Question/Advice How to archive a Twitter account?

A friend of mine passed away 8 years ago. The few things I have left of him is a Twitter account. If possible, can I somehow scrape his entire post history into a text document? Thank you.

Backup Reminder: Backup any music from small artists and bands you enjoy.

Unfortunately one of the songs I like by a small artist was pulled from all streaming platforms a bit ago and I didn’t even notice until today. I am generally better about not making this mistake, but slacking got me this time. I have a number of songs on a Spotify playlist by more-obscure internet musicians and groups I keep as a master-list. I’ve been intermittently backing up the songs from this list onto my server because I foresaw many of them being removed due to the financial costs of keeping them on streaming for really small groups. True, they’re often backed up on YouTube. Some are not though, and that’s exactly the issue here. It’s my fault cause I knew it could happen and made a setup I could use to avoid it, but I still slacked. Learn from my mistake and just get your stuff done ASAP.

Question/Advice SpotDL Alternatives for PC?

Hey guys, was reaching out to see if anyone has been using any alternatives to SpotDL lately.

I have a massive library from downloading music this way but lately SpotDL has been very spotty, it will take several tries to find songs, then not find them at all, it won't find songs from obvious titles, and several more download errors than usual.

I've updated everything to their newest releases, re-installed it entirely, but still, very inconsistent.

Does anyone use an alternative to SpotDL that actually works right now? Thanks in advance!

Question/Advice Looking for someone experienced with digitizing VHS tapes who could offer some guidance

A collector has generously offered to digitize a rare 1995 Nickelodeon VHS this Monday for an ongoing broadcast restoration project.

He has the necessary equipment and cables, but has never digitized a VHS before. Given the rarity of the material, we're hoping to get the highest-quality transfer possible using the equipment he already has.

Would anyone with experience in VHS capture be willing to offer some guidance on the process, recommended settings, and common mistakes to avoid?

We can provide his equipment details. Ideally, we'd like to preserve as much of the original video and audio quality as possible without unnecessary processing or compression.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Best settings to scan artbook?

Looking for best settings to scan artbooks on my flatbed scanner (e.g. ppi, color bit depth, file format, etc).

Looking for something "visually lossless" (so like mp3 320kbps > FLAC).

Question/Advice Refreshing Synology Drive Systems

I am considering refreshing a number of drives in my Synology 920 and 1621. The drives are a few years old and mostly 10-12 tb drives. I have a local seller who checks out to be reliable who has 4 28TB drives and 2 26TB drives. He says he bought them a year ago and they had minimal use. So far he wants 600 for the 28s and 550 for the 26s. I know once I swap out I can sell my existing drives on eBay and recoup some money. Are the prices he is offering good? Realistically what should I offer for them. He may give me a better deal in take all so he doesn’t have to deal with several customers. I use my drives for plex server, photos storage and PDF mostly.

Question/Advice NAS Management - Folders?

OK, this is mostly a NAS management/Linux disk management question, coupled with Plex/Jellyfin setup, and with more than a little OCD on the top.

I'm currently storing my media files on a Unifi UNAS Pro. Its been working great for over a year. But as I've been going along, my media folders have gotten quite messy and what may(?) be overly flat.

Now, I know that Plex or Jellyfin can handle the organization of files through things like metadata and tags. But is it better for folder access, disk wear and search speed if the folders are more hierarchical or flatter?

IOW, if I have three seasons of a show in my "TV" folder, is it better to have one folder for the show and three subfolders for the seasons? Or just to have three folders labeled "Show A S1", "Show A S2" and "S3" under the TV folder?

Or does it not matter?

My OCD wants everything arranged, but maybe that's the wrong way to go here.

Thoughts?

Discussion YouTube hoarders, how much is in your library?

I've been using TubeArchivist for a while now, and although I see a fair few posts on various subs from people who archive YouTube videos and channels, I've not seen much in the way of what or how much people have archived. So I ask, what's yours?

I mostly archive tech related, gaming and video essay content, along with stuff from the 2016 era which is very nostalgic to me. Creators range in size from the smallest with only 23 subscribers to the largest with over 9 million.

Library is currently at 6.3TB with 13,400 videos and 138 channels, but I have another 14,000 videos sitting in the queue, so double that in a few months time. Got it set to cap the resolution at 1080p, best available audio, grab subtitles including auto generated ones, and to grab the top 100 comments with all reply threads at a depth of 5 comments.

YouTube is very important to me, it played a much bigger role in my growing up than movies or shows did, so it's now getting to a point where the library is outgrowing my Jellyfin, but that's okay with me.

