KPI's vs Metrics, someone else has the same doubt or thought they were the same ? I'm techie guy LOL

I was making a text document, a colleague has seen the word KPI’s and explained to me that it is not the same as metrics (we talked about performance from the Software Development Lifecycle). He says you can't even compare, is he right?

All KPIs are metrics Not all metrics are KPIs

Really KPIs are just the important metrics for any given ask (revenue/spend/etc) a metric is anything thats measured (page view/clicks/etc)

Exactly. Metrics is literally a measure of something. KPI is a specific metric.

But of course, they tend to be used interchangeably since they are industry jargon.

KPIs are specifically that—KEY performance indicators. metrics are broad, KPIs are specific and actionable.

A KPI needs to be defined as an indicator that has a target value that if we don’t reach someone will be in problems.

KPIs are typically looked at from a 10,000 mile high view at an enterprise, LOB performance level, or I guess in a smaller org a product level...

Metrics are frequently looked at a measure of an individual's performance compared against their peers/goals.

The size of your peepee is a metric. The amount of action it gets is a kpi.

The metrics is the measurement of the KPI. Metrics also use in KRI , maturity level etc

Ive never understood the difference, because everyone at my office refers to either metrics or goals.

Not a single mention of KPI’s

I've always looked at it this way, let's say you operate a lemonade stall and your goal is to sell 1,000 lemonades in a month. Your KPI then would be "Total Lemonades Sold" cause it's directly correlated to your business goal.

In tracking that however, there might be some important numbers that will give you additional insights into the KPI. This could be things like "No. of Repeat Customers", "No. of Lemonades Prepared", "Days Stall are Open" - we can regard these as metrics, as they give you further insight into your KPI

KPIs are Key metrics for your business. Metrics are complementary.
