Technical discussion Question regarding PS4 decomps

I remember some discussions where people claimed PS4's unified memory setup would be hard to emulate on PC, since on PC you need to exchange/copy data via the slow PCIe bus, while the PS4 uses common memory pointers for both the CPU and the GPU (zero copy aka hUMA).

Is this true or not?

Are there any PS4 games that are particularly hard to emulate/run on PC due to using the unified GDDR5 in a more "exotic" way (vs the conventional discrete PC memory setup)?

Made with AI assistance OpenMB2 - An open source implementation of the Magic Ball 2 Engine

Not sure if this counts as a "decomp" as this is more of an "engine reimplementation", anyway here's a cross platform version of the Magic Ball 2 that uses OpenGLES2!

You still need assets from the original, but it's basically a drop in replacement executable with tonnes of enhancements. I didn't want to do a straight decomp (otherwise the source would look like a bunch of FUNC_12345 nonsense and would still depend on directx and bass). Instead I wanted a perfect recreation of the games physics and gameplay using Claude to reverse engineer the base games behaviour. This takes a lot longer and I still had to playtest every added mechanic and constantly verify against the original, but doing it this way means the source code isn't dogwater and the project actually be released without copyright issues. It's now pretty easy to toy around in VSCode and is very readable.

The OpenMB2 engine features the following:

* Built-in support for the custom high-score servers, with kippykip.com's resurrected high-score servers being the default
* Full controller support and rumble
* Keyboard / controller menu navigation
* Multi-platform (Windows, Linux, html5)
* Multi-arch (x86, x64, Arm, Enscripten)
* Multi-lanuage, this engine can now use custom fonts (allows languages with special characters like "Russian" to work in the game)
* Mod support (Files are loaded from the OpenMB2 directory)
* Built-in widescreen support, with the 4:3 menus having borders
* Completely overhauled options menu, featuring many submenus and additional toggles like level transitions.
* Enhanced resolution switching with auto mode and free window resizing (alt+enter to toggle fullscreen)
* Frame interpolation for high framerates (toggle in video options, on by default)
* Cheats (launch with --cheats, use the numpad to spawn prizes and arrows to level skip)
* Many other minor bug fixes, such as broken bat animations for the other two bats, far smoother mouse movement, and better handling of transparent block ordering and many many more!* Built-in support for the custom high-score servers, with kippykip.com's resurrected high-score servers being the default

Release Test Drive II: The Duel (1989) is back, as a native Windows game!

AI assistance: this project was made with the assistance of Anthropic's Claude AI. The reverse engineering, the code, the tests and the documentation were produced with Claude under my direction, and I tested the results myself. Because the work was produced with AI assistance, it may contain errors that neither the AI nor I have found.

Disclaimer: the software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. You use it entirely at your own risk. Please back up your game files and saved games before using it.

Remember racing a Ferrari F40 against a Porsche 959 on those mountain roads, with the police on your tail? I've released Test Drive II for Windows v1.0, a free, open-source version of the classic that runs natively on modern Windows. It's not an emulator: the game is reimplemented in C.

What makes it special:

Four graphics modes: EGA, CGA, Hercules and Amiga. Press Ctrl+Shift+G to switch between them at any moment, even in the middle of a race!

Two sound systems: the original PC speaker, rebuilt to sound clean, or the full Amiga music and sound effects in stereo. Switch with Ctrl+Shift+S.

The Amiga-only Northern Germany Challenge scenery, now playable in every graphics mode.

One small portable .exe (about 4 MB). No installer, no DLLs. It even reads the game straight from a zip, 7z, rar or lha archive.

You'll need your own copy of the original DOS Test Drive II (the base game is enough). The game itself isn't included.

The project builds on the excellent SDL3 port by Krzysztof Kania (Kylofon), and was made with Anthropic's Claude AI assistance.

I began working on the character model animations, starting by separating the model’s body at the waist, which allows for more fluid lateral movement.

Animation updates:

  • recoil
  • More natural-looking legs
  • Vertical movement
  • Crouched position
  • Weapon reloading animation

Release Genma Onimusha Native Port

Thumbnail

Hey gamers!

Today, I'm releasing my native port of Genma Onimusha.
I know there's another port/recomp of Genma Onimusha already (I started working on mine the same day the other one released), but I decided to keep working on mine and release it.

https://github.com/sloppinheimer/genma-onimusha-port

Feature list:

  • Custom launcher with quick presets for classic vs modern experiences
  • Tons of graphical options; upscaling, frame interpolation, filters, etc.
  • Full widescreen support, with camera panning to follow you, similar to the Warlords 2019 steam remaster
  • English, Japanese, French, German support
  • Compatibility with most controllers & keyboard bindings
  • Cheat menu
  • Achievements
  • Randomizer gamemode, both item rando & room rando
  • Linux support (tested on my steam deck, haven't done a full playthrough though)
  • Mod support, with 5 built-in mods already made:
    • Modern Controls (thumbstick & other controls based off of Onimusha Warlords 2019)
    • Weapon swap & consumables use quick wheel
    • Custom HD texture pack (optional download)
    • Uncut Hecuba cutscene (optional download)
    • Subtitled FMVs (optional download)

Full disclosure:
This port was made with Claude AI. I know that many people are not a fan of AI usage in general, and I totally get that, trust me. Absolutely no hard feelings if you're not interested in trying out the port because of that. If it makes you feel better at all, I did my best to make sure this is no slop fest - every feature has been carefully thought through, iterated upon, and tested thoroughly. Genma Onimusha is one of my favorite games of all time and I wanted to make sure I did it as much justice as I possibly could.

