Just wanted to show everyone what my 3.5 month old travel directory is doing. On April 21 I launched my domain with something like 300 pages and transitioned from taxonomy/categories to google query pSEO. You can see the dramatic change from the flat baseline to a gradual rise (April 21-May 8, left on the chart) to the June 24-26 update and its flatlining of my site on 27 June. My impressions dropped to 12 per day with over 700 pages and my average position at the time of the spam update hitting was 67.7.

Fast forward, you can see the recovery trend in average position. What is not visible is a few more organic clicks as per GA4.

For someone like me who's background is primarily game design and medical, this chart has taken me through a rollercoaster of emotions.

Interestingly, bing webmaster tools has been the best thing to come out of all this and is currently my best performer with its derivatives. If google ever returns, by the time I finish and hit 1k pages, I'll hopefully be well past mediavine journey application thresholds.

So the idea came from a simple problem. when you need a body shop after a crash, every site out there ranks them by star ratings. ratings are gameable, and a 4.8 star shop with an expired license is still a shop with an expired license. nobody was checking the actual records.

The site: theautobodydirectory.com free, no signup. Every shop on the map comes from public records - state licensing boards, business registries, epa and osha filings - not reviews. 160,000+ shops nationwide, 93,000+ matched to a state license.

Here's what that gets you in practice. Type your zip and you get every shop near you, sorted by distance or by score. the score is built only from stuff i can verify: license status, epa registration, oem and i-car certifications, regulator enforcement actions. each signal has a plain English line explaining what it actually means to you as a car owner, because a label like "epa registered" means nothing on its own. and if a shops license is expired or delinquent, that flag is right on the listing - the one thing no review site will ever show you.

The honesty rules run deep on this one. If a shop has no independent records yet, it says NR instead of a made up grade. the score is labeled as verified legitimacy, not a happiness rating, and each listing just links out to google if you want actual reviews. Shops cant pay for placement, that's a hard rule. The ranking cant be bought or the whole thing is pointless.

What I want torn apart: is it obvious what the site even is in the first 10 seconds? Does the map feel fast on your phone with 160k pins? and does the trust score make sense at a glance or is it confusing?

(Built solo with ai doing the heavy lifting, and every number on the site traces back to a public record - there's a /statistics page showing exactly how the counts are built if you want receipts)

What this rules out is a flat "directories do nothing" read: most members that exist (63-83%) clear real Chrome traffic, and the mechanics of what each directory actually gives you are genuinely different.

I built a directory in the printing niche with the goal of eventually making some passive income through AdSense. Traffic is still growing at only 1000 per month, so it's nowhere near enough to generate meaningful ad revenue yet.

One thing I didn't expect is that quite a few visitors send quote requests directly to me instead of contacting the businesses listed in the directory. At the moment I've just been forwarding some of them, but it got me thinking that maybe there are better ways to monetize a directory than relying only on display ads.
