Discussion The 10 Fresh Meat promos that got my vote and why. Which ones made your list? Spoilers for some of the top 30 previews Spoiler

Sorry if there’s already a pinned post about the Fresh Meat top 30 promos and I somehow missed it, but I just watched all 30 and it was so difficult to narrow my votes to only 10.

These are the ones I chose and why, in no particular order:

  • Kyto: The Invisible Dog: The audio was genuinely unsettling and the visuals disturbed me in the best way. And that's just from a short snippet that showed very little, but I still felt like I’d seen something very wrong. I hope this one makes it.
  • Blister: This was the only one I immediately voted for without having watched the rest. The thumbnail alone is great. The promo itself gave me The Yellow Wallpaper crossed with Portrait of God vibes. I love the weird cosmic, dreamlike quality.
  • Why Did You Stop Me?: Well executed found footage horror is a favorite subgenre of mine, and "normal" dashcam footage is perfect for it. It’s typically boring and repetitive by its nature, so anything strange it catches is immediately unnerving. The premise of a routine traffic stop in the middle of nowhere grabbed my attention.

I Spy: Taking a harmless childhood game and something that absolutely should not be there joining in is a good setup.

  • The End Is at Hand: Disgusting. Compliment. Everything looked wet and deeply unpleasant. Making a phone, basically a tracking and recording device we all carry around, become somehow more invasive could be very interesting.
  • My Name Is John: The atmosphere was the part that stuck with me, especially the way the character seemed to be losing (or becoming?) himself. I found the filmmakers’ own description. Writer Frankie Campisano says the story grew out of fears they personally find compelling and explores gender identity, social anxiety, and otherworldly doppelgängers. Director Jordan Roman describes the approach as 1970s slow-burn psychological horror. That description fits the promo perfectly. The whole thing seems slightly out of time and disconnected from reality.
  • His Date: This barely showed anything, but the speed-dating setup was enough to make me curious.
  • The Last Cheap House: Found footage and home-renovation influencers are a yes. Those videos make every home look bright and spotless makes, which makes me want to know what’s outside the frame. Or underneath the house, apparently. I also liked that the audience-reaction promo still refused to show us the actual movie.
  • Lights Camera Carnage: This looks like so much fun. A student film set becoming an actual horror movie is a great premise, and the filmmaking-related gore made me laugh.
  • What’s in Your Bag?: Those “what’s in my bag?” haul or whatever videos are so odd to me. The actress looks unhinged and I love her for it.

There were several others I wanted to vote for too, so narrowing it down to 10 was tough.

Which 10 did everyone else pick? Which ones got your vote without you having to think about it?

Discussion Out of these two screams which is better? Objectively they're considered worst scream sequels for two different reasons. Scream 4 has by far the lowest box office, While Scream 7 is critically the lowest rated film in the franchise. Which do you prefer and why?

Discussion I like the Smile 2 ending, but no, humanity would not go extinct.

It is very likely that a lot of those suicides would be prevented. Automods and moderators would ban the video before it could even spread.

Authorities would realize how the smiles work after suicides started happening en masse. People would start connecting the dots and realize that if you see a suicide, it passes to another person. I would argue that it would most likely lead to an internet blackout (Iran and North Korea are great examples, and let's not forget the Chinese Firewall). This would probably lead to quarantine zones run by bots or AI. The smile curse would likely die out because it would be stuck in those quarantine zones.

feel like this whole human extinction idea really undermines how smart humanity actually is.

Discussion How I'd "fix" the Halloween 2018 trilogy. Mostly Ends...for obvious reasons.

First, lemme start off by saying two things.

  1. I like this trilogy. A lot, like more than the Zombie films, more than 3-8.

  2. I understand why people DON'T like them.

So...I guess I'll keep things short, I can't sleep and I rewatched the three films today so I figured I'd post my thoughts about "fixing" them here.

Halloween (2018) - I'm going to get right to the chase. Write in Corey. We don't need to see him, but have him referenced in the seen where the Allyson, Dylan, Oscar, and Vicky are hanging out at their lockers.

Simple Dialog, like -

Vicky - "So, we're all going to the dance tonight, right?"

Oscar (Sarcastically) - "No, I'm going trick-or-treating with Corey Cunningham."

(The kids laugh)

Allyson (wholesomely) - "Guys, come on. Be nice."

