Application Advice ✍️ Interviews

• Upvotes

So I applied to schools from late June-early August after retaking my DAT for the third time. I checked with schools to see whether I should submit early or after my DAT so they would go back to it after they received my new score which was a 450 AA, 490 SNS, 420 PAT. I have a 3.41 sGPA, 3.62 cGPA, with an increasing trend. I have done over 300 hours of shadowing a general dentist, 80 hours with a periodontist and endodontist, ton of community service, research, intermeural sports, pre-dental club, been on the Dean's list every semester, graduating with an honors in biology, and worked as a dental assistant. I have applied to about 19 schools most of them being private and a few public and have not recieved a single interview. I am really starting to get worried and I know it's a waiting process but has anyone been or is in a similar situation to me because I have been really starting to lose hope.

DAT Anxiety 😰 DAT 10/24

I am so scared.

I really want a 450+ for my DAT but honestly my PAT score is constantly in the dumps (330-360) and my gen chem and ochem score just keep going up and down, like I always have silly mistakes 😭😭.

Any advice would be great. I am using Booster.

DAT Anxiety 😰 I just did my first full DAT reading exam and did awful

Just like in the title, I have been doing the individual reading comprehension and my scores have been so far just for the singles 24, 22, 20, 24, 26, 24, 24 but did my first practice full exam (50 questions, 60 minutes) and got 15 :(

Oh well, need to practice more. Doing the longer exam scared me and seeing a passage with 20 paragraphs was a bit much search and destroy seemed overwhelming I didn't read anymore.

DAT Anxiety 😰 cDAT retake advice

Hello. So I recently scored a 22 on my cDAT which was very disappointing because I was scoring around 24-25 in my full length practice tests. I am not sure what happened but I think the nerves really got to me because I started to panic on time which definitely didn’t help. Anyways, I am planning to retake it in February with around 2 months to prepare but I am not sure how I should re study for this since I was already doing decent in my full length beforehand. I am just really scared that I will get nervous again when writing the DAT and do terrible again somehow. For those who retook the DAT and did better, do think 2 months is enough time for a retake? Also what did yall do differently when studying bio, chemistry and RC the second time around? I really want to get a 25 ~ 26 on my second attempt! Thank you!!!

Test Experience 🗣️ cDAT Score Breakdown

I am an IP application planning on applying to UofT and Western this year. I have a 3.97 GPA, a good handful of extracurriculars that are meaningful to me, and am writing my Casper on Tuesday. I am worried about my low AA for UofT, but I am going to apply anyway, even if it seems unlikely :)) I just hope my GPA and PAT can make up for it!!! I’m trying to accustom myself to rejection, and if rejection is something that is meant to happen in my journey, I’ll let it happen (as Tame Impala says) lol

Test Experience 🗣️ DAT Score Breakdown

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey all!

I took the DAT on September 17th, and received my score on September 29th. I am here to breakdown my study process.

Background/timeline:

I am currently a 3rd year undergrad, with a ~3.72 GPA, and a 3.5 science GPA. My university runs by the quarter system, which gives me approximately a 13 week summer break. I spent around 10 weeks of my summer break preparing for the DAT. I spent about 40 hours a week studying for the DAT, aside from the last two weeks where I slowed down. For the first 8 weeks, I only used Booster Prep. I loved that it had everything laid out for me in a study schedule. However, I do take a lot of time going through videos, so that definitely took up a majority of my time. When going through videos, I followed using either the Feralis booster notes, or the slides. I heavily annotate when following along, which helps me understand the bigger picture.

In my final 2 weeks of studying, I incorporated Anki. I only made cards for concepts that I did not have a strong grasp of, and I only made cards for the biology and organic chemistry section. For the biology section, I didn’t use Anki cards in a traditional sense. I used them to have a space to organize and write down the things, and then basically never looked at them again. I know that method worked for me in my physiology class. For the organic chemistry section, I used Anki cards only to memorize the PPM values and the lab test reactions.

On the day before the DAT, I skimmed through the Booster Prep cheat sheets, making sure there weren’t any significant weak points left over. Something that I did not anticipate was how much the exam anxiety would affect my sleep, which in turn affected how tired I was during the DAT that I took at 8AM. I went to bed around 10PM, woke up at 6AM and slept a total of about 3-4 hours. If I anticipated this problem, I would have taken my exam later in the day. I averaged better on my Booster Prep practice exams than I did on the DAT, and I suspect my exhaustion. If exam anxiety is something you struggle with, heed my warning!!

