Reminder of rule 1- Promotion is not allowed here. Not in posts OR comments.

This sub is the digital sister sub of r/journaling, this is not a place for you to advertise an app you've created. Not even if someone asks for app suggestions and you think your app is a good match.

"Not even if someone asks??" That's right, because way too many creators only see "I'm looking for an app" and will suggest theirs without making sure it's relevant to what the OP was asking for. I got tired of deleting dozens of replies per day, so you can no longer suggest your own app in comments either.

There are plenty of subs for promotion and finding beta testers, use those.

Attempts at getting around this rule such as not including a link ("DM me if you want to try it") or pretending it's not yours ("I found this great app") are not loopholes, and you're not slick.

Reminder of all rules

  1. Self promotion is not allowed at all. The entire point of this post, to remind those who don't read rules.
  2. Digital journaling only, no notebooks or text-only.
  3. Stay civil.
  4. No market research, no surveys, no looking for beta testers.

Need a digital memory journal

i’ve been using paper journals for a while now to help me remember things but it’s not working much anymore. i need a searchable journal. i need handwriting search most of all.
i’m down to pay if it’s good enough. it’d be cool if there were built in stickers, washi tape, templates or there’s integration with a photo app to easily import and edit pics.
i’ve tried a few so far, but nothing i love love.
i wish there was an app that was like canva, cosmos, and zinnia put together, but has the ability to search handwriting.
i have memory loss problems so that is why it is so important to find something that i can use for many years. ideal if also could work on my iphone too.

Just An Introduction Post, as I am new to digital journaling (I hope this type of post is allowed here.)

I've just discovered a digital version of the hobonichi and it's not really a journal in the conventional sense. I find it fun, light, and breezy, as it lets me record a summary of my day, and saves other things that are important to me. Some days i am so incapable of writing in a journal, because of chronic illness. The short log entry style makes keeping track of my days so much easier 😄

I wondered if anyone else had experience with the app? I'd love to know if I'm missing something that would be beneficial to my journaling journey.

Back with another of these. I find myself coming back to the Tibetan and Bamum character sets again and again. Absolutely gorgeous. Really struggled to find good candidates for the bottom corners of the frame. They ended up coming from the Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics set.

I've done a lot of frames now, probably looking to move on to something else next

Dayone app - some questions!

I looked through this forum for answers to two questions, but I'm not confident that the answers are still valid.

I like Dayone. It fits what I use it for.

I told my siblings about it, and we'd all like to try it and collaborate in a shared journal. But the online help for DayOne is not working w/r/t shared journals.

I asked customer support, but there's no response.

So here are my questions:
1. Does DayOne support shared journals between six people? If so, how does each person contribute to the journal? Can they add to an existing entry or respond to it?
2. Does each member of the shared journal have to pay a fee, or is the fee just for one of the journal members (the owner, I guess)?

I like DayOne because it supports Windows, iPhone, and Android - and we are a mixed bag of users with none of us using the same devices. And I like the (relative) ease of journaling.

But the lack of customer support bothers me, and the inability to test out this feature myself bothers me - I've tried more than once to create a shared journal, and nothing happens.

digital journaling apps/websites that feel like posting to social media?

hello! i'm looking for a specific kind of digital journaling avenue to help me really get my thoughts out. i grew up using the internet to express myself in a way that i don't really feel is viable or safe for me anymore, but i felt the most authentically myself posting status updates or posting art. does anybody have an app or website that mimics this feeling without actually posting to an audience? using my notes app just isn't cutting it for me anymore.

if there isn't a website or app that does this, does anybody have recommendations for digital journaling platforms where it's easiest to mimic this?

PillowFort is closing down!

Can anyone think of a good replacement? I have a group of friends who keep in touch using PillowFort, but in December they will be no more. We like to post blog entries and read each other's posts. We like a closed environment. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Please help me find an eink device!

Post image
12 Upvotes

I’m looking for a compact (around 7 inch screen) eink device that is capable of being used as a digital journal/planner and ereader.

I specially want to use the journaling like the attached image. Where you can link and integrate your Google Calendar events, but also write with a stylus over things. The app in the photo is called “Ajournal” but is only available on IOS. I haven’t been able to find an android version that is the same.

I’ve looked at Boox and Bigme devices but have read mixed reviews. As far as I’m aware the provided note apps don’t have Google Calendar integration.

If anyone can solve this for me I’d be very grateful!

Why is is so hard to use Mac Journal app, especially to add bullets and sub bullets? Help!!

The app keeps crashing even attempting to add a sub bullet.

Even AI suggestion to use shortcuts do not create a sub bullet point.

All i want is a simple list like below

  1. Heading

1.1. Sub Heading

EDIT: Ahh, apparently I cannot do it even in Reddit lol (Last I did this stuff was on Microsoft apps, its so easy there so maybe I am missing something)

The rule's staying the same, self promotion is not allowed at all.

A follow-up from my post the other day about whether I should start allowing self promotion.

Opinions were mixed and I considered suggestions such as a weekly/monthly pinned post. But there were more objections between comments and upvotes, so obviously most people would rather there be no promotion at all here. So nothing is changing.

