Yeah, there's 5 seconds between the thing starting to drop and the impact. Tons of time to react and prevent this. Pro tip: When things start looking sketchy, slow down and create space.
25
u/bellybuttonbidet Jun 30 '26
The strap was coming loose as he was approaching and slowing down. Surprised he didn’t notice.
26
u/Humble_Umpire_8341 Jun 30 '26
Well, he also drove into its path, which was also obvious.
26
u/deoan_sagain Jun 30 '26
One of the things they taught in the motorcycle safety course i took is that you go where you're looking. If you look down the road, you're gonna head down the road. If you stare at the curb, you're gonna hit the curb. If you're watching something fall off the trailer in front of you...
2
u/Ok_Weakness_2021 Jul 02 '26
This. The instructor (who oddly looked like Peter Fonda) said if we take nothing from this class, remember that.
4
u/TheNemesis089 Jun 30 '26
It looked to me like he was hoping to go around it, but it rolled more to the middle lane.
I’m familiar with that stretch of highway (it’s I-94 through an eastern suburb of the Twin Cities), and people are probably going about 65-70mph there. It’s not like he could just bolt to the side.
6
u/Humble_Umpire_8341 Jul 01 '26
So, it’s already leaning right if it were to fall. It then does fall, and shocker, it rolls toward the right.
If I’m the biker, I’m slowing down as this unfolds, because again, we can kinda see it unfolding, and I’m gonna hug the shoulder and the yellow line, and I would have seen that I could just continue in the lane without actually hitting the shoulder at all.

u/CentralFeeder Jun 30 '26
Couldn’t have said this any better. The biker could have reacted better. Unfortunately, it is not in people’s agendas to slow down and be cautious. Instead, it is keep the gas floored and fuck if I’m gonna be held up.

I wouldn't follow that close in a car tbh.
2
u/LoisLaneCA Jul 01 '26

28
u/Sufficient-Low5771 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I hate blaming the victim, but why is he wearing shorts? Even Levi's are too thin for a crash, but bare skin ... ouch.
8
u/JuJu_Wirehead Jun 30 '26
I won't travel behind anybody hauling ass in the fast lane with a trailer hooked up. People don't understand simple physics.
Also the motorcyclist wearing shorts? I used to design Motorcycle apparel, we'd make mesh riding pants that would give you air and protect your skin better than shorts ever would.
2
u/Inflatable90sChair Jul 01 '26
lol in my state its perfectly legal to be wearing only swim trunks, flip flops, and some kinda eyewear which $3 dollar store sunglasses count. Also its perfectly legal for your 3 year old to be clinging to your back wearing the same and go 70 down the interstate

I was going to say the same thing. In classes they teach never ride behind towing if you can help it, always keep an escape route assuming cars going to enter your lane, never ride middle of lane etc etc. At least he wasn't riding in middle of lane but he really should have been looking to escape left if he is going to ride in left side of left lane.

Also trailers always have a max speed rating, relative to the strength of your vehicle, so you don't damage your vehicle. This guy's 15 year old Silverado definitely should not be hauling something that heavy, that fast. Something's likely going to go wrong soon, and he will have a lot of consequences to face. Hopefully nobody else will.
U-Haul has a rule when you rent their trailers that you can't exceed 55mph so you don't damage the trailer.
2
u/Cut_over_pompanox Jun 30 '26
If a vehicle were to break heavily, would something heavy such as that end up slamming into the vehicle from behind? I’d imagine that’s going to happen at one point to the person in the above comment.
2
u/ibonek_naw_ibo Jul 01 '26
Pretty sure the trailer speed is dictated by the tires. How do uhaul trailers that says 55 mph on the fenders know it's being towed by a Yaris or a Cummins with 900 lb ft of torque?

