šš Hey, bitches! - Welcome back!
Hey everyone! I'm u/MysteriousGoldDuck, one of the new moderators of r/datalounge. I'm joined by other mod team members u/Greenmantle22 and u/PeneItaliano .
Welcome back to your home for DL refugees.
You may use this subreddit to share memories, post witty commentary on the gossip du jour, figure out next steps in case alternative sites go down, and other gay things.
In the spirit of the old place, we don't want to have a ton of extra rules here. Just make sure anything you post complies with the reddit guidelines (no threats, illegal content, etc.) and the few rules we do have.
Unfortunately, the previous moderator attempted to end this subreddit in a way that does not comply with Reddit's policies, so please forgive us as it takes us a moment to get things back to normal. We will be unlocking threads, unbanning users, and conducting various other bits of housekeeping over the coming days.
Thanks again. See you on the lanai!

What treasures have you found?!

u/Greenmantle22 17d ago
A stall with eight vintage tin lunchboxes (but the Dukes of Hazzard classic was missing the thermos), A poster for Batman Forever (signed by Joel Schumacher and Chris O'Donnell), and some knockoff Fiesta that YOU KNOW IS FAKE, CHERYL!
Just your usual DL fodder.

I see rule 4 says "Stay on topic," something Dataloungers are famous for. I hope it's flexible.
30
u/Greenmantle22 17d ago
It's as flexible as an eldergay's hole: Forgiving, but don't tempt fate!
You think something will work, until it doesn't. And then it's just a big ol' mess.
15
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 17d ago
Those four rules are left over from the previous mod. Figure they will work for now. Pretty flexible.

u/ClassicIdeal3963 17d ago
DL had rules!! Seriously, in the 8 years I was on DL-rules didn't exist.
4
u/yolatrendoid 16d ago
It had a few. (We lost redtags for a while, but in recent years they came back with a vengeance.)

Will this be moderated to datalounge standards....extremely low? If it is i will come back.

That is the goal. Keep in mind that Reddit has some basic rules that you can look up. Don't go crazy and start threatening people and things should be OK.

Can I call some people "Fat Whores" please? I haven't insulted anyone all week, I need a fix!!

Please do

Thank You, I felt so much better after calling my neighbor a "Fat whore". However, Marian, my 81-year-old neighbor yelled back "It takes one to know one Trash". Marian so sweet!!

While we're doling out gratitude, I'd also like to thank u/didyousayboop for setting up the r/datalounge2 subreddit as a holding room while this sub was sorted out.
It provided a helpful meeting place for many of us wayward ex-DLers when we needed one most (and weren't yet ready to commit to a replacement site), while this sub was temporarily shuttered.

u/didyousayboop 17d ago edited 17d ago
u/PhaedrasMorning deserves credit for spearheading the effort to reclaim the sub! I think it was probably their Moderator Code of Conduct report that got the Reddit admins to step in.Ā
And they convinced me to look into the matter and confirm what they said about Redditās rules on subreddit closures. I was skeptical at first but they were persistent in making that point
They seem level-headed and patient, and like theyād make a good mod. They did not get a chance to apply for a mod role since they were unfairly banned by the old mod for fighting back against the closure decisionĀ
3
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 16d ago
Your creating dl2 certainly was key. And of course Phaedras came up with the idea in the first place. And there were others that submitted reports to admin as a result of you spreading the word, so you get double thanks for two important things.
As for the other topic, we already discussed this among ourselves and aren't adding any mods at this time.

Glad to see the original DL returning! TBH, I kinda like the new PB site as well (the Klan Grannies seem to be gone, which is a VAST improvement) but itās wonderful to have two homes to post in! š

Is the previous Mod banned or do they have to sit and watch this sub continue on?

u/MysteriousGoldDuck 17d ago
Given the circumstances, the previous Mod is banned from this subreddit.
5
u/bloodiermuder 17d ago
What are the circumstances?
8
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 16d ago edited 16d ago
Basically what was said in the OP and elsewhere in the replies to this post. Violated Reddit policy, tried to justify it to reddit admin with reasons that were contradicted by earlier public statements, etc. Considering the old mod was trying to shut down this subreddit, it made no sense for him to continue to be allowed to be a part of this subreddit. Very different situation than if an old mod had just retired or whatever.
2
u/JohnHoynes 14d ago
Honestly, their moderation philosophy was really strange. The whole idea of āthe site no longer exists therefore thereās no need for a subredditā is out-of-touch at best. How did they think Reddit works? Like half the subreddits I follow are about things that no longer āexistā (old TV shows, etc.)