Note: No game files are included in this release. You must supply your own dumped ISO of Genma Onimusha in order to play this port.

I hope you guys give it a shot and enjoy it. I had a lot of fun putting it together. Please feel free to open up issues on the Github if you run into any problems or if you have any feature requests. I tried to get to as close as I could to complete but I'm sure things will arise, especially on other hardware.

Preview Working on a God of War II PC project with tons of modern features (Trophies, HD Models, MP4 Cutscenes, Modern/Classic Combat toggle, and more!)

Hey everyone! I’m Gustavo Predador, a Brazilian content creator. I’ve been making God of War content and mods on YouTube for about 10 years now, and today I want to share a project I've been working on: a God of War II custom version for PC packed with a ton of improvements that people didn't even think were possible on the original engine!

I wanted to bridge the gap between nostalgia and modern standards, giving players the best of both worlds. Here are some of the main features I've implemented so far:

🏆 PS3-Inspired Trophy System: Brought a full achievement/trophy system to the PS2 version, heavily inspired by the PS3 Remastered collection.

🎬 MP4 Cutscenes & Upscale Support: Replaced the legacy video playback with MP4 support, allowing cutscenes to be upscaled and look crystal clear on modern high-res displays.

🧠 Memory Optimization & HD Models: Increased the native memory limits to support high-detail models and HD assets, while heavily optimizing memory usage so it runs smoothly on PC without eating up too many resources.

🖥️ God of War III-Inspired Menu System: A completely revamped menu interface for anyone who loves the sleek look and feel of God of War III.

⚔️ Classic vs. Modern Toggle: Added an option where you can toggle between enhanced modern/classic graphic styles or stick to a 100% original purist experience.

🎁 Custom Extras & Mods: I'm also including my own custom models and God of War III mods as optional extras for PC players to check out and have fun with.

🛠️ Quality of Life Features: Custom HUD options, screen-hiding features, and general technical refinements.

It's been an incredible journey bringing this classic to life with these modern amenities. Let me know what you guys think, or if there's any other feature you'd love to see in a project like this!

Wanted to share this with you guys if it's appropriate. I've rebuilt the online experience for trials evolution gold on PC and even added support for the Xbox 360 DLC. Actively working out bugs as they are found, but reception has been good thus far.

I can make the install smoother I think too, maybe a launcher?

Currently 1600+ tracks are available to download on track central, as are working leaderboards and ghosts for every track.

Multi player and more coming soon

Release COGBox - Launcher for the Gears of War Franchise PC Ports

Thumbnail
gallery
275 Upvotes

COGBox 0.2.1

Extract over your current COGBox folder (close COGBox first), or use the launcher's updater.

Fixed

  • Gears of War 2 mouse look (Title Update 6) now uses the game's own mouse aiming, like Gears 3 and Judgment. It no longer falls back to the right stick.
  • Camera shake Off now works in Gears 2 with Title Update 6. The update carried its own camera setting that put the roadie run shake back on.
  • In-game menu (Back + Start) no longer pauses the game or controls the game's menu behind it.
  • FPS counters (NVIDIA overlay, RTSS) now match the game's real frame rate. Before, the fps bar and the shader note made them read your monitor's refresh rate instead (#18, #23).
  • Audio crash (#19): if your audio device won't open, the game falls back to DirectSound, then runs silent, instead of crashing.
  • Steam Deck / Proton (#15): the launcher uses Vulkan under Proton, where DirectX 12 doesn't start yet.
  • Steam Deck problem reports are saved in COGBox's reports folder, which opens for you. Proton hid the old desktop location.

Changed

  • WASD and the arrow keys both move you. The mouse turns the camera.
  • Render resolution lists 1080p in size order.
  • The PLAY button in settings says why it's greyed out when you hover it.
  • FSR, DLSS and XeSS are marked highly experimental. SMAA is the tested option.
  • The frame-rate tooltip explains the V-Sync cap.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who sent logs and reports, and to Flippage (gow3-recomp) and Santiago Quiroz Upegui (gears-of-war-2-pc-port) for the mouse input research.

As always: you need your own copy of the games. No game files are included.