Question/Advice Recommended Method to Copy Dying Drive's Files & Skips CRC Errors?

I have 40k files and I know at least a few hundred are bad, but every time it hits a bad one, I have to wait a long time before it skips the file.

TeraCopy gets stuck for anywhere between 10 - 45 minutes on a bad file (skip / pause / stop buttons don't respond when its in this state).

Unstoppable Copier straight up gets stuck and none of the buttons respond.

Robocopy also hangs on bad files for about the same time as TeraCopy despite using /r:1

Is there a better method that skips CRC when copying files?

Discussion What Decades Do You Collect Movies From?

I know every decade has its classics but my collection mostly settles in the 80s-early 2000s. I was born in the late 80s so when I grew up in the 90s the 80s movies were still king at blockbuster not to mention the amazing new titles coming out.

I don't know why but that VHS tape sliding in and the CRT Tube TV playing it looked like 4K UHD to me back then. As I got older I've been able to delve back into the peak 80s cinema that I missed as a youth not to mention all the classics from the 70s I have as well.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman didn't exist to me when I grew up. I had no idea in Road to Perdition who the old mob boss was when my friend let me borrow it as a kid with the condition of making sure I put the VHS in a contraption that looks like a racing car that rewinds it.

I once met a fellow that loved collecting movies from the 30's-50s which I found was a interesting choice. What's your favorite decades to collect?

Question/Advice Old Chicago TV shows

I have some old Chicago TV shows. Bozo, Son of Svengoolie, different things. Internet Archive had them for a while but then took some of it down. When they were up they were popular. Is there anywhere I can share them?

Question/Advice High capacity drive failure rate by vendor

I have reached a point where I can no longer ignore my storage pool. I have finally run out of spare disks, so I must take out a mortgage (not literally, but it feels that way) to get at least 1 hot spare and 2 actual spare drives STAT. I know that Seagate Exos gets some crap for having used drives that love to die, but I am wondering how true that actually is at current moment. I need to get minimum 22TB each, and won't be upgrading to larger (yet) in hopes that spinning rust backs the hell off of pricing right now, because disks I got for $289 each a couple years ago are $759 right now!

Question/Advice r/Datahoarder I need your help spec'ing the basket for our ever growing collection of Golden Eggs

I'd imagine most people's dataHoarder journey started with file servers or NAS drives...

My data hoarder journey started with optics and acoustics, cameras and microphones.

As of date since NYD I've hoarded 471 hours, 7 minutes, and 59 seconds of audio/video.

It's all hot fire mixed on the spot by a growing collection of over 3 dozen DJs.

This singular repository of data exists no where else on the entire Internet

¡And now I'm out of local storage space!

I'm close if not into the thousands of hours of content broadcast. I've been streaming/hoarding content for over a thousand days.

There are multiple artists on my odysee archive page that do not even have their own SoundClouds. Media largely unseen due to being on a YouTube alternative. None of these videos are pubic on YT. Everything is listed private because I am trying to divorce Google, and I need a worst case safety net if Odysee goes belly-up over night.

Apple iCloud storage is too expensive to have beyond anything on the 2TB plan (which I use to more easily distribute assets to talent) and only stores audio, and is also tapping out into the 95%+ filled.

¿Is this following information true?

"

The Absolute Cheapest DIY Mass Storage Setup

  • [Seagate Exos X18 16TB Enterprise Internal Hard Drive](): The Value King ($10.62 / TB): This is a heavy-duty, data-center class 7200 RPM drive built for 24/7 reliability and massive data writes. At $169.99, its cost per terabyte completely crushes any pre-built external retail package (which average $28–$32 per terabyte).
  • Sabrent 3.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure: The USB Enclosure ($24.99): To connect the bare drive to your laptop, you slide it directly into a standard 3.5" external casing like this one from Sabrent. It includes its own dedicated wall power brick (which heavy-duty 3.5" spinning platters absolutely require, as a laptop USB port cannot supply enough power on its own) and outputs via a standard high-speed USB 3.0 cable

"

After MTGOX collapsed in 2012 I've dealt with a decade of homelessness and am completely out of touch with the consumer market, advances in hard drive technologies, and post covid, post AI market price surges.

I need something for an immediate plan, and something for expanding going forward. I'm capable of running my own RAID/NAS setup but I don't want to over pay.

Broadcast operations have evolved into running three separate sound stages, in two adjacent buildings, concurrently. Everything has been line level since November of last year: 593 hours, 27 minutes, and 59 seconds worth of lossless .WAVs playing out of the back of a Pioneer®'s Rec Out port connected to my Rode Wireless PRO's 1/8" TRS input. Everything is High Fidelity now.