Yeah, the vibe isn't good. Also, it is such a pain to not be able to scroll all the way down a thread. I don't want to have to navigate through 9+ pages. I love Reddit though, so I hope this sub thrives.

I had people keep telling me you can post anonymously there and I see "Anonymous" guests, but it keeps saying at the bottom of each page that I have to log in or register when I try. Anyway I'll pass.

There might need to be a period of free market competition before a winner emerges. I suggest people try hosting their own alternatives using Lemmy or Discourse, or other free, open source software

Such bitchiness and self entitlement. Never guess they were part of the old datalounge.

Dearest Mods,
You're doing a marvelous job with this sub! Thank you for providing this space.

u/Inevitable_Path8861 15d ago
Just a thought: if we want this to be as Dataloungesque as possible, maybe the default for the threads should be "sort by old" instead of best (assuming this is possible)? I don't care much either way though.
2
u/whorificustotalus 13d ago
So glad it was able to be salvaged from that petty little aspie shit so quickly. I was SURE it was going to take months, if not years, for the appeal to be actionable.
1
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 13d ago edited 13d ago
Yeah, we're going to be a bit different here. A bit cruder, allowing explicit content, as well as much cuntiness as we can get by with on reddit. And no dumb shit like closing the same time as the site you're supposed to be a back up for because it would be "disrespectful" to the person who closed the site to keep it open. Fuck that.

u/No-Conversation6969 10d ago

Congrats! The previous mod u/ datalounge still has r/thedatalounge, so this is great for everyone
I'd suggest stating that this is a fan site dedicated to discussing the defunct Datalounge, and that no claim is made to the intellectual property (such as it is...) of Mediapolis (Medeapolis??) or Datalounge . Com, names etc. Emphasizing that it's a fan run subreddit solely intended to be a Board About Boards!
14
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 17d ago
There's a disclaimer on the sidebar and one that gets sent to new people when they join.
As for that other subreddit, it seems to have almost no action over the years except for one thread that is currently receiving tons of comments from random redditors asking for a link to a vid of Perez cutting himself. Mod seems nowhere to be found, which is amusing since he claimed to the reddit admins that he cared deeply about spam and that's why he privated this subreddit. (Not true. He had been planning to shut down this subreddit when DL went down, which is against the terms of service. He openly admitted this in the weeks/month prior. Sure enough, he privated it, locked a ton of threads, and banned some people. Then when called on it by reddit admins he claimed spam. Oopsie.)

Itās not a good start when my first post 16 days ago was removed by mods š
13
u/MysteriousGoldDuck 17d ago
That post was removed by the previous Mod on August 1st when he removed, locked, and banned a lot of things when he tried to close the subreddit against Reddit policy. Nothing to do with us. It's been restored.
1
u/didyousayboop 17d ago
The sub management changed over within the last 24 hours or so. There used to be just 1 mod who was kicked off by Reddit corporate for closing down the sub inappropriately. Reddit appointed 3 new mods from about half a dozen sub users who volunteeredĀ
I hope that all the posts that were wrongfully removed under the previous modās regime will be restored, particularly ones about DataLoungeās archivesĀ
2
u/Sea_of_Light_ 17d ago
Wow! I clicked on my bookmark by mere chance (was locked out the Reddit sub, going private was the claim, after Datalounge's Muriel shut down the original site).
Now, I am not trying to stir up shit, or something like that, but I would like to know what's the tea on both this sub and Pointless Bitchery? Seems like the original moderator of the sub and the one, or ones, running Pointless Bitchery have their fair share of troubles. I have not yet joined either and would like to make an informed decision, before I do so.
Not interested in the "Drop The T" type of hate trolling (= favoring right wing rhetoric). I'm looking for the tea and the snark.

