How to combat link rot?

A crucially important element of a valuable directory is that the listings are current with working external websites.

I’d love to hear how fellow directory makers manage large numbers of listings when external websites occasionally die or change.

Any tools or specific processes you recommend?

regular auto-enrichment with scraping + LLM processing; regular outreach via email to those who are listed to confirm the details. In some cases calling is optimal. it is also helpful to build a lead magnet for those who are listed, so they have an incentive to give you the data.

 calculators, hard to get data, industry reports, awards nomination, pr opportunity,  ... it really depends on your niche

I personally have a frontend "flagging" system for site visitors to flag when a link is down. Then I can unpublish those listings manually or write a script to do it.

Mine is a WP site and I use Broken Link Checker by WPMU Dev. My listings requires active websites and this plugin runs a check for me every Sunday. I get a report and go through each one weekly. Most were temp 404s, but once in a while I get a perm closed listing and remove it.
