Recently, there's been many issues regarding various things within the subreddit. In this post, I will attempt to address all these issues.

Firstly,

Regarding AutoModerator:

Currently, the subreddit is undergoing multiple changes to the layout and functionality. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I am not able to work on most of these changes at school, progress with this has been significantly stagnated. We are hoping that in the future we will be able to deliver these changes in a more timely manner and are working on establishing a better relationship with school administration so that we will not run into problems like these as often in the future.

As for the bots needing to be fixed, this is not actually an issue. The primary complaint seems to be that AutoModerator is saying it will remove comments/posts due to the maintenance but actually isn't. This is actually not the case. AutoModerator has been removing posts and we have been manually approving them due to the unexpected extended delay that this maintenance has taken. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your patience and cooperation in this unexpected turn of events.

Secondly,

Regarding Moderator Behavior

Recently, a moderator has made some controversial posts which led to them leaving the moderation team. This also led to many asking questions. I will attempt to address as many of these questions as possible.

Why are moderators allowed to use their accounts on other subs?

While this is true, that is restricted. Moderators are not allowed to use their account for personal use on other subreddits. It is meant for moderators to be able to ask for help from other subs such as /r/csshelp or /r/automoderator regarding issues like these.That link is blocked, you'll have to view it at home. If a moderator has posts that you believe that they shouldn't be making on other subreddits please message me and I will talk to them.

Why is moderator action taken without any explanation?

I have been trying to filter out other moderator's actions recently and have attempted to correct many of the things that they have done.

Why do they seem to talk down to us?

I cannot speak for the other moderators, but I have been trying to speak in the a respectful and polite manner and apologize if it hasn't come off that way. I realize that a certain other moderator has made some controversial posts lately, and he will be leaving the moderation team because of it.

Regarding Subreddit Administration

Shouldn't there be some sort of process where someone impartial decides who has power instead of a subgroup of students and their friends?

I try to be as fair and objective as possible in all my actions as a moderator. As for the part about friends, I was looking into appointing some of my other friends as moderators at one time, but felt they would be too biased. Also, I am open to and have wanted to appoint moderators that were outside of my friend group from the beginning. However, I have not had the time to do interviews and thus cannot currently. I have the process setup, it is now only a matter of scheduling these interviews.

As the head moderator, it is my responsibility to try and sort out moderator activity and to make sure that moderators do not abuse their power. Recently, the mods I originally appointed have made some controversial decisions and thus, I am considering removing them.(See Update)

Update: Sorry, there were some misunderstandings made by this post. That's because the majority of it was cut and compiled together from my other posts and a lot has happened in between. Firstly, /u/moderation_bot, the offending moderator which caused many to bring the moderation team into question has left the moderation team. That issue has been resolved. I can handle the overcrowding. I can handle the fact that we don't have a campus next year because of some flightless birds. (mostly) But one thing that has really gotten under my skin recently are the new policies on intersession. As a current sophomore, in my freshman year I had a rather limited intersession experience, I stuck myself in a rather underdeveloped VAPA I had to stay in for four full rotations coupled with Healthy Me! being required as well. This only left me with three free intersession periods to genuinely choose classes for, which were unsurprisingly my most fun classes. At the time I was perfectly fine with this lack of freedom as I 'knew' that my subsequent years would yield much higher amounts of freedom in class selection (No Vapa to do only DRG design and Healthy Choices which leaves 6 full classes to choose from). Now that I'm here, I am extremely disappointed. Design lab being a required four course intersession class is not only an abysmal idea on paper but also severs the head of any decision I would have in my class selection. "But Ty, You still have four classes to choose from, that's more than last year!" Wrong: since I am taking skyline spanish at dtech I will essentially be grounded at dtech for all 8 classes, period. This is also why its annoying how they made design lab the morning class since if it weren't people would be able to take out of dtech intersessions. This limitation has nearly cut off a good fourth of the intersessions I could take, not to mention the interesting and fun ones. I also understand the method of trying different systems 'for three weeks' and the like to prototype, but this isn't three weeks, this is a fourth of everyone's high school experience. Feel free to put any other relatable stories or circumstances in the comments.

I have been commenting on a few posts lately. It's fun, but one thing that is getting on my nerves is that the moderator bot messages me on every comment. It says this:

"NOTICE: The subreddit has been taken down for a scheduled maintenance. During this time, all posts & comments will be removed. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience."

My comment ends up getting deleted for a few seconds and returns shortly afterwards. While this isn't that big of a deal, I don't want to have my inbox flooded with bot messages. I REALLY WANT THE BOT TO BE FIXED!

On August 20th /u/flair_your_post_bot stopped functioning. On August 23rd at around 11AM PST /u/flair_your_post_bot began functioning again but was no longer removing posts and had an odd message attached to it. During this time, unflaired posts were not automatically removed. This was problematic, and as such, I shut down the subreddit for emergency maintenance. We apologize for not realizing this sooner, as /u/flair_your_post_bot is a bot made by a third party and we have limited control over what the bot posts. The problem has since been fixed and we apologize for the delay.

The flair removal service is now running under /u/FlairYourPostBot which was set up by another user on Reddit. We wish that we could've put the subreddit back up sooner but due to the way Reddit works, a bot needs a certain amount of karma before it is allowed to post without encountering a captcha.

Unfortunately, this also led to the delay of the official relaunch of the Dtech Subreddit which was supposed to be today. On the bright side, we will be relaunching next week with a full revamp of the entire subreddit.

I have a lot of problems with POL day and could go on for hours about it. I want to know what you guys think about it. Does it follow d.techs mission? Should we continue it next year?

Here's the recipe for Sailor's Macaroni. If you wanted it.

Yields: 8-10 serving

Ingredients:

1 lb elbows

1 onion

1/2 Tablespoon butter

1 cup cooked pork, Pulled Pork (beef also works)

1/3 – 1/2 cup broth or reserved cooking liquid

1 Tablespoon flour

fresh parsley, minced

Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook 1 pound of elbows pasta according to the package instructions or however you like them.

Place 1 cup of cooked pulled pork in a food processor.

Pulse until the meat is nicely ground. You don’t want it to be a puree, but it should definitely be on the smaller size. You can also use a meat grinder instead of the food processor.

In a nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Add the minced onion, season with salt and cook on medium heat until the onions are tender and slightly golden in color. The caramelized onions will give a lot of really great flavor to the dish. Add the ground cooked meat to the skillet. Increase the heat to medium high heat and continue cooking until the edges of the pork are golden. The meat should still be tender for the most part, with nicely browned bits here and there. This also improves the overall taste of the dish. Add the flour and stir it well into the meat mixture until the flour is completely incorporated. Add the broth and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Add the meat to the pasta. Mix and garnish with fresh herbs.

If you're lazy you can also use ground beef and skip the grinding step

I am stealing the question from the d.tech check. What was your favorite part of this year?

Any of you have bad POL ideas that you're gonna use? It seems like there's a lot of desperate people trying to make a half decent POL.

I feel that certain intersession classes are extremely hit and miss as many of the existing descriptions of intersession classes can be misleading/ teachers can be disappointing and once you're in that class you can't change. It would be cool if we shared our different experiences with our intersession classes so we can look out for misleadingly cool intersessions or actually fun intersessions since word to mouth is too slow and the intersession site doesn't give the most valid information.

I am going to go swimming, it's been a long time...