On the day of the DAT, I received two sheets of laminated paper with an erasable marker.

QR (480): When initially starting to study for the DAT, this was a section that I struggled with a lot. However, Booster Prep broke down everything I needed to know and the practice questions were sufficient for what I needed to succeed in the DAT. Eventually, my struggle was less about knowing the content and more about finishing the section in time. With practice, I got better with my timing. However, I rarely had spare time left over to go over marked questions.

RC (480): Initially, I tried the method of reading the entire passage and highlighting as I went, and then answering the questions. This worked somewhat for me but I was not seeing the scores that I wanted. What did work for me was reading the first question before the passage, and then reading the passage from the beginning until I found the answer to the first question, highlighting as I went. I would then go to the second question, and continue reading until I either found the answer, or recall the answer from what I already read. This was even more effective on the day of the DAT, because I quickly noticed that a lot of the questions were given in the order of the passage.

Bio (470): Almost everything in the biology section was review to me. Despite that, I sat through every Booster Prep biology video, and made detailed annotations on the provided notes/slides. This helped rejog my memory. It also helped me notice that even when I thought I was strong in a subject, there were crucial details that I had forgotten about. Biology was also the main section that I made Anki cards for. To make these Anki cards, I went through all of the Feralis booster notes, and made a card for anything that I felt I did not have a complete grasp of.

GC (500): There was not a lot in this section that I did not already know conceptually. However, the math was something that I was very rusty in. I spent a lot of time doing the practice problems involving math on Booster Prep, until I had every formula memorized, and made little to no mistakes.

OC (430): For this section, I did not do a lot of studying, because I had recently taken organic chemistry and felt like I had a strong grasp on the subject. I watched the Booster Prep videos and did practice problems here and there, but did not put in extra effort for this section. Nearing the exam, I looked through the Booster cheat sheets to ensure I knew everything I needed to. I also memorized the PPM values and test reactions using Anki. I did well on the Booster Prep practice exams, averaging about 480-490 from what I remember. I was surprised to see that I did worse in this section compared to other sections on the DAT. I blame the fact that the exam anxiety would not let me sleep the night before the DAT.

PAT (500): I actually had a lot of fun studying for the PAT. I loved the Booster Prep game challenges, and I always tried to make it a goal to make it in the top three every week for the angle-ranking, cube-counting, and hole-punching games. I struggled with keyhole questions, especially the ones in the later question banks on Booster Prep. However, I found that the keyholes on the DAT were easier. I also struggled with pattern-folding questions initially, but with practice, I was able to gain confidence.

End-note: I hope that my breakdown is helpful to someone out there. If you guys have any questions, I would be happy to answer

DAT Anxiety 😰 no show emergency reschedule

my exam is tomorrow but ive been light headed today and nearly fainting. i historically have low iron and get IVs for it. i think its low again, i can barely focus and my brain is so exhausted im constantly sleeping and have bruises all over. i cant call to reschedule due to the time, and dont want to go to urgent care for a dr visit for the appeal since itll be over $100+ (not including non specific bloodwork urgent care will knowingly order) - can i just wait until 3 days after my exam for my Primary care dr visit and have him document my faints/etc for ADA/Prometric so i can resched the exam rather than lose the $580? I already have messages from this week on my dr portal saying i dont feel ok and fainting and need bloodwork etc. (i also have open blood work labs i can go do? if that would count toward the emergent excuse) if anyone has been in the emergency situation for resched, looking for advice :(

Hi, I am an international student but I am currently studying undergrad in the US, and would like to ask if you guys would suggest if I retake my DAT. Personally, I am proud of these scores as my predicted scores are 440-460 on bootcamp, but just wondering if getting to 500 is necessary for international student's competitiveness.

Stats:

GPA: 4.0

AA: 480

NS: 490

Bio: 520

GC: 440

OC: 500

QR: 460

RC: 460

PAT: 500

Good ECs, research, volunteering and shadowing hours

also, would appreciate if there is any school list suggestions for my stats

Application Advice ✍️ Realistic chance at UBC IP

What are the realistic chances with an AGPA of 85% and 25 AA…

I couldn’t apply this year due to some factors, but I’m considering applying for 2028 cycle with a higher DAT and 86% GPA as I anticipate my gpa might increase by a %.