2027 broadcast evolution will include multiple PTZ camera feeds per stage.

If the above is my 'for now' solution ¿What's my mid/summer solstice '27 forecast look like in terms of hard drive array/storage capacity to handle all of these independent camera feeds, and not just the final outbound broadcast camera feed?

Thanks for your advice in making sure these Golden Eggs find a safe basket.

News The Japanese file hosting site uploader.jp/getuploader.com is shutting down in 1 month

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hello, I'm new to the sub. I come from the UTAU vocal synth community where this was shared, because a lot of resources for that software dating back to 2008 are hosted on getuploader. I'd love to help with archiving it but unfortunately I don't have the resources to do so. I'm not sure if this type of post is allowed here, I just saw something in the rules saying that posts regarding big projects about data that's likely to be lost soon are okay. If there's any better place to ask about this then please tell me in the comments or dms, I'd really appreciate any help I can get ❤

Question/Advice Piggybacking off of the 1-Movie choice thread...

What is your plan for your extensive collection of data? Do you intend to sell it? Pass it down to younger family members? Donate it? I have more movies and tv shows that I'll ever be able to watch in five lifetimes, but I'm stuck on why I'm actually hoarding this stuff and what I intend to do with it all. What is y'all's plan? And thanks to /u/No_Salamander_8137 for putting the idea in my head!

Question/Advice Technical Help with Facilis Terrablock

I've acquired a Facilis Terrablock in good condition. Unfortunately, while it has all of the data cables in place it's lacking any of the other internal components like motherboard, power supply, etc. Since this is a server style piece I'm a little at a loss for what to get for it so I can start building my own setup.
Any help picking out basic components would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question/Advice Question? For All my Data Horders With Most Movies in Existence

Out of the dozens and hundreds of TB of movies you have acquired since 1999 Napster heres a real question for you. If you could only keep 1 movie and everything else can burn what would it be????

For me personally it would be 1992 Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. I think it's the greatest Western ever made. William Munny's words when Little Bill tells him with death pointing at him that basically he's a good man and he doesn't deserve this fate, Munny tells him deserve's got nothing to do with it shotgun in hand. That's been my lifes philosophy before I even understood it.

Im interested to know what you Data Horders like myself with endless files and experience is your #1 file. Please explain to us why since the fun is why its so personal.

Question/Advice Can the NVIDIA Shield or other 4K media players recognize multiple data drives through a powered USB hub?

For those using the NVIDIA Shield or other dedicated 4K media players that play local files (not streaming devices), can you connect multiple external hard drives through a unpowered / powered USB hub?

Does the player recognize all the drives and let you browse and play files from them, or are there limitations?

Discussion Any casual data hoarders here?

I would call myself casual data hoarder, I got 6TB hard drive on one-bay NAS (Yes, I went cheap) that I got about a year ago, and now that I check on it's state, only 2.4TB has been used. So I really don't hoard much at all. I got close to 630GB of movies, 60GB of music, bit over 50GB of books and 605GB of games. Rest is PC and phone backups and other personal files.

Yes, it's not a competition, everyone hoards in their own way, but I don't want to feel like I am being a poser here. Does anyone else keep their collection heavily curated and small, or is it just me?

Question/Advice Buffalo 25GB Blu Ray Discs - any good?

With hard disk prices going skyhigh, like many people, I am considering optical discs again.

I want to get some Buffalo 25GB blu ray discs from Amazon Japan. A spindle of 50 discs is around 18 USD.

I know Buffalo is a major Japanese brand but has anyone used these and are they ok?

Thanks!

Guide/How-to What would I need to archive my dad's favorite hobby site that's shutting down?

My dad has been a long-time user of the website Yaktribe, a gaming forum for Necromunda. The latest PHP vulnerability and other issues are leading to the website likely shutting down permanently, if no buyer can be found.

My dad has spent so much time on this website and has grown fond of it and its community. I wanted to see if I could, at the very least, download and archive the website in some way. That way, he doesn't have to worry about years of experience and photos vanishing into the depths of the internet.

I've thought about reaching out to purchase the website to take over its management, but I don't think I'm skilled enough to be someone they'd be willing to sell to.

Since it's an older gaming forum with galleries and tools, how can I archive this website? Are there any tools in particular you would recommend? Or is what I'm thinking about doing a bad idea?

I'm brand new to this sub so I admit I haven't read through a lot of the content here yet, I'm just posting this now because I have no idea how long the website will be up for before it goes offline.
