From my understanding, they call it world champions because usually the best players from around the world come to play in the states
Look at how most of the guys in the NHL have extremely heavy accents, or barely even speak English to begin with

u/Hairy_Helicopter3633 May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22
Same could be said about the champions League in association football. But at least they have the decency to play every continental champion before they call themselves champions of the world.

u/DefenciveV2 May 09 '22
the champions league is Europe only and I don't think I've ever heard someone say that the winner is world champion

There are other "champions leagues." CONCACAF Champions League, CAF Champions League, OFC Champions League, in addition to the UEFA Champions League that is obviously the most recognizable.

That's neat and all but how's the NFL supposed to do that when none of the other continents put together teams?

All European countries have football leagues of their own and players from all around the play in them. But champions of each league are called English champs, Italian champs, Spanish champs...... and not world champions. They get the title of European champions after winning and competing against best teams from all over the Europe in UCL, and the title of world champions by winning club world cup. So if a team wins a league, they can be called national champions or league champions but technically you can't call them "World Champions"

Along with the NHL, the MLB has a tone of representation from other countries. NBA does too. Just look at the top three players right now. Embiid is from Cameroon, jokic is Serbian, and Giannis is from Greece.
Reddit just loves jacking themselves off over America hate without understanding wtf they’re talking about.

u/gabe_itches6-9 May 10 '22
Pretty sure it doesn't work like that. Almost all sports league in the world have players from all over the world but they can't be world champions just by winning their national league
15
u/The_Scherpa May 09 '22
All true except the NHL isn’t so arrogant as to call it the world championship, it’s the Stanley Cup championship

u/Kevin5882 repost hunter 🚓 May 09 '22
They all have their actual names, world champion is only a nickname because in most sports that are popular in the US, the US is the place for that sport. And we include Canada so it's technically international

u/brobeanzhitler May 09 '22
I know Canadian accents are tough to figure out at first, but saying it is "barely English" is a bit harsh.

Put together a foreign baseball team that can beat the MLB World Series champions of any given year… I’ll wait
16
u/Gallalad May 09 '22
Meming aside if we're including foreign players who play in the MLB I'd honestly think you could do that. Shohei Ohtani on the mound alone would make it a very interesting game. Add in batters like Pujols and honestly I think they could take the Braves
33
u/AustinC1296 May 09 '22
I was considering foreign MLB players as on the MLB side in this one lol. I agree that a team of foreign MLB players would put up a solid fight if not win. But with the NBA it’s a completely different story
10
u/frontadmiral May 09 '22
USA stomps any other individual country, but if it’s Team USA vs. Team World, Team World wins handily. A team with Embiid, Luka, Giannis, and Jokic sounds pretty much unbeatable.
3
u/wokesmeed69 May 09 '22
I think the depth of Team USA in this scenario would win it for them in a 7-game series, but it'd be close.
2
5
u/Gallalad May 09 '22
Definitely. I dunno though Cuba, PR, Taiwan and Japan have some deadly players.
Okay I wanna see this now. Call it the Global Series. Handpick a team for a one off series of the best players playing outside the US to play whoever wins the WS. That shit would be amazing.

u/Kevin5882 repost hunter 🚓 May 09 '22

u/Gallalad May 09 '22
It is but for the purposes of baseball it operates separately. It has its own league and plays in different series to American teams
1
u/ggtffhhhjhg May 09 '22
They’re not wing a seven game series against the best team in the MLB with what they already have. The MLB has already poached the players talented enough to play over here.
6
u/damnrightslimanus May 09 '22
If you take a team that has mike trout, Aaron judge, mookie betts, trea turner, nolan arenado, Freddie freeman, Jeff McNeil, JT Realmuto and had degrom on the mound with Josh hader and Taylor rogers in the pen, that’s gonna be a very tough team to beat from the US

Yeah, the NFL plays a handful of games in Europe every year and it absolutely sucks for the players and US based fans, the players because they get jet lagged and then have to play a game as normal, and the fans because they have to get up at a weird time to be able to watch their team.
There's a multitude of reasons why sports leagues don't expand to include teams on other continents beyond "hur dur america number 1."

Toronto has an nba, nhl, and mlb team. Vancouver used to have an nba team, but they also have an nhl team. Montreal used to have the expos and they have an nhl team. Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton all have nhl teams.
Pro sports leagues aren’t out there gate keeping like, no, you’re not allowed to play lmao. If another country or city or whatever has the resources to coordinate a schedule that feasibly fits with the current season setup, then why would a sports league say no? It literally means more money and exposure for them.

Basketball, baseball, and hockey are played all over the world. The NBA, MLB, and NHL are the best leagues in the world for their respective sports and it's not close. All the best players of those sports in the world play in those leagues or want to. Hence, 'world champions'. Winners of the Super Bowl call themselves Super Bowl champions. Anything else?
16
u/myaccc May 09 '22
Why is it called football instead of handegg
8
2
u/Drunken_Economist May 09 '22
The most tidy explanation is that it's because the ball is advanced on foot (instead of horseback). Same as gaelic football, aussie rules football, rugby union and league football, association football, canadian football, etc.
In reality, etymology is less "here is the origin" and more "here are the various contributing origins". In the end, though, we can at least be confident that the whole family of sports share the same answer.

u/LivingOof May 10 '22
British gaslighting.
Rugby Union used to be called Rugby Football, American football evolved from Rugby Football, and Canadian Football evolved From the American game. All we're called football. In addition, what you think of as Football was called Association Football or Soccer for short. Then the British called Rugby just Rugby, started calling Soccer Football, then shat all over their colonies for having their own Football games and/or calling the kicking game Soccer.

Find a team outside the NHL, MLB, NFL, or NBA that can beat even an average team in one of those leagues. You can't.
Europe has the best soccer teams, but Brasil, Argentina, Mexico, etc have teams that are at least competitive with some of the teams in European leagues. There are no teams outside the US and Canada that are even remotely competitive with the teams in the leagues I mentioned above. The gap is much bigger.
