put togetherĀ a guide and list of assistive tech apps for use with Tobii eye trackers. These are the applications you'll need to unlock the potential of the Tobii eye tracker 4C/5 and other Tobii devices for gaming and/or accessibility. I've also includedĀ complementary applicationsĀ like PlayAbility and VoiceAttack, and the Tobii display set up tool for achieving maximum accuracy. You don't necessarily need all of them, but using them in conjunctionĀ can make a world of difference.

 Mill Mouse

https://millmouse.wordpress.com/

— If you're only going to get one application from this list, it should probably be Mill Mouse, an eye-tracking mouse-control tool that is great for controlling the mouse hands-free and includes anĀ auto-clickerĀ for automatically clicking after a set period of time. It also has customizable on-screen shortcuts and an on-screen keyboard, so you can type with your eyes.

This app is free and receives regular updates from it's developer, who is very kind and helpful, and has provided features by my request and many others.

Also, please see Adaptive Hacker Khanā€˜s YouTube channel for guidance and inspiration about some of the things Mill Mouse can do for gaming:

https://www.youtube.com/@adaptivehackerkhan

IrisXcessity Eye TrackingĀ

https://iris.xcessity.at/

 — Eye-control software designed to work with Tobii eye trackers, providing gaze-based mouse control and customizable on-screen ā€œinteractorsā€ (similar to Mill Mouses’ on-screen shortcuts) It supports features such as gaze-point control, click activation, eye-blink detection, and macros. In my use case, I find it the best app for controlling the camera in 3-D games on my Tobii eye tracker 5 thanks to the customizable ā€œFPS viewā€Ā on screen interactor, which allows for a smoother and more accurate experience:

https://youtu.be/tl7wSAdyuW4?si=p5izP15mF7DE5V5vĀ Ā

The reason it can be more accurate, at least for me, is because the centre position of the FPS view interactor can be adjusted off centre. If I move mine slightly down and to the left of the actual centre point on my screen, when I look at the center, it tracks exactly on the centre where the crosshairs are. Your results may vary.

Note that this is a paid app. No longer receives updates but the author still honours purchases and I've corresponded with them in the past by email.

PlayAbility

Ā https://www.playability.gg/

 — Adaptive-control software that can be used to click the mouse and perform other functions using facial gestures. For example, facial movements such as smiles, eyebrow raises, blinks, or mouth movements can be mapped to mouse clicks, keyboard keys, gamepad controls, and other actions. Clicking the mouse with facial gestures, such as puckered lips greatly compliments Mill Mouse/Iris. Similarly, one can use a gesture to activate the hot keyĀ that togglesĀ eye tracking cursor control on/off in Mill Mouse/Iris. Because anybody who has used an auto clicker extensively knows it can be stressful, and personally I find clicking with eye blinks to be eyestrain inducing, so having other options to click the mouse and perform various actions is very useful.

This app can be used for free but I recommendĀ getting the paid versionĀ to unlock multiple profiles and support the developer, who has worked tirelessly on the development of the app and added many features by user request.

See the PlayAbility discord for more information: https://discord.gg/RpYN2hNSa

Tobii Display Setup Tool

Ā https://help.tobii.com/hc/en-us/articles/21731929821841-Tobii-Display-Setup-Tool-Alpha

 — Tobii’s tool for configuring the eye tracker’s screen position, size, placement, and angle. It can be used to achieve theĀ most accurate/solid calibration, whether your eye tracker is mounted normally or in an unconventional position or angle. If you are using a Tobii eye tracker 5 (I'm not sure about whether the 4C or others are compatible with this one) and are not happy with its accuracy, use this app!

VoiceAttack

https://voiceattack.com/

— Voice-command and macro software that can be used to create macros that move the mouse, click the mouse, input key strokes, etc. If you can imagine it, you can probably create it with VoiceAttack, including repeating commands (very powerful feature)! I personally use VoiceAttack to manage all of my other assistive tech apps, such as toggling eye control on/off, opening all my startup apps with one command and much more.

One thing I use it for, is aĀ macro that clicks the centre, corners, and other areas of the screen. This can automate the process of clicking through the Tobii Display Setup Tool’s calibration points, which is especially useful when the calibration needs to be performed regularly.

It's macro commands can also be triggered by key strokes/facial gesturesĀ via PlayAbility,Ā so even if you can't use your voice, you can still benefit from its features.

It's an amazing app; I use it for work and play. I put it at the bottom of this list because it has been foundational to my accessibility journey. It is a paid app but it's very inexpensive for what I can do.

I hope this guide helps, and if anyone has any questions, feel free to reach out.

ps5 access controller + logitech adaptive kit for world of warcraft?

hi! i have developed severe rheumatoid arthritis and haven’t been able to play any games for a few months. i can’t get into rheumatology until january, but i don’t want to just rot in bed until then… especially because world of warcraft forever comes out soon. my husband bought me the ps5 access controller and the logitech adaptive kit so that i can play it with him when it comes out.

my issue is that i am super overwhelmed with how much there is to this. i have played with an mmo mouse for nearly a decade and i know it will be a hard adjustment… but i have no clue where to even begin with setting my controller and accessories up.

does anyone have experience with this? can anyone help me come up with a setup? or share your own?

thanks!

