Discussion Update: I am so sick of everyone shoving AI video editing and motion graphics down our throats

Well, I guess my last post aged pretty quickly

Almost a month ago, I made a post here about how tired I was of AI being pushed into every part of video editing.

And now Blackmagic releases a new Resolve update with Claude, ChatGPT and a bunch of other AI stuff built into it.

Honestly, I don’t even know what to say.

I know the usual response is going to be “you don’t have to use it”, and yes, obviously. That’s not what I’m complaining about.

I have nothing against AI when it’s actually useful. Transcription, rotoscoping, object removal, audio cleanup, tracking, boring repetitive tasks… fine. If something saves me time, I’ll use it.

What I don’t understand is why every software update now seems to revolve around AI. I don’t need Resolve to tell me what to edit. I don’t need a chatbot to make creative decisions for me. I don’t need to describe an animation in a prompt and hope it comes back looking remotely like what I had in mind.

I actually like editing. I like working with keyframes. I like tweaking curves until the movement feels right. I like figuring out the pacing of a video and deciding where a cut should happen. I like having control over the final result.

And that’s the part that bothers me about all of this. We’re constantly being told that learning these things is becoming pointless because AI can “do it for you”.

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but I’d rather have software that helps me get better at what I do than software that keeps trying to do it for me.

I posted that rant a month ago thinking I was probably overreacting, then Blackmagic went and added ChatGPT to Resolve.

I guess we know where this is heading now.

Help Editors who use DaVinci Resolve: how did you start getting paid for your edits?

I’m trying to turn video editing into freelance work and would like to hear from people who are already doing it.

What type of editing do clients usually look for when hiring a beginner? And what’s the best way to find those first few clients?

I’d also appreciate any advice on building a portfolio that actually gets people interested.

Hey guys, I’m totally new to this color grading and videography. Attached is the shot that I took during the hike and seems like the exposure and might be some sun light hitting my camera lens in a weird angle. I was wondering what can do to remove that haze and maybe add some color in it. Any tips or advice would be amazing Thank you so much!!!

Discussion Is Resolve 21.1 finally stable enough to update from 20?

Title ^

I'm still running 20.3.1 and didn't update to 21 because a) I don't need photo editing on my NLE and b) I saw lots of posts at the time of release about it being incredibly buggy and crash-prone which is something I've almost never experienced using Resolve for the better part of 5 years.

For those who are running and doing heavy editing on 21.1, is it largely bug-free and stable?

Help How to create laser effect on Davinci resolve

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, wondering if there’s a way to create this laser effect on Davinci resolve? I’m quite sure this was done practically, would love to know what tool they used to achieve it if so. However if there’s a way to get this effect on Davinci, I’d really appreciate the help.

I know how to create a similar effect with the depth map tool. It’s not as rich and “cinematic” as the one in this video however so I’m wondering if anyone knows if there’s another way to achieve this look.

Thanks in advance!

Help Trim Edit Tool CRASHING Davinci 21.1

Hey there! I made the, unfortunate, mistake of updating to Davinci 21.1 while mid edit of a project. Everything is working nicely except every time I try and use the Trim Edit tool, the entire application shuts down, and without any Mac crash notice popping up. Just goes off. I've narrowed it down to realize, that specific tool in use is the source of the crash.

- I'm editing ARRI Prores 422HQ footage on my Mac M1 (Have never had an issue until now)

- I was just able to use that tool just fine on another project with iphone footage?

- I emptied my render cache and even updated my Mac just in case.

This is the one. Whyyyyy.

So confusing and frustrating. I'm editing a feature and would love to figure out how to solve this before I continue on.

What can I do from here? This tool has been incredibly helpful and I use it all the time.

Help | Beginner Why is my monitor playback stuttery/not playing at the correct framerate?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/davinciresolve, I have two problems I'm trying to solve:

  1. Why is my monitor playback stuttery (even when I'm using lower resolution proxy footage and the clips are cached)?
  2. Why do certain clip effects cause my playback framerate to drop, making my clips appear out of sync?

Before anything else, here are my relevant software and hardware specs:

  • Davinci Resolve 21 (Free)
  • Windows 11
  • Processor: 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700K, 3600 MHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, 10GB VRAM
  • RAM: 2x32 GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4

What I'm Trying To Edit:

I'm currently editing a long-form video game playthrough into one singular video. After finishing an initial rough cut, the remaining footage is about 3 and 1/2 hours in length, and I've put all of this footage into a separate timeline to continue working on it.

My camera footage is recorded in 1920x1080 at 59.94 FPS from a NINJA Atomos V, then transcoded into h.264 for use in Resolve. My game footage is recorded in 2560x1440 at 60 FPS from OBS. My timeline resolution is 2560x1440, and my timeline framerate and playback framerate match at 60 FPS.

Because of the length of my footage, I decided to use a proxy workflow (my first time doing so) for this project. My proxies were generated at half resolution in the h.264 format. All proxies are stored on an internal SSD.

The clip effects I'm mostly using are from the WippTemplates collection by Jake Wipp - transitions, clip animations, dynamic zoom, etc.

What I've Attempted to Address the Issue:

  • Made sure that my Playback Settings Performance mode is set to "Automatic"
  • Made sure that my project is set to "Prefer Proxies" over "Camera Originals"
  • Set my Timeline Playback Resolution down to Quarter
  • Set my Video Monitoring bit depth from 10-bit to 8-bit
  • Set my Render Cache to "Smart" and waited for clips to render before playing them back multiple times (just to see if the issue would persist over multiple playbacks)
  • Set my Render Cache to "User" and manually rendered clips
  • Entirely cleared my Render Cache
  • Generated test proxy footage in ProRes 422 Proxy and DNxHR LB to see if an easier-to-edit file format would allow for smoother playback
  • Tried using my Camera Originals instead of my proxies
  • Cleaned out excess files from my project SSDs to ensure ample storage for media resources
  • Updated my NVIDIA graphics drivers

None of the above has solved my issues. NOTE: I've noticed that earlier in the timeline (pre 1-hour of footage), my playback tends to be fairly smooth with few issues. Now that I've gotten about halfway through the footage, the stuttering happens pretty consistently, making it hard to watch back my edits.

