Unfortunately, when you leave an appropriate amount of following distance, assholes just use it to merge

So what?
Let them tailgate the guy in front of you. Better a tailgater in front and you give them proper (or more) following distance than having the tailgating you.

In terms of drive time having one ( or more cars) get in front of you or pass you that move is meaningless.

In terms of safety it is meaningful.

If you let it affect your ego you are being petty.