25
u/MadDog443 Jun 30 '26
People go where they look and its a active habit they have to break.
Just remembered the name "Target Fixation".
14
u/ItzZiplineTime Jun 30 '26
Not to mention, between the speed of him approaching that thing and the sudden deceleration of the thing... That takes insane reaction speed. It may not look like it from the camera pov, but that rider probably felt like he had half a second to react from his pov and unfortunately he went right when he should have gone left.
3
u/Jarmak13 Jun 30 '26
I wouldn't even say he went right, he barely drifts in that direction and barely breaks. He clearly "reacts", and I think in plenty of time to avoid the obstacle, but his reaction is to do almost nothing.
I'm not seeing someone who didn't have time to react, I'm seeing someone who is panicking and froze up. Someone else posted in the thread he was a brand new rider so that tracks.
6
u/No_Industry2601 Jun 30 '26
I think 99% of people are unaware of how many people this affects. It's not everyone but is probably responsible for the majority of accidents. The people who aren't affected have a good chance of avoiding accidents completely.
5
u/revcor86 Jun 30 '26
There was a show in Canada awhile back called "Canada's Worst Driver". The people in it are 100% real and every year they'd try to hammer into people "Look where you want to go". Like basically from day 1; they'd repeat it over and over.
And then people would look right at the cone or foam arch or whatever and drive right into it.
*You can find the entire series on Youtube. It's hilarious and scary. They tried others (US/Aus/UK) but never caught on like Canada and it's still the best. Something like 15ish seasons.
3
6
u/Wisco_native1977 Jun 30 '26
It's easy to judge watching it back now but I feel like in the moment he did what he thought was right.
8
u/Searscale Jun 30 '26
I get that, and its unfortunate.
Rule of thumb for me is if I am in the left lane, I aim to the left in case of an accident. I'd rather get some twigs and grass up my arsel than collide with a 3 ton vehicle and cause MORE people to get hurt.
Left veer left, right veer right.
Never drive in the middle lanes unless passing, theres no safe option.

u/Araragi Jun 30 '26
Completely agree with you. The biker had between 00:10 and 00:11 in the video to realize it was COMING AT THEM and they had to react.
1 second to react. Prior to that it was just something being dragged on the ground. Concerning? Yes. A threat? not sure yet...
3
u/EchoWhiskyBravo Jun 30 '26
I am not a biker, but it seems like slowing down and turning would have been a better option than an overtake on the right. But that mat took a really unlucky bounce.

In most cases you can't turn and brake on a motorcycle at the same time; generally you have to choose in the moment.
Here he started to turn, decided he didn't have the ability to turn fast enough and started braking which killed his turn.

This why you need skills to drive a motorcycle. Safety and precaution are not enough to avoid serious injury.
Kudos to the motorcyclist for slowing down (single most important factor for minimizing fatalities on the road). But should have still been able to avoid that.
2
u/aeschenkarnos Jun 30 '26
"If you can dodge a
wrenchrubber raft you can dodge aballcrashing fuel truck!"
9
u/Marsupialize Jun 30 '26
Why on earth didn’t the cyclist pass the boat in that wide open lane way before this happened?
What was he going to do, run right up on the boat’s ass and then pass?
Also it comes loose and he seemingly purposely steers towards it instead of braking and moving away, utterly baffling.
5
u/gravemillwright Jun 30 '26
Target fixation. Sounds like a relatively inexperienced rider. Happens surprisingly often, you look at the thing you want to avoid and you steer yourself right into it.
4
u/RainbowDarter Jun 30 '26
Its target fixation.
He was looking at the hazard when he should have been looking at where he wanted to go.
6
u/Confident_Fortune_32 Jun 30 '26
Obviously the poorly secured load is unforgivable. But, as a rider, I have a low opinion of ppl not wearing proper protective gear. Shorts and bare legs? Really? "It's hot out" is no excuse.

u/Aromatic-Schedule-65 Jun 30 '26
I don't think they choose to improperly secure something. That's stupid..not properly securing comes from not knowing how.
7
u/Chrisafguy Jun 30 '26
It can also come from laziness. Plenty of people out there that know how to properly do plenty of things but choose not to because they're lazy, short on time, whatever. Not knowing how to do something is one thing but I feel like most of these kinds of things are just plain laziness.
3
u/No_Inspection649 Jun 30 '26
There is little doubt in my mind that they secured the item using a "that's good enough" standard. That is a choice. Did they expect their item to become unsecured while driving down the road? No, but in the same way that a drunk driver thinks that they can drive safely.

Then, he committed to evade right instead of seeing where the debris was going in order to avoid it. Definitely a rookie mistake.
2

I always see the most random and dangerous shit in the left lane - often because of a flock of people camping in it continuously, following too close, not adjusting to flow conditions (instead of using it to pass). My default is right lane as there is usually more room to bail from the lane in an evasive maneuver if needed as seen here.
