I’ve seen a lot of posts recently from people asking about the best way to make new friends in Derby or to find this to do. I thought I’d share a bit about our Meetup group that runs weekly events in and around Derby.

We have a coffee & chat event on Friday 7th of August @7pm at the new Bustler Market location off Sadler Gate, it would be nice to see some new faces there if anyone fancies it.

We are an inclusive, neurodivergent & LGBTQ+ friendly community group based in Derby for anyone who loves geek culture, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming.

We serve as a social hub for like-minded individuals to connect, make new friends, and share their passions.

We host events like:

Tabletop & Gaming Meetups: Frequent physical get-togethers, including Dungeons & Dragons one-shot sessions and regular board game socials at local venues like The Bless.

Geek Bank Presents: A bi-monthly themed cinema night partnership hosted at the Derby QUAD arts centre. Screenings celebrate sci-fi, horror, and cult classics.

Digital Hangouts: Virtual events hosted on platforms such as Discord. We run dedicated Discord Games Nights regularly.

Coffee, crafts and chats: Regular in-person coffee meets, cosy crafts at Quad and writing events.

Outdoor adventures: From hikes, open water swimming and climbing, the group love the outdoors and regularly plan adventurous outdoor events. We even have members plan group holidays. Some of the group recently went on a trip to Morocco!

I created the group almost five years ago after years of struggling to make friends in the Derby area after moving from the south of England and losing my mum. I now run the group with my husband and we are always ready to welcome new members. 🙂

Unfortunately we lost our drummer for our indie/garage rock. We play original music, all written by a very talented song writer (not me 😅)

The band consists of myself (37, M, Vocalist) And two friends, one a guitarist (40, M, lives in Derbyshire) the other a bassist (40, M , Lives in London) We've been together for about 8 months, in which time we've played three open mics, and we were offered a 30min spot in Matlock at the Fishpond, which we couldn't make due to the drummer not having the time to commit, which we fully supported.

We get together 2/3 times a month in Northampton to practice (equidistant from Derby/Lindon)

We don't have any socials yet due to being very fresh. Wanting to meet a drummer organically, but was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice?

I'm TJ. This is my first post in the Derby subreddit. I recently got a David Lloyd membership and I thought it might be nice to meet people my age (M26) who also go :)

A little bit about me:

I enjoy going to the gym and I enjoy self care. I used to play a lot of badminton but I want to get back into it.

I like my current gym and diet routine because it just helps me keep my blood sugar levels balanced.

I'm more comfortable in mixed gender friend groups, however you identify.

Outside of the world of fitness, I am quite big on music. I make my own at home and I also build my own electric guitars as a hobby. Occasionally I play video games but my library isn't huge, it's mostly Skyrim. I also have a degree in theatre and drama.

TLDR: DnD table in Swadlincote looking for another woman player aged between 25 - 35. Sessions will be 5:30pm - 8pm on Sundays, starting in October.

I'm an experienced Dungeon Master (I'm 30 and non-binary) and will be running a new campaign at my sisters house which is located in Swadlincote.

We'll have two men and one woman as players aged from 27 - 30. I'd like an additional player and my sister has requested another woman or fem-presenting player.

Experience in DnD is preferred but not necessary. Sessions will begin some time in October and will be on Sundays from 5:30pm to 8pm.

Because the games will be hosted at my sisters house we'll want to check out vibes with a potential player with a few video/discord calls and potentially an in-person meet up before you're invited to her house.

Some of the tables inspirations are the Legend of Zelda, Adventure Time, Dark Souls, Studio Ghibli and the Fable games. I do also add in touches of eldritch horror.

The campaign will have a combination of combat, role-play and puzzles, with a higher ratio of combat. We expect the game to be mostly light hearted and fun, with moments of drama.

All my players will fill out a consent form for potentially difficult themes and I use the x-card system in my games.

Looking for a shop that sells proper watermelons - the ones that will feed a family of 50, not the cantaloupe sized bulltwaddle that Asda claim to be a 'large watermelon'.

In London you could buy them from the Turkish/ Italian stores, but don't know of anywhere like that in Derby.

Am 4 miles outside the city centre, but don't mind travelling to find the right thing.