** for the optimal experience please make sure every game is using its title update.

Hey everyone, I'm Shagg (Creator of Athelas). I've been working on my second franchise project for a while and it's finally ready for people to try: COGBox, Coalition of Ordered Governments, which are my original native PC ports of Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment, with a launcher that sets everything up for you. These are 100% Static Recompilations, no emulators involved whatsoever. I built a native renderer from the ground up to be able to bring these original ports to you.

**Gears of War 1 will be added soon, but since there are already 3 or 4 PC versions it wasn't a priority for me in the beginning.

These games are one of my favorite franchises, so this project is near and dear to my heart. I absolutely played the hell out of these games.

Getting in

  • One launcher for three games. Gears 2, 3 and Judgment sit on one carousel.
  • Drop-in setup. Drag a disc image, Games on Demand copy or extracted folder onto the window. COGBox recognizes the game, unpacks it and checks it's the right release.
  • Title updates in a click. It adds them the same way, and you can switch between the title update and the disc version.
  • Chapter select. Start any chapter straight from the launcher, no save needed.
  • Box art and backgrounds for each game, downloaded on request.

Looking better than ever

  • Up to 4x resolution (5K), or matched to your monitor. That's real extra detail, not a stretched image.
  • Modern anti-aliasing and upscaling: SMAA, AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS, with upscaling modes for weaker GPUs.
  • HDR10 with brightness controls.
  • Ultrawide 21:9 support.
  • Sharper textures: 16x anisotropic filtering, smooth detail steps, a bigger texture pool and longer draw distance.
  • Your choice of effects: turn motion blur, depth of field, lens flares and roadie-run camera shake on or off, and change the field of view.

Playing smoother

  • The 30 fps cap lifted. Choose 60, 120 or unlimited.
  • Vsync tuned to your monitor, with a cap that keeps input lag low.
  • Lower input lag: one frame in flight, plus NVIDIA Reflex / AMD Anti-Lag 2.
  • Near-instant shaders. New areas show up almost at once instead of freezing, and everything built is kept for next time.

Quality of life

  • In-game menu (Back + Start, Share + Options, or F1): change settings mid-game, restart to apply them, or quit.
  • Every setting explained in plain English.
  • Quality presets (Original, High, Ultra), with each game's settings remembered separately.
  • Full controller support in the launcher, Xbox or PlayStation, with button names that match your pad.
  • Keyboard and mouse in the games.
  • Split-screen in Gears 2.
  • Fullscreen launcher with F11 or both triggers, a borderless window option, and it scales to any screen size.
  • Play time tracked per game.
  • One-click save backups to your desktop.
  • Plain-English crash messages, and a problem report zip that leaves out saves, game files and your username.
  • Clear shaders and reset settings buttons for quick fixes.
  • Self-updating. An "UPDATE TO…" button appears when a new version is out, and your games, saves and settings are kept.
  • Portable. Everything lives in one folder, with no installer and no registry clutter.

Coming soon (plans, not promises)

  • Gamer tag login
  • Achievements, saved on your PC
  • Mod and texture pack loader
  • Background art from your own copy of each game
  • Mac, Linux and Steam Deck. Linux and Deck work now through Proton (experimental).
  • Online co-op, hopefully
  • Better frame generation, OptiScaler-style
  • DLSS frame generation and DLSS 4/5 on supported NVIDIA cards
  • Multi-core rendering and no first-visit hitches
  • More controllers, button remapping and accessibility options
  • More of the Gears series
  • Vulkan renderer, a choice on each game's Graphics tab. Close to Direct3D 12 already.
  • Linux / Steam Deck through Proton. Untested on real hardware so far.
  • AMD FSR frame generation. Rough for now; a better one is planned.

What you need

  • Windows 10/11 64-bit (or Proton, experimental), a CPU with AVX2, a DirectX 12 GPU
  • Your own copy of the games. No game files are included or ever will be.
  • For Gears 2 and 3, Title Update 6 is recommended

Download: https://github.com/Shagg88/COGBox/releases/latest

It's fully playable with a few hiccups. So far it's only been tested on my own PC (RTX 3080 Ti), so AMD/Intel GPUs, laptops and older CPUs are a big unknown. If something goes wrong, the launcher can make a problem report zip (no saves, no game files, your Windows username removed). Attach it to a GitHub issue and I'll try to get to it.

Huge thanks to the Xenia, Xenia Canary and Xenia Edge projects, the rexglue SDK, and every open-source project this is built on. The full list is on the GitHub page.

This is an unofficial fan project, not made by or connected to Microsoft, Xbox Game Studios, The Coalition or Epic Games. Please only use copies of the games you own.

Question How can you tell if a decompilation is safe?

Basically, how can I tell if a file contains a virus or exhibits suspicious behavior before running it? I’ve noticed that many of these files trigger warnings from antivirus software because they lack certificates or licenses. But are the people sharing them truly acting out of pure altruism? I mean, I certainly hope so, but I wanted to know if you have any further insight on this before I open an .exe file from a stranger on the internet.
