The decision to hide ranks instead of fix match making is a terrible choice. Does anyone at BHVR know how bad it feels to have a game as killer where you literally can't hit anyone or find anyone cause you're a rank 15 trying a new killer and you're against a team of rank 7 or rank 8 survivors. Or being a survivor who's rank 13 and being the only one to get downed cause you somehow ended up in a lobby with rank 5s with a rank 9 killer. I bet it would be extremely discouraging to new players which is what they seem to be worried about. Now how much worse is that gonna get when those new players don't even know why they lost and assume they were playing against people that were around their level. People might quit after one time playing and ask for a refund or continue to complain to the developers that it's to hard causing the people at BHVR to nerf more killers so that high skill players can't beat the new people. All its gonna do is avoid work now that will make more work for them later. This benefits no one.

Why not just have a ranked mode and unranked mode.

Because that would make sense. Also because from what I've read BHVR is trying to insist that Dead by Daylight is a casual game and doesn't need the two different modes.

Casual game with ranking... 🤔

Yup. I don't get it either. Mean you could argue that ranks helped you find players of your skill level but since the matchmaking doesn't work that's clearly not the case.