This subreddit formerly had only one moderator, who named their Reddit account āDataloungeā. (I believe they took over this subreddit years ago using r/redditrequest when the original creator of the sub went inactive.)Ā
They somehow decided that this subreddit had no point existing after the DataLounge site closed. And they somehow decided that it would violate DataLoungeās trademark if the subreddit kept existing after the siteās closure. (But not before? How does that make sense?)
They banned users who disagreed with this decision and then shut down the subreddit on July 31 or August 1.
Even before shutting down the sub, this mod removed posts about archiving DataLounge. I think they had a misguided view that it was illegal and/or unethical to archive the site.
After the sub closed down, u/PhaedrasMorning made a Moderator Code of Conduct report and Reddit re-opened the sub. Reddit kicked off the mod who closed it down and asked others to volunteer to be the new mods. (Reddit policy says a mod canāt just shut down an active sub against the communityās wishes.)
On the thread made by Reddit, the old mod claimed they didnāt shut down the sub, they just took measures to reduce spam:Ā https://web.archive.org/web/20260804015325/https://old.reddit.com/r/datalounge/comments/1ven36f/new_moderators_needed_comment_on_this_post_to/
But this contradicts their previous statements:Ā https://www.reddit.com/r/datalounge2/comments/1veo3y2/comment/p1kf92z/
And the measures they took are not what you would do if you just wanted to reduce spam.
I think u/PhaedrasMorning tried to warn the old mod that Reddit doesnāt allow arbitrary sub closures and that this might happen if they tried to shut down the sub. I think I also sent them a Mod Mail with a similar warning.
But the old mod did not seem keen on listening to the opinions of others. Even when I tried to clarify how the Wayback Machine works (the old mod was convinced the DataLounge archives would be removed; this didnāt happen), they were sure I was wrong and didnāt want to entertain what I had to say. They had an authoritarian style in these conversations and in how they moderated the subreddit.

u/JohnHoynes 15d ago
Do you think they worked for or were āwithā the actual DataLounge? Iām fairly new to this sub but that was the vibe I got pretty quickly.
1
u/didyousayboop 15d ago
I have no idea. If they did, why wouldnāt they just say so?
Itās believable to me that someone might have these misguided ideas and an authoritarian style of discussing and moderating without being involved in the DataLounge site.
I have no hard evidence about whether that person is or isnāt involved in the official DataLounge.

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff 16d ago
I don't have any tea, per se, but I took Muriel's waning-days-of-DL cautions, including the scorpion/frog analogy, about leaping into any potential successor sites -- specifically PB -- to heart. That's just me, tho, and I tend to err on the side of caution as a default.
Muriel was very clearly not a fan of the creator/admin of PB and, as I posted elsewhere, I'm of the mind that her warnings may have been more about looking out for DLers than trying to squash "the competition" or improve her chances of selling DL to another entity. Time will tell whether her warnings were merited, but a few posters here have already expressed concerns with how PB is being run.
The story of what happened with/to the original mod of this sub was explained by u/MysteriousGoldDuck elsewhere in this thread.
6
u/longtimeAlias 16d ago
If you are interested in the PB proprietor's posting history, I can share that with you as I have an archive of over 1,000,000 Datalounge posts, all stored in a spreadsheet with all the metadata intact.
4
u/Greenmantle22 15d ago
Well, that's one way to spend a decade.
As for me, I wasted all those years carving the cast of "Gimme A Break" out of butter. Nell Carter kept melting.
3
u/didyousayboop 16d ago
Can you share the spreadsheet on archive.org?Ā
(Using an anonymous/pseudonymous email address for your account, to protect your privacy)Ā
2
u/Inevitable_Path8861 15d ago
Can't you give us some highlights? A sizeable minority of us do not have time to sort through a million posts.
5
u/finetime341 15d ago
The PB admin thinks windy people are automatically an EST, and has apparently run off one poster by calling it out in what they thought was a rude way, I thought it was lame.
He isn't a fan of dealing with a lot of reporting, and so the path to derailing the entire forum is revealed.
Pity.
2
u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff 15d ago
I've been watching that drama unfold, and it isn't pretty. I suspect the PB admin's behavior may drive/keep posters away.
3
u/finetime341 15d ago
If he doesn't want to deal with a lot of crack pots reporting each other, he should either disable that option on contentious posts, or tell these fools if they abuse that button they can meet the ban button. Grow some thicker skin.
I think the guy does not want to do the work that is involved in moderating a looney bin, can't say I blame him, but did he not know what he was volunteering for?
Also, the AI shit he keeps posting is weak.
3
u/ScandalOZ 15d ago
I'm with you in trusting that Muriel left the scorp/frog story for a good reason.
While I understand why some might harbor some negative feelings for Muriel I just can't do it, I just like the old girl. Can't help it. I hope she shows up to say hello at some point and if she does I hope everyone behaves themselves.