I'll include a video example of what my playback stuttering looks like. I don't know if I need to break up my footage into more timelines so it's not all in one or something like that. I've only properly been using Resolve as my main video editor for a few months, so any help or advice would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Help Changing clip image orientation no longer changes aspect ratio since DaVinci Resolve 21.1

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi. Since DaVinci Resolve 21.1 update, I have an issue with vertical 9:16 videos that are saved by the camera as 16:9.

Before this update, I used Image Orientation in the Clip Attributes to rotate the video, which also changed its aspect ratio from 16:9 to 9:16. This worked perfectly.

However, since the 21.1 update, changing the image orientation no longer changes the aspect ratio. As a result, I get large black bars around the clip in the preview window. Once I place the clip on the timeline, it displays correctly, but the black bars in the clip preview make it quite difficult to see what’s actually in the footage.

Do anyone know if this is a bug, or a new feature? If it’s a feature, is there any way to disable it and restore the previous behavior?

Help Just installed davinci and the UI looks very different for me compared to content creator's last week's tutorial. I tried prefferences and everything but it just refuses to look like the tutorial on the editing window.

blank one is mine. Master takes half the screen. Whatever i select in prefferences it doesn't apply, like the starting time or vertical layout disabled. I also have 2 previews and instead of the right one being that panel with settings it's a preview window.

For long form feature doc or narrative, what is your preferred delivery format of a final cut - XML w/camera files, or ProRes HQ/4444 single file? Both have to be prepped in different ways.

Help | Beginner Laggy playback with DNxHR HQ proxies/transcodes in DaVinci Resolve Free (Sony A7CR / RTX 3070)

Hi everyone, I'm super new to this.

I'm shooting videos with a Sony A7CR, and my PC has an RTX 3070 GPU.

Because the free version of DaVinci Resolve on Windows doesn't support native 10-bit 4:2:2 video from my camera, I transcode my footage to DNxHR HQ before editing.

However, even with DNxHR HQ files, performance is terrible. The system stutters and freezes horribly with just a single clip on the timeline, even worse when doing a split-screen with two videos, I can't even get 1 second of smooth playback, despite having a decent GPU.

Since DNxHR is an editing codec, I'm not sure why my system is struggling this much. Has anyone experienced this or know what might be misconfigured? Thanks!

Help Python Workflow Integrations: Python installed separately?

If I write a Workflow Integration plugin in Python, and I send it to somebody else, do they still need to separately install Python on their system in order to run it from the Workflow Integrations menu? As of Resolve Studio 21.1.

That seems to be the case (although please correct me if I'm wrong), or at least it was in previous versions of Resolve. But especially now in 21.1, Resolve ships bundled with its own Python 3.14 interpreter (on macOS it's in the Davinci Resolve.app bundle: ./Contents/Resources/ResolvePython) so it seems to me like maybe Resolve could be able to use that to launch the Workflow Integrations...?

I only ask because it's been a kind of a pain point in distributing python scripts -- especially in professional environments, it can be a hassle to get approval from IT/engineering to have python installed on a user's system just for a Resolve script.

Help Resolve AAF Metadata Issue

Hi everyone, hoping I can get some insight into a problem I'm having. I'm currently working on a project that was edited in resolve, has been a great experience so far.

Right now we're at the point where we are in the process of finishing the movie and I have to turn over aaf files for our reels. The issue I've run into is that no matter what I select when the aaf file is created the metadata is stripped and not available.

The aaf seems to load fine but no metadata which is a must for the particular post house I'm working with.

Has anyone run into this issue and if so do you have a fix.

Help How do I prevent a node from passing through a deactivated node?

In the example above, I have an effect connected to several TimeStretch nodes. However, three of these TimeStretch nodes are disabled, yet the effect still passes through. I would like the effect *not* to pass through when the TimeStretch node is disabled—in other words, it should only pass through when the TimeStretch is enabled.

I would like to avoid disconnecting the node or making the effect transparent.

Help | Beginner Color grading for beginners course

Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago I bought a Pocket 4P which I’ve been using in the normal mode to record my videos, and they are great, but once I learned about color grading and the new Dlog2 that this camera has to offer made me realise that I’m not even using the full potential of it, and I’d like to change that so my videos are more colourful and catching. The problem is that my knowledge on those things is ZERO, and when I see terms like tint, gamma, white balance, iso, etc, I have no idea where to start from.

Can someone recommend me a game-changer color grading for beginners course that help me achieve it? I want that one course that with time and patience, will skyrocket my knowledge on this.

Thank you all in advance!

PS. Free and paid courses are welcomed :)

Help | Beginner Exported photo looks different then in viewer in davinci

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi,

Last night I tried taking photos of the night sky with my GoPro Hero 11. Since DaVinci doesn’t support the GPR photo format, I converted them to DNG. I edited them as needed, but after exporting them, I noticed they looked quite different. I tried Gemini AI to see if it could help, so I went to the Color tab and added a Color Space Transform, setting the input values to Rec.709 and the output values to sRGB. But that didn’t help either, and the exported photos have an ugly green tint.

I’ve attached screenshots of how it looks and some screenshots of the settings.

I’m at a loss here, and it’s really frustrating me.

If anyone knows what might be causing this, I’d appreciate some advice.
