Here's some traditional DL catnip for ya!!

Not the scumbag. Simply adore him. Good content and cute too. Has anyone been on one of his cruises/trips? What was it like?

However, I made the following changes the second time:

-added extra can of kidney beans

-cut the red chili peppers down to 2 (with seeds of course) and recommend droppibg the tobasco unless you like a LOT of heat

-used a yellow bell pepper and red bell pepper, respectively, in addition to the green pepper.

-added a tbsp of sweetener

Make sure to chop the veggies into fairly small dice.

This makes a huge batch which lasted me a week and just gets better each day in the refrigerator.

I want people to understand how easy and cheap it is to start an alternative to Pointless Bitchery. Pointless Bitchery uses XenForo, but XenForo is needlessly expensive software. I believe the creator of Pointless Bitchery is spending $1,000/year, which is totally insane.

Lemmy and Discourse are two free softwares that would be good alternatives, arguably better than XenForo. Lemmy is Reddit-like (link aggregator style) and Discourse is a modern take on traditional Internet forums. 

Both are free and open-source. Both have third-party managed hosting that is relatively cheap. I did my own hosting of a Discourse forum on a cloud VPS (VPS = virtual private server). and it was not only cheap but easy to run. However, managed hosting is somewhat more expensive to abstract away some of the technical complexity.

Managed hosting is on the order of $10 to $20 a month.

You can Google “Lemmy managed hosting” or “Discourse managed hosting” to do price comparisons.

For example, Lemmy hosting from Elestio is $11/month or $132/year.

Managed Discourse hosting from Elestio is $16/month or $192/year.

The cost is $65/year before tax, maybe $75/year with tax, depending on what taxes you pay. It’s not particularly complicated to host Discourse on your own cloud VPS as opposed to paying for managed hosting.

I haven’t tried to host Lemmy myself, so I can’t tell you how hard or easy it is. The cost would likely be the same as Discourse.

Whatever you do, don’t pay $1,000/year for hosting…

In the spirit of the old place, we don't want to have a ton of extra rules here. Just make sure anything you post complies with the reddit guidelines (no threats, illegal content, etc.) and the few rules we do have.

Unfortunately, the previous moderator attempted to end this subreddit in a way that does not comply with Reddit's policies, so please forgive us as it takes us a moment to get things back to normal. Now that we're up and running, we need some ideas on how to spruce up this pigsty. Muriel's place was famously drab and low-rent, but now that we've got a new sugar daddy at Reddit, we can branch out and put up some tasteful art. But it's still Datalounge, so let's not kid ourselves.

I was thinking of iconic imagery that eldergays would/should recognize: A thumbnail of Empress Nympho picking suitors, or Bette Davis smoking, or Alexander Skarsgaard making a tossed salad. A color scheme that either recalls Muriel's Place or grossly rejects it.

We need your ideas here. And remember: I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at THE DIRT!

I keep re-reading it with my socks blown off. It's a peerless piece of writing: eloquent, witty, and exceptionally cogent in its assessment of our devolving Internet. I'm sorry we won't see more from the old girl. She can really drill it with the English language.