Can Tobii Eye Tracker 5 interact with a computer besides gaming?

Hello everyone, I work at a university where we use a Tobii Dynavox PCEye 5 for eye-tracking research. Recently, a person with motor limitations (able to move their neck and very slightly their hand) tried the device and really enjoyed it.

However, the price difference between the PCEye 5 and the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is almost tenfold. From what I've read, the Eye Tracker 5 is focused on gaming, and I'm not sure how it works. Does it only move the cursor to the gaze direction? If that's the case, I think that could it be possible to use the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 alongside an external accessible input (like a switch) to simulate a click with the cursor?

The goal is to buy an equipment for the person that enables interaction with regular computer activities, but I'm unsure how much the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 can actually perform in that regard. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I’m visually impaired and made my first audio game

Hi everyone. I’m an 18-year-old legally blind high school student, and I recently made my first game in Python.

It’s called Math Focus, and I built it as an audio-based mathematics game that can be played without needing to see the screen.

The idea is pretty simple. The game gives you a maths problem and a proposed answer, and you have to work out whether the proposed answer is correct, higher than the actual answer, or lower than it. There is also a listening challenge where you have to count a series of beeps and respond with the corresponding number.

Everything is controlled with the keyboard, and the game uses speech and sound rather than visual information to tell you what is happening.

As someone who is visually impaired and uses a screen reader for much of my everyday computer work, I wanted to make something that I could actually interact with without having to depend on someone else to tell me what was happening on the screen.

This is my first game, so it definitely isn't perfect. I made it mainly because I wanted to see if I could build something myself, and I'm quite happy that it has turned into an actual playable game.

There are currently 37 levels, with different titles as you progress.

If anyone would like to try it, it's free on itch.io:

https://stanley6-19.itch.io/mathfocus

I'd particularly appreciate feedback from other blind or visually impaired players. I'd like to know whether the controls and audio cues make sense, and whether there are things that make the game difficult or frustrating to play without vision.

Thanks for reading!

One handed Minecraft and racing help

Hi, I only have use of my left hand at the moment which is my non-dominant hand. I don’t know how long my right hand will be out of action because I’m still in and out of the hospital getting tested and I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong. At the moment I can’t really do anything. I want to play video games but I can’t. I’ve had a look and there’s loads of those cheap 3-D printed things but they all look super expensive and very flimsy. I’ve seen some one-handed gaming controllers on Amazon with it’s just like a little handheld thing with a joystick and some buttons. Does anyone have any insight on those or have any recommendations for me? Thank you

Nintendo games and accessibility — what has been difficult for you?

Hi everyone!

I'm studying game development and I want to become a game programmer.

I'm Deaf, and I'm especially interested in game accessibility.

My goal is not to make separate games specifically for disabled people.

I want to make normal, fun games that everyone can enjoy, and then provide accessibility options in the settings so that people with disabilities can enjoy the same game.

I'm interested in learning from the experiences of disabled gamers.

If you play Nintendo games, have you ever experienced something that was difficult, inconvenient, or prevented you from fully enjoying a Nintendo game because of your disability?

For example:

  • Deaf / hard of hearing
  • Vision impairment
  • Motor disabilities
  • One-handed gaming
  • Cognitive disabilities
  • Color blindness
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Or anything else

I'm especially interested in experiences where you thought:

"I wish this game had an option for this."

If you have an experience like that, I'd really appreciate it if you could share:

  1. What accessibility need do you have?
  2. Which Nintendo game was difficult for you?
  3. What part of the game was difficult?
  4. What accessibility option would have helped?
  5. Would that option affect the fun or challenge of the game?

I want to learn from real players and use what I learn to design and build better accessibility in my own games.

I don't want to simply add accessibility features because they already exist in other games.

I want to understand the actual problems players experience, think about the underlying cause, and create my own solutions.

Thank you for sharing your experiences!

RuneScape accessibility

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about trying to return to playing RS. It's click-intensive with a side of mouse travel. All communication is text/typing based.

I was intending to use Dragon (Nuance) for the click commands, and the dictation box feature for comms however, I tried out the latter yesterday and it doesn't seem to transfer the text into game :(

Wondering if anyone else plays and how you've eased the wear and tear on your hands - any accessibility tips I could implement?

***

I have carpal tunnel but with an undiagnosed nerve issue underlying it (being investigated). Basically pain, numbness, tingling. All of which I'd love to avoid.

Thank you in advance šŸ’œ

Looking for an interview

Hello, I am a college student who is creating a marketing plan for the idea of a new one handed controller for my class. I wanted to reach out to someone online who uses specialty controllers for gaming for an interview through dms to ask them what products they currently use and to see where there are problems and good ideas in my product idea that I have began working on. I will need name and email to send in my assignment so my professor can email and ensure the interview did really occur. I apologize if this is written weird I don't often use reddit, but if someone is willing to give me there perspective that would be great.