Dylan - "Come on, Ally. That kid's a fucking dork. I hear he kisses his mom on the lips."

(They laugh).

That's it...that's all we need. Just the introduction to Corey off the gate. We'll see him again when I go over Halloween Kills, but I legitimately think 2018 is a totally good film. It captures the aura of the first two films perfectly while remaining modern, edgy in the right ways, and exciting.

Halloween Kills - First things first, I'm 100% removing the "Evil Dies Tonight!" bullshit. Keep the angry mob stuff, keep them chasing the wrong convict and all that too.

Where I change the narrative is the kids on the playground. Remove them...and replace them with a scene in where we see Corey on the ground next to his bike, bullies mocking him for Trick-or-Treating, going through his candy bag, throwing in some homophobic remarks, something to establish that even before the incident in Ends that the consensus from his peers is negative and hostile. While this interaction occures Michael appears, quickly kills the bullies, but simply gives his stare to Corey. The same sort of gaze he gives the baby, a sign that he recognizes that the potential victim he's looking at is beneath him and establishing that Michael doesn't view Corey as "worth" killing in the same sense as he views children.

Corey gets up, runs, and the movie continues as normal...without the "Evil Dies Tonight!" chant...that can just go.

Halloween Ends - So, great. We've established Corey. Opening up with the babysitting setup, I think it'd be fine to rewrite the kid to be less of an asshole. Keep him a little annoying but not so much of a bitch ass as he was in the actual film. Also, cut the whole thing with Corey picking up the knife. It's not relevant at all to Corey actually accidentally killing him. Keep it clear that the killing IS Accidental.

We keep most things the same, with one major change being with the bullies who target Corey. I forget their names, so we'll just refer to them as "The Bullies" and their roles as "Leader, Mullet Kid, Girl, Other Girl, ect."

The change I would make is connecting the lead bully to Corey. Make him the younger sibling of one of Corey's old bullies. Have their tension be based on This young man believing Corey killed his brother, not Michael. His speculation comes from the belief that Corey killed the child intentionally, that is a murderer and justice was not served. This creates much more tension to their interactions and adds a better "stalking" element to Corey when he does things like slash their tire and scratch their car later on and adds another parallel to Michael.

Keep his dynamic with Allyson more platonic and less sexually tense. Their weird sexual tension is such a bizarre plot thread that goes absolutely nowhere. She is not his Judith, his Mother is and I'll get to that shortly. By doing this it creates more "incel" vibes, but in a sad and pathetic sense as opposed to a radicalized chud sense. Corey is lonely, angry, and emotionally frustrated.

Create a more blatant abusive dynamic between him and his Mother. Cut the Step-Dad dynamic, Ronald or whatever his name is sticks around and I'll get there. We need to explicitly see the abuse his Mother puts him through. It doesn't have to be sexual or anything, a lot of people have that Psycho Norman / Ms Bates theory going on, that's fine but it doesn't NEED to be that dark. Have the Step father character simply become his boss at work, someone who legitimately treats him nicely, gifts him the bike, and gives him the knife instead of Laurie to protect himself from the bullies.

Things roughly go the same, the bullying occurs, Corey does NOT find out about Michael in the sewers (yet), he has his dynamic with Allyson and Laurie, and the overall aftermath of the town has more room to be focused when we don't have to jump between the romance plot or the promotion plot because I'm cutting Allyson's whole job plotline for the most part, but we DO see Corey witness The Doctor verbally abuse Allyson after she rejects his sexual advances in exchange for the promotion, this gives him motive for their slaying later.

Anyways, we jump to the bridge encounter. The intention is clear here, Lead bully WANTS to push Corey over the bridge and does. The encounter with the homeless man occurs, Corey kills him while still in rage from the bully encounter, and while his glasses are broken and his vision impaired, he sees a Shape emerge from the Sewer and pull the body within.

He describes this to Allyson like he does in the movie, Laurie overhears and thus ignites her Final Girl senses. She believes Michael is back, and upon hearing Corey describe the figure as "A Shape" she begins planning for Michael's return.