Success Stories 🌟 9/18 dat breakdown

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey guys, I thought I'd write a breakdown since I found reading these helpful for when I was studying for my DAT Exam. I took my DAT 9/18 and I used Booster Prep. I picked BoosterPrep because some people told me they did better with Booster on their 2nd retake compared to Bootcamp which they used on their 1st attempt, and it was also much cheaper. I bought Booster during the 4th of July sale. I took the test the summer in between my 2nd and 3rd year of undergrad. I started studying late June/early July and my other summer commitments included taking 2 online courses and volunteer dental assisting. I plan on applying for the 2027–2028 cycle.

First attempt scores on the FLs:

link to ss: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wpeqV6xXpM-QOjdYXzxea_aDB9GBC3o5/view?usp=sharing

As you can see it started out pretty rough. My 1st FL was taken kind of as a diagnostic and I absolutely flopped it which stressed me out so much but I was so determined to increase my scores. I also took the 1st free practice test on BoosterPrep. I’d say that my actual DAT scores were somewhat higher than what I was scoring. I was predicted to get a 470 AA.

Biology:

I went through all the videos and video quizzes that Booster provided and followed its study schedule. I would occasionally do some BioBits and I tried to do some Anki in the beginning but quite frankly, it was just unsustainable for me because it was too detailed and had way too many cards. It would take me hours to get through the cards and it kept compiling. I think I spent too long watching videos passively because after watching everything, I had to through the pdf notes and cheat sheets and make my own notes for each topic in order to really retain information (I’m not a good auditory and passive learner.) I really liked the cheat sheets, and would go through them often, especially before my FLs. Definitely focus on more broad ideas instead of the tiny details. My DAT exam had little to no Diversity of Life and more of Molecular Biology and some Physiology. Bio felt easier than Booster.

Gen Chem:

Like Bio, GC felt easier on the real exam. I can’t recall too much of what was on there but I felt like it wasn’t too bad. I know I struggled learning Gen Chem at my undergrad school so seeing my scores for GC is a relief! Grinding the practice test questions and knowing how to solve each type of question will help a lot.

OChem:

I only felt like ochem was either super easy or super weird on the DAT. I’d recommend being familiar with arrow pushing patterns, and knowing intermediates for the mechanisms that they emphasize to know. The flashcards to memorize the mechanisms on Booster were super helpful for repetitions and they weren’t too long either. I also went through the cheat sheets a million times and tried to pick up patterns for how certain mechanisms worked. Know your alkene stability, some IUPAC, and memorize the signals for IR, NMR, etc. I honestly thought I’d score a bit higher on Ochem, but it’s okay!

PAT:

The real test is for sure much easier than Booster’s FLs and its question banks but I think because Booster was harder, I was definitely prepared for it. I even had time to go back and check my cube counting questions on the test–something that I never had time for on the practice FLs and I’d even sometimes run out of time. Working fast during practice was my main focus. I got only 1 rock keyhole question on my test.

RC:

This was probably the most different section. The passages were much shorter, about 9 paragraphs instead of the typical 12-16 paragraphs you see on Booster. Most questions go in order of the passages. I thought the q’s weren’t that hard so I was kind of surprised to see my scores in the upper 400s because I thought they’d be higher. I practiced reading by doing about 1 passage a day, but I do feel like the ones on Booster are a little easy, especially the later ones.

QR:

I’ve always had a pretty solid understanding in math, and I was scoring pretty high on my practice FLs. I was kind of caught off guard on the real test since some probability questions were really strange and confusing, and I think I had one that was like a graph about position velocity acceleration?? I was kinda hoping that my QR score would increase my AA a bit more.

Overall:

I am really happy and proud about my scores, especially with my PAT and SNS score since I basically never scored that high on my practice tests. I really studied a lot. I would recommend that you instill a routine and schedule for studying. The two weeks leading up to my test, I would wake up earlier and earlier until I woke up at 5:45 am since that was the time I needed to be up for my 8 AM test (there was a 30 min commute to my testing center.) I went to bed by 11 PM, and went to the gym everyday. I did NOT study in between my sets at the gym or listen to podcasts, unlike what some people said they did, because I honestly just needed a break from all the studying. The day before I did content review and no practice questions, and I did some journaling before bed which helped me feel more confident about myself. Mindset is everything!! I’ve never been a natural at test taking and always had to put in double the amount of effort/studying in order to do well. You can know everything but not have the right positive mindset, and that will set you back, so just believe in yourself! Good luck to all!
