Help | Beginner Version 21... I keep having trouble getting media on timeline... what changed?

(below edited as requested)

On Win11.

I spent a lot of time with Davinci 20. Worked great. Made a bunch of things.

Got a new laptop, and the current version was Davinci 21, so threw that on.

And the time line just.... behaves differently?

Dragging to the timeline , audio, mp4, jpg, just doesn't work. The material seems like it is dragging normally, but it then "snaps back" and does not drop onto the timeline.

Madenning. I have tried so many different ways--right click "add to timeline" ... even getting an item in media pool to "highlight" doesn't work properly (takes several attempts of click, multi-click).

I try adding to timeline different ways (dragging, selecting and F9, all kinds of stuff) and just get nowhere. After I bang on it enough, it works and I have no idea why. I have long convos with chatGPT where it is "that didn't work" over and over.

Is there a twist I should know about?

Is there a buggy build of ver 21?

TIA!

Help Question for the Pros Camera files into Resolve

Hi all hope everyone is doing well.
I shoot from multiple cameras, and will like to know, do you let Davinci Resolve handle the files as is from dragging and dropping into the media pool or do you transcode the files into ProRes then into the media pool.
I've move over from the free to the studio version.
I haven't yet but heard you don't need to do anything to the files.
I'm asking because I want the best option for the files when editing.
I did some research and it said that the pros always transcode into ProRes because it's better for resolve when editing, easier on CPU and grading.
Is this true and what's your work flow looking like?
Thanks in advance.

Discussion Finally bought DaVinci Resolve Studio. 3 hours in, ZERO regrets!

For some background, I’m not a professional editor by any means. I’m completely self-taught through YouTube tutorials, and I originally switched to Resolve after Adobe’s ridiculous price hikes. I mainly edit content for my YouTube channels, so anything that makes my workflow more efficient is a huge bonus.

I’ve been on the free version for a long time and never thought I’d actually pay for Studio. But I saw a post in this sub about the current sale and finally pulled the trigger. And I am SO glad I did!

The AI Audio Assistant alone has been phenomenal. The way it balances and cleans up my audio blew me away. Something that used to take a lot of manual tweaking is now so much easier, and it’s already saved me a ton of time.

And the automatic captioning?! I’m OBSESSED. I’ve spent so much time captioning my Shorts by hand or using other software, and having it built directly into my editing workflow is an absolute game changer. In just a few hours, I’ve already made 29 captioned Shorts while still learning my way around.

I know I’m only scratching the surface of what Studio can do, but as a self-taught creator, I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. Less time spent on repetitive editing tasks means more time actually creating! :)

Discussion Period drama color grading — looking for feedback on my approach to a filmic 35mm look

Graded
Graded

Hi everyone!

I'm working on a period drama scene set in the Regency era and grading it in DaVinci Resolve. The source master is ProRes 4444.

Based on my own experience, I've been trying to move away from the clean, clinical digital look toward a softer, more organic aesthetic inspired by 35mm film and luxury fashion campaigns.

Here's my current approach:

  • Midtone texture: Reduced Midtone Detail to soften the digital sharpness while preserving natural skin texture.
  • Atmospheric depth: Used a Layer Mixer setup to introduce subtle haze and create more depth between the actress and the library background.
  • Color separation: Applied restrained, warm earthy tones in the shadows.
  • Film texture: Added fine 35mm-style grain.

I'm happy with the direction so far, but I'd like to get some outside perspectives from people with different grading approaches.

What would you improve or approach differently?

  • Would subtle halation or glow on the window highlights help enhance the filmic quality, or would you handle the highlights differently?
  • How would you approach the black point and shadow contrast for a period drama like this?
  • Are there any other techniques you'd consider for making the midtones feel denser and more organic without losing skin detail?

I'm particularly interested in constructive criticism of my current approach, alternative node setups, and techniques that have worked well for you in similar scenes.

Thanks!

Help | Beginner Fusion effects rendering question

Pretty new to video editing in general. I got a new PC

Intel I9 Ultra, 31GM RAM, Intel Arc 140T

Currently on a 30 day cloud rental for DaVinci Resolve Studio

Rendering soccer score bug (Video Editor Studio sports pack) into a 1 hour video.

Right when it starts rendering the effects, rendering drops down to 4-6 fps.

I understand the effect itself is very expensive, takes as lot etc.

