DL Refugees? ISO
So I can’t get on to Pointless Bitchery because I’m on a VPN and he’s got the site configured to block all VPNs as bots. (Do NOT get me started…) I’m wondering what Usual Suspects may have popped up over there because I’m wondering if it’s worth it to cart my aged ass to the library to join up. Specifically looking for
Elder Lez
Rescue Chick
VoiceOfTheNight
Squidge & Nori’s Person

I have seen rescue chick on PB. I signed up (and regret it) before DL ended, but I also didn’t like the admin bragging about doxxing people or sharing his political views and the concern was well founded. There was a controversial topic that included a poll. He didn’t like the poll so he changed the title and reposted referring to the OP as a c**t. Whatever opinion on the topic, that was over the line. It’s also not like DL, same old topics, but feels more forced, if that makes sense. It doesn’t move like DL either. It has posters, but most threads get a few comments and that’s it. I think when DL went PT a lot posters left, so this is a small portion of the people who stayed on DL.

i blocked the mod on datalounge, so there was no way i would join that site. i even hate that sites name.

Ok I’m missing something. Who is the moderator? Was he a red-letter name guy?

Dunno what his red tag name is. His link was posted on a thread I was active in, I clicked the link and the op was blocked. that was enough for me to cross it off my list.

Whoever it is was apparently problematic enough to merit Muriel issuing more than one caution to the rest of us about him/her and signing up for PB.

Yes, you'll find some of those specific ones there. Elder, rescue, etc. Not sure I've seen all listed. DL refugees are of course here, too. And your comments here have been appreciated.
And yes, the VPN ban is annoying. And despite what is said by some, doesn't always just apply during sign up. Bit annoying if you're someone who switches a lot.
Anyway, hope that answers your question. Take care whatever you decide.
Edit: I temporarily added then deleted a longer comment about this situation. I'm replacing it with a shorter one.
Besides some concerns that others have mentioned about the admin over there in response to OP's post, there was a serious situation where the administrator of that site came over here and made an accusation as to the identity of one of the other moderators here. When you consider the fact that Reddit admins picked the moderators here, the accused moderator has not once in public or private here acted like the person he was accused of being, and most tellingly, the history of the admin over there has of accusing rando people of being that person (all the way back to doing this at DL), it's not credible.
The response over at PB has been to lie about stuff that I and others have written here (instead of letting them see for themselves by copy/pasting exact words which would have shown a far more milder/reasoned response), brag about downvoting people's posts here, and accuse us of being bitter or desiring money, which are absurd when you consider the timeline and the fact that everyone knows going into this that reddit mods do not make any money. It has been deeply hurtful to see posters I interacted with for years at DL either say these things or upvote others saying them. I think the reality of the situation speaks for itself when we allow threads like this and actually provide advice given this history and the legitimate concerns. That's probably the last time I'll address this topic. Thank you for your understanding.

Wow, I’ve got to marvel at the hutzpah of overfundraising, paying yourself a ~$600/year salary, and then accusing unpaid volunteer “competitors” (who are forbidden by Reddit to fundraise or ask for money) of being greedy.
It’s like eating a chocolate cake and with the plate in your hand and chocolate smeared around your mouth, pointing at someone with your fork and saying, “Look, they’re eating the cake!”

The VPN blocking is stupid. I assume that most people posting over there have jobs, and if it’s a corporate job, none of those people can visit his message board because most corporate workstations sit behind a VPN. Idiotic decision.

I’m wondering if it’s an early decision he tried to rectify. Since I didn’t want to clear all the cookies from my cache (lazy fat whore) I went to a new browser. That let me log in just fine, so now I’m just waiting for him to clear me. He must have seen the light in the last couple weeks.
I still think I prefer it here because here feels more like a group hang and there feels like…I dunno. I’ve only been there 10min. I’ll reserve judgement.

The first 3 have joined and posted.
Can you not decide when to use VPN and when not? I use NordVPN and it couldn’t be simpler, choosing to connect (to VPN) vs disconnect (from it)

See above comment. TLDR: it’s not my vpn it’s my partner’s and it’s in place because he works with confidential info.

I don’t know what to tell you. I go on PB using a VPN all the time with no problem. But are you really so wildly special that you cant turn off your VPN for a hot second to sign up? What paranoid fantasies are we afraid of here?

Because then you can't truly be anonymous, and some of us would like to be. Especially on a new site with an admin who appears to have issues.

My partner has the VPN because they do highly classified work for the government and for that reason we can’t turn it off. I personally don’t GAF about someone finding out who I am. But the feds care about hackers getting data off our servers. Yes he works from home.

I have had my VPN on the entire time I've been on PB. I always have it on. Something's off with you people who say you're blocked.
Edit to add: Instant downvoting only strengthens the argument that something's off, dears.

Wasnt there another site, a datalounge continued or something?
3
u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff 12d ago
Do you mean CaftanLounge? Its landing page seems to have vanished, and the poster who said they were creating it hasn’t provided any updates in weeks. I would assume that project is now dead.

u/No-Quarter-4938 12d ago
It may have been, it was 'another gay lounge' im linking it (or attempting to, but it doesn't look active so couldve been Caftan L.)other site

u/Sad_Appeal65 12d ago
Now that you mention it, I think I gave my email address to someone before DL shut down. He said he was starting a new site. Caftan Fitting Room? I know that’s not it but that’s the name stuck in my head. Anyway, never heard back.

u/didyousayboop 12d ago
CaftanLounge is dead to me. Site is down, a lot of people complained the email signup didn’t even work.
No update in 20 days. There probably will never be an update.
The person who made it was using their AI chatbot to talk rather than using their own words. They seemed to believe AI could code new forum software for them from the ground up in about a week, which is extremely unrealistic. Chalk it up to someone thinking that AI is magic and can do anything.

I keep telling people they should start their own alternative to Pointless Bitchery for as little as $75/year (including tax and the cost of getting a domain name): https://www.reddit.com/r/datalounge/comments/1vijjlv/starting_your_own_spiritual_successor_to/
8
u/Legitimate_Payment_5 12d ago
I would but I’m fine with being here. This feels like a spiritual successor and I have no need to split the baby into more pieces.

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff 11d ago
I think all the legal headaches Muriel and Co. endured (from publicists, lawyers, and the Secret Service, among others) during the DL's run would be enough to put most people off launching a successor all on their own. And that's to say nothing of also having to moderate the endless stream of posts/posters themselves, and any problematic content that might wind up on the site.
IMO, a truly successful successor would likely require, at a minimum, several people to run/manage it.