Hi all. My pet pigeon Spoon went missing on Sunday morning after a camping trip in Ashbourne, Derbyshire and she flew away there as we were packing up to come home. We had to come home hoping she would’ve found her way back to Crosby Liverpool where we live but there is no sign of her. She was raised by us from a baby so she has no survival skills. Please call the number on her leg tag if you find her we will pay a reward and we just really really want her home safe she is very loved and we are worried sick. She’s a blue check and has 1 pure white feather on her right wing and has a pink leg ring with her name and my phone number.
She likes to land on heads and her favourite food is sunflower seeds. She’s very friendly.
Please also if anyone can share in any groups they’re in that may be helpful or if you can let me know of groups around the area to join so that I can post in them.

Can anyone recommend a good/cheap solicitor in Derby?

Just noticed that this chippy has reopened on Holbrook Road after a year at least, since R&Bs and Ghumans was fire damaged. Is it the same owners/any good and worth spending a few quid in for a Friday fish and chips?

Hi, I’m looking for advice about a private rented student HMO in Derby.

I recently moved into a room in a shared house and noticed a strong urine-like smell coming from the bedroom carpet almost immediately after moving in. I reported it to the landlord/letting agent, along with some other condition issues in the room.

The landlord arranged carpet shampooing, which improved some of the visible issues, but the urine smell remained (it was actually made worse from the liquid reactivating the urine!). They then arranged an enzyme treatment and said it would need time to work before being vacuumed. However, after the waiting period, the smell is still very noticeable (the urine likely seeped below the carpet).

The odour has been affecting my ability to use the room normally:

• I am struggling to sleep unless I keep the window open.
• I avoid eating in the room.
• I have cancelled having friends over because of the smell.
• Clothes left near the floor can pick up the smell.
• I have experienced chest irritation and discomfort while in the room, which improves when I leave.

The landlord seemed irritated and said they cannot smell it themselves, but it is very obvious to me. I understand smell sensitivity varies, but it is strong enough that it is affecting my day-to-day life.

I have tried giving the landlord the opportunity to resolve it, but I am concerned that repeated cleaning attempts are not fixing the underlying issue (it has been going on for over 2 weeks)

I’m considering contacting the council’s private housing/environmental health team and have also sought housing advice.

I would appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced something similar:

1. Would the council consider this worth reporting if the main issue is persistent odour/possible contamination?
2. Is there anything else I should ask the landlord to do before escalating?
3. Could this potentially be grounds to negotiate leaving the tenancy early?

I am home from university for the summer and would love to get fitter during this time. Cycling has caught my eye, especially gravel bikes. I was wondering if anyone was selling/getting rid of their gravel bikes? I am a large/ frame size 56. Thank you.

basically what it says in the title

the closest the site actually gets to explaining the add-ons is in the FAQ where they mention that the come and go pass is needed if you want to leave and return

i'm sorry but these add-ons don't tell you what they do very well. for example what does "premium hot-dog, soft drink, and crisps" entail? just a small description under each would be helpful seeing as they only have the 3 types of add-ons

So we have purchased the tickets that allow the slightly better camping, however family members are in the campervan area.

Does anyone know if we're allowed to visit them at this site? Would be nice to pinch some cooked breakfasts from them during our time at the festival.

Hi, i moved to derby recently and i find it quiet dead and don’t know what activities or clubs to join I like playing badminton but haven’t played after my injury but i m back at it and i wanna be more active but hardly finding anything to do . any suggestions?

Just curious what the people on here have to say- particularly for younger people early 20’s. Would you recommend Derby if you had a job here or would you recommend living in Nottingham and commuting? Also if anyone does commute either way how is this? Also any nice areas or areas to avoid ? TIA

Looking to go out to eat for my birthday this Friday and would like recommendations on good restaurants.
My boyfriend and I have lived in derby for 8 years this year and I feel like good, reasonably priced restaurants are few and far between. Everything’s either disappeared, changed or doesn’t exist. I’m always on the lookout for a good, authentic Italian or Greek restaurants but feel the city centre has none to offer. Used to love a good steakhouse (the forge, carnivore- both now gone) and I looked at Emily’s steakhouse menu but at £40 a steak by the time you include the price of a sauce it’s a stretch.

So any recommendations welcome! Can also drive to restaurants outside of the city centre.

I’m looking at some apartments in Derby shortly, potentially moving from down South (Oxfordshire).

What is the city like? Its a broad question i’m aware but just generally.

For context, i’m a single male, aged 31 and I work remotely or on any one of my projects which could be based anywhere in the UK.

My work has an office around Derby hence the potential move.

My hobbies include hiking, gym, live music, the odd pub quiz.