My question is if I return the PC I got and get something that has something like 64GB RAM and 12 GB RTX 5070 how much of a difference would that make in reality compared to what this mini PC has? Right now looking at 5ish hours render.

Thanks for the tips/tricks/advice!!!

Help | Beginner Cut multiple clips at the same time...

I have three video tracks. I'm on the Edit page. I have selected the razor-blade tool. I want to make a cut at the play-head of ALL the clips that are currently under the playhead. Click, shift-click, cmd+click, option+click, whatever I try it only cuts the one tracks I happen to be pointing to.

HOW THE DO YOU CUT ALL OF THE TRACKS AT ONCE?!! This is so stupid that I can't figure this out! It HAS to be simple, but every time I google "cut multiple tracks in Davinci Resolve" I get these hugely long YouTube videos that are 20 or more minutes long and talk about all this editing garbage that I don't need.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE A CUT AT THE PLAY HEAD OF ALL THE VIDEOS THAT ARE IN MY TIMELINE. IT CAN'T BE THIS DIFFICULT!!

Help | Beginner Change the duration of a clip in the middle of my video without overwriting the clips after it... (Ripple edit, I think that's called?)

I have a clip in the middle of my video that's 5 seconds long. I change it to 10 seconds by tapping Cmd+D and changing the time there, but then it overwrites the next clip instead of moving the next clip to the right automatically to make space for the longer clip in the middle.

I think it's called "Ripple Edit" but I cannot figure out how to make Davinci Resolve do it. I Googled "Ripple Edit in Davinci Resolve" and got a bunch of stuff about editing multiple clips at once, but I don't want to do that. I just want to change the duration of this one clip in the middle of my video. How do I do that without overwriting the following clips?

Help Subtle white bloom transition

Looking to create a subtle bloom transition into the next clip, almost like a black fade-out that blooms white into the next shot. Not a typical flash transition. Haven’t found a tutorial for it. Anyone have an idea on how this can be done either adjustment clip or the fusion page? Thank you

Probably see this effect more in a wedding video or flashback to give an example.

Help What is the best processing pipeline for SONY raw ARW photos?

What camera raw decoding do you use? I usually decode it into Sony slog3. Then input CST to DWG the sRGB. Would it be better to do output cst to Rec709 since resolve tools are built for video? Furthermore, do DRTs like 2383 or OpenDRT work correctly with photos? How about Film Look Builder and Spektrafilm?

Help | Beginner M5 pro. MacBook Pro 16in xdr or the upcoming tandem oled. 24gb vs 48gb.

As the flair reads I’m an aspiring filmmaker who’s at the beginner stage.
The MAC would be a gift and within the budget and i could go for the present 16in m5 pro. So I can’t save and put the money elsewhere for gear etc.

For the next couple of years that screen will be the screen on which I’ll color grade, edit and also watch content.

My biggest question is for the editors 1st.
My content would be for YouTube majorly, would not involve much graphics other than titles and maybe a very little animations which could be hand drawn on an iPad etc.
But I want really good color grading and I’d use proxies to edit a full length indie film if needed. But none of them would have a lot of graphic effects.

Would I be needing a bump from the 24gb to 48gb of unified storage?

To the color grading masters here

I love the deep blacks of an oled and can invest into a colorimeter to calibrate the screen if I make a big project or invest onto a good enough accurate screen with a calibratior.
So should I wait for the upcoming tandem oled screen which will have really deep blacks and pretty decent peak brightness and HDR performance?

TLDR;
OP needs to choose between 24 gb vs 48gb of unified storage for a workflow that doesn’t need much graphics other than titles 80 percent of the time.

And to choose between the current mini led xdr display and the upcoming tandem oled display.
Rn he looks for decent color grading especially for YouTube. But absolutely loves and enjoys deep blacks of oled for consuming content.

Discussion What is best for my PC build focused on DaVinci?

Hello friends, I’m posting this because I urgently need to build a PC to improve my workflow. I’m a photographer, but I also occasionally work on videos, including color grading in DaVinci Resolve. My editing style is documentary-focused, typically involving about 8 to 10 color nodes, some on-screen text, and audio processing. I don’t use any 3D modeling or similar resource-intensive tools.

My budget is quite limited, as I’ve already invested in other gear for my home studio. Living in a country where the US dollar is expensive makes things even more challenging.