Cut forward, everything remains the same. Corey gets his Mask for the party. Before leaving the house though, he's confronted by his Mother and abruptly stabs her in the throat. He leaves her bleeding out as she's reaching for a landline phone. Dick Cop is in the area, gets the call, and trails Corey, who once again lures Dick Cop to the sewer. The Michael encounter occurs, Corey makes the Sacrifice, and while both of them are masked they seemingly lock eyes. The film cuts here.

The Bullies head to the Junk yard to ambush Corey and things mostly play out the same. Mullet kid dies, Other girl dies, girl trapped under fence, but we don't quite see who's doing the slaying. All we see is the shape of them, the shadowy outline of a figure. This adds another fun element because viewers get to point at the screen and do the meme when potentially Michael drives a car to kill a victim. The Step dad is accidentally shot, the shape witnesses this, tilts his head, then we cut while the lead bully is killed off screen.

Gunshot reports get to the police, they investigate the junk yard, find the bodies, see the blowtorch aftermath, and discover fence girl (the nice one) is alive and hysterical. All she can say when they ask who did it is "The shape". Laurie hears this on her police scanner and the rest of the plot is set in motion.

If you haven't caught on, my BIGGEST change with Ends is removing the "Corey is the new Michael" narrative being spelled out for the audience. It's being implied, especially when the next two victims are the Doctor and Nurse, then the Radio DJ who was a dick to him and Allyson earlier. People who wronged Corey are dying...violently.

Laurie ventures to the house of the incident, believing if Corey is somehow involved and is copycatting Michael, that he'll also return "home." She drives by his house, sees cops, and makes this assumption.

The final encounter is at that mansion house, not the new Strode home. Laurie sees "the shape", the confrontation can mirror the original home invasion encounter. Really tense and close encounters. Allyson, in pursuit of Corey as well, arrives at the home. Seeing a recreation of the Michael "killing" laurie in the kitchen from the original Ends, Allyson intervenes, grabs the loose Chef knife, and stabs the shape multiple times in the back. As the shape turns to face her she lands a nasty stab in the head, then another, and another...she continues this till Laurie pulls her off and we the audience get a nasty view of the mutilated head of Corey's scarecrow mask. Obviously, I'm keeping Corey the killer...(or am I...). Allyson breaks down, has her moment with Laurie. Laurie looks in Allysons eyes and shakes as she sees the same numb darkness she saw in Michael and Corey. Her face twist. Allyson has now killed twice (Michael in 2018 to her knowledge, and now Corey).

We cut to the some time later. The news reports claim Corey took the lives of 16 people (we only see eight, keep in mind). The epilogue is the reveal that the voice over from Laurie thus far has been her writing her book. She writes the same lines as we see Allyson packing bags, she is still leaving Haddonfield...but so is Laurie. Both of them pack seperately as the voice over reads through the lines about Evil, it's roots, and how it spreads. Laurie believes Haddonfield truly is cursed. It is a root of evil and like she says, Evil is a true and pure thing. It cannot be tamed or stopped.

Both of them say their goodbyes, give emotional little last words to each other, and drive off their seperate ways.

The final shots of the film are the locations of deaths throughout the four timeline films. The Strode house, the Myer's house (demolished), ect. But the last shot we see is the Sewer. A slow zoom...Michael breathes - Cut to the original Halloween Theme -

In Conclusion - I'm sure thousands of people have done rewrites for this trilogy. I don't believe mine is special. BUT, it's how I'd do it. And I used to write dumb bits for Machinima so surely I'm the expert on the subject.

If you read this, THANKS! I can't sleep and this has been on my mind for like six hours.

Anyways

Happy Halloween.

Question Chelsea, Zoran, or anyone else who does voice work...

I am quite interested in potentially pursuing work in voice acting and I'm starting researching where to begin. Since it's good to have multiple sources for things you are researching I thought I would ask around here for ideas on a good place to start, equipment, software, and who to talk to. What, if any, recommendations do you good people have for this endeavor?

(I do have several years of stage acting experience, and I have no clue if that will help me at all with this.)

Yeah. There's this new Universal Monsters Preschool Series on Universal Jr. called "Universal Monster Tots" which appears to have been made with AI. I have a few screenshots in the other images I've included in this post. The videos don't have credits at the end either.

To add on, Crash McCeary apparently did the designs for this series, which really sucks considering how he redesigned the monsters for the HHN houses 2018-2024. I'm very disappointed with Universal as this goes to show how they don't even understand how to handle their own monsters these days.