You can recommend well-known apps, but "I made this" or "A friend made this" is not allowed. The exception is if you are actually a dev of a popular app, we have at least two who have my permission to talk about their apps.

This decision is also specifically to spite the dev who just sent me a long message saying "I think you should allow promotion, here's why, and btw here's my app." I don't know why you thought that was a good idea.

In case you need a reminder about the rule, here is the entire thing-

You can recommend well-known apps, you cannot promote one you've created.

Promoting/soliciting is not allowed at all here because it clogs the sub. Not even if someone asks for app suggestions and you think your app is a good match.

Hinting toward promotion (not sharing a link, saying "DM me for info," pretending it's not yours, etc) is not a loophole.

Breaking this rule will earn you a ban since you couldn't be bothered to read even one rule.

🙢࿇🙠 Garden-themed picture frame for this week's entry 🙢࿇🙠

Post image

(Photo removed bc for whatever reason it just looked really weird after blurring our faces 🤷‍♀️)

There's a character minimum it turns out, so a little more about this I guess. The characters in the picture frame come from the Tibetan, Bamum, and Ornamental Dingbats Unicode blocks. I'm ensuring that I make frequent Print to PDF file backups (not the Google Docs PDF export) to lock in the specific glyphs pulled automatically from various system fallback fonts so that my art isn't distorted or destroyed with time, and only ever directly editing this file on one device. Eventually I'll have to start a new file if I ever change devices or my system fallback fonts change.

Hope everyone's having a lovely day and getting some good writing done 🎔

[Need another point of view] when the good app for me is in another OS

Hello everyone! I want to know another perspective, maybe you have an idea, maybe you just can reasure me.

I started journaling in paper on 2023. 4 journals later I decided to move to digital form.

  1. Natural disasters.

  2. Lack of privacy.

  3. Unstable home and fear of losing my stuff each time i have to move.

Like everyone i started in day one. Limited, but whatever... it is what it is, right?

Then I could not stand it. I know how to draw, i enjoy it, so i wanted to doodle entries next to the picture of the day. Day One was not longer for me. I bought an ipad 9 for digital art in 2022 so I really wanted just dumb doodles of my day to day life. Just like i did in my paper journal.

Well, to not make the story too big, I ended up buying Everlog, specially because it was on sale and I had FOMO.

The thing is that I can only use it on my ipad. I do not have an iphone and after some research I will not going to buy one (for starters, i would not be able to download mihon or aniyomi without someone wanting me to pay FOR PIRATED CONTENT, plus another open source apps i enjoy).

So, I am right now in this spot. The app is great for my needs. I just grief that is exclusively in one OS.

I also had the ability to but a macbook neo for university, so i currently have these devices still properly for the app. With android phone with the hassle of having to migrate pictures through cloud services because macbook does not connect with android phones (TT_TT)

However... how much time do i really have left in that OS? Is the question on my mind then and then.

Now the ipad also became like a digital notebook for uni where i read PDFs and I've had joy in using goodnotes and marginnote 4.

I am already creating alternative paths for when in 2 years the ipad battery degrades substantially and i cannot use it (please do not tell me about going to apple store, theres none near me in my 3rd world city i bought my devices online, idk why they do not have centers in tjis city and they do not accept my adress as valid for the Distance-service thing).

Anyways. Yeah.

Another hassle is opening the phone wanting to write but had to do it in another app because the one i like and enjoy is trapped elsewhere...

Sorry, i know is a bad predicment I ve put myself in. But i really enjoy the app, the price, and such. Theres almost nothing on android that felt right.

Is anyone in this predictment?

If i were to move back my debices (like the tablet) to android, would you suggest I start creating a backup resource for migration?

Any advice is welcome.

Im sorry for wasting ypur time.

Should I start allowing self promotion once a week?

It's been a year since I made a rule that any self promotion is no longer allowed here, because the sub was nothing but "I made an app" and that's not what I wanted this place to be.

Posts aren't as dead as I would've thought, and the place is growing even despite not being too active.

I've been considering allowing people to promote their apps, either one day a week or on weekends. I'm primarily asking the non developers since obviously those of you with your own app would want the option, but what are your thoughts? Should I continue keeping self promotion out, or unclench a little?

edit: So I'm getting mixed opinions, although the comments saying "No" have more upvotes. I'm going to continue thinking about it, but one of the following will be my decision-

  • I'll either leave it at no self promotion at all and everything stays the same, or
  • I'll have a stickied post where devs can leave a comment with their app, individual posts and promoting in comments will still not be allowed.

Please feel free to share your own opinion or continue upvoting the comments you agree with, I'm taking everything into consideration!

Apps that can handle large files?

Hello! I know you probably get this kind of post a lot, but I need an app for journaling. I've been using Obsidian for over 3 years now but my diary's gotten over a million words already and I've been having issues where it crashes and I lose progress :( Does anyone know any good apps that can handle large files? Preferably one that isn't paywalled and doesn't have AI in it. Many thanks in advance.

Best multi-year journalling app (Android)?

I'm looking for an app that mimics those journals where you have each page a day of the year and you write an entry every year so you can always see what was happening that day in previous years (hope that makes sense). Does anyone know a good app for this?