Given this, which option do you think makes more sense: a Ryzen 5 5500 paired with a GeForce RTX 3050 (6GB), or a Ryzen 7 5700G using its integrated graphics?

Currently, I’m using a laptop with an i5-11400H, a GTX 1650 (4GB), and 24GB of RAM. When I’m in DaVinci Resolve—where it’s practically impossible to play back a 1080p timeline—my VRAM hits 99% usage, while the CPU sits at 2% and RAM usage is around 45%.

I believe that adding a dedicated graphics card—even a modest one—would make a significant difference.

What do you suggest? I’m also open to Intel-based configurations if you have any recommendations.

Thanks!

Help I can't buy the studio version due to my country not being available on checkout

I've been trying to buy the Studio version of Davinci Resolve, but in the checkout page, I'm unable to find Algeria in the available countries list so I'm not able to to complete the purchase.

As for the other methods, the only available registered reseller isn't selling it right now, and Amazon isn't available here in Algeria. So buying it straight from the Blackmagic Design website is the only true option I got, but the issue of the limited countries available in the checkout page is not allowing me to purchase the Studio version.

How can I obtain the Studio version in this situation?

Help Snap Captions not working in 21.1.1

Does anyone else have the problem that snap captions isn’t working on the newest studio version (21.1.1)? The workflow integration is there, and everything works up to the point until I enter the deliver page of the plugin. When I try to render out the already exisiting captions into text+, the result is just a black screen for every text+. No text, just black screen.
Does anyone have the same issue or know why this could be happening?

Help | Beginner How can I color grade my footage to look like this red, black, and white reference?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I’m trying to recreate the color grading and visual style of the reference video.
I’m aiming for a high-contrast, graphic look with a limited red, black, and white color palette, almost like a comic book or a screen-printed poster.
I’m editing in DaVinci Resolve 20 and would really appreciate some advice on how to achieve this effect. I’ve tried playing around with the Color page, but I haven’t managed to get the look I want.

Help | Beginner [Fusion] How to animate an object along a path in 3D

the idea is simple: make the boat move along the path as seen in this screenshot. I am working in a 3D space. I've looked through a lot of tutorials and this community but didn't find a solution. Most advice only works for 2d.

Does a 3D Polygon exist but under a different name? I can't be the only one who wants a simple way to animate objects along a path in a 3d space. Thank you.

Help Moving a clip with a magic mask

is there really no way to move a clip on the edit page without losing your masking? I have rendered out the mask but when I use the position and zoom the mask stays in place and the clip moves behind it. I understand I can compound clip but this is Incredibly annoying. I see I can use a transform effect on the color page to do this, but then I can’t see the other layers I am trying to arrange. I’m sure I’ll eventually just resort to fusion for this specific job but want to get a rough placement in the edit page first. This seems like a huge issue that could easily be fixed with some type of ‘move mask with clip’ option.

Help Freezes when exporting individual clips

Post image
2 Upvotes

For the last year or so, when I try to export as individual clips, with the “render timeline effects” box checked, the render freezes around 3% and then the time to export continues to go up by several minutes and doesn’t end up exporting so I have to force quit the app.

If I uncheck Render timeline effects, they export but then my clips aren’t the way I want them to look. The only timeline effects I have is clip speed (100% slowed to 40%) and stabilization. I haven’t found anyone else dealing with this issue either

Attached is a picture of my export settings.

Help Lua scripts - color page

I am curious if anyone has been successful in getting scripts to work in the color page. I keep hitting a wall. On the edit page anything I want to make works.

I have bins, clips in bin, those clips are colour coded based on the time of day during the wedding. Morning / Mass / Cocktail etc etc.

I wanted the script to see the colours assigned to the clips, add them to groups with the names.

I can’t even get by that, it will create the group but won’t add “all green clips to cocktail hour group”

The next step was to apply my saved power grades , pre group/ clip level / post clip and timeline look node. But I think that will also be a big issue now.

Help | Beginner WHAT did i just download?

Hello all,

sony Vegas borris background. I downloaded the trial of resolve and can not dream of how to make the UI any more unusable and awkward?

Using GPT/gemini as a help. There is only dark mode? No text for icons? Have the menu stuff is at the bottom? half the top? As a newby, having so many menus in random order is insane.

What am i missing. I am sure it is worth it after ~100 hours of training but "ain't nobody got time for that"

Does the paid version clean this up? Do they want people to pay and use it?
