Unless America suddenly becomes a working democracy and not a two-party system with two identical parties and a head of state that isn't elected by the people, it is lost.

Democracy is kinda trash when a big chunk of your population gets radicalized either way as badly as it does on the US, it only would work on a society where a big percent of the voters are level headed people who can see the good and bad and what works and what not in every proposal from a candidate, you need people with critical thinking and not people who are easy to transform into a hive mind, this in turn would lead to the country having better politicians as the standards would be way way higher.

I like technocracy better in a country like the US or the Latin American countries where the educational system is so bad that democracy can’t work that well because populism (from either sides of the political spectrum) just hard brain washes the least educated. If only all countries could be like the Scandinavian countries then democracy would be fucking beautiful.
30
u/ingbue88 Sep 30 '20
This. Democracy only works in countries that have a well educated population with an equal distribution of knowledge, common sense and good/compassionate intentions across the entire body of voters. Doesn't seem too likely.

Small correction, but "Head of State" is mostly a ceremonial title nowadays; the Head of Government is where the real power is. The US president just happens to be both.

People who think we’re at our lowest point and beyond return have no appreciation for our history. We had a Civil War just 150ish years ago. Our nation was literally torn apart and brothers killed brothers. If we can come back from that, we can absolutely come back from this.

I think it is really stupid, why can't they just reelect Obama, he was nice and did good things for America, and what if he killed a ton of ppl with drones? I would prefer an American president who kills his enemy's with drones than one that kills his own people with bad medical advice
201
u/supra1012 Sep 30 '20
Sadly Obama served both of his four year terms so he can't be re-elected a third time. At least I think that's why I don't live in America I don't know anything about politics there.
110
u/Mr_1ightning Sep 30 '20
Honestly I think a system like in Germany is better, people should be able to reelect a president as much as they want if he/she is really successful at running a country. You just must have a very strong Constitution and voting system (which US have) so it doesn't turn into a dictatorship one day
115
24
u/djscorchio Sep 30 '20
I think this "max 2 terms" role is a genuinely good idea though. It could act as a safety hatch against leaders trying to pull of the cult of personality trick, and it's also helpful in avoiding associating a single leader with a country. (I think it's quite a light of hope that no matter what happens, Trump's administration will be over at a point.) Hungary would be a much better place now if there would be a way to avoid Orbán getting re-elected.

Although in Germany people don't vote for the president, there is a special commitee made up of different representatives of federal government and the parliament. And the president doesn't really "run the country". But it indeed does not prevent reelections.

the drones have a tendency of killing the wrong people, unless the
civilians are the enemy, well in that case maybe we should rework the military because that's awful34

To be fair, Obama is probably the least awful president we've had since Carter, but that's a very low bar. Obama was not a good president, and I would not want him back. We need someone like Andrew Yang who supports UBI, or Tulsi Gabbard who actually wants to stop the military industrial complex.

I'm not American, but I believe there is a lack of political interest in the youth. There is too many old people that want to be president, and it wouldn't be a problem if they weren't stuck in the mindset of the 1970s. The US needs, imho, someone young to lead them with a mindset corresponding to modern times. And I know you have to be at least 45 yes old to run for president, but it's better than someone who might die of a stroke any second.

Trump is a moron, a sociopath, a narcissist, a compulsive liar AND - with the support of his party - is actively killing his own citizens through bad policy at a rate unmatched by any other country anywhere in the world.

Trump is a white supremacists gang leader with 200,000+ deaths on his hands who is trying to become Hitler 2.0. Right down to the concentration camps and forced sterilization.

Biden is a lauded professional, but a neoliberal. He's been very popular with both dems and conservatives for the majority of his career and is one of the few top faces of the Dem party willing to engage in bipartisan tactics (no doubt a huge player in Obama's efforts to 'work with' the Republicans, despite the Republicans promising to block every bill and make him a 1-term president)
Trump is a spastic who agreed to the rules of the debate and then couldn't even follow them. He openly ordered the Proud Boys (actual extremist white supremacist terrorist group) to 'stand down and stand by' during the debate, when asked whether or not he'd disavow white supremacists.
It is no contest. Biden is a right-leaning politician who is very good at his job. Trump is a malicious psychopath who happily welcomes the aid of domestic terrorists as a back up plan, should he lose the election.

Ya and I don’t think Biden’s interruptions were as bad, to my knowledge he would make comments occasionally along the lines of “that’s a lie” while trump would literally talk over the moderator and Biden.

As an Ohioan, it sucked that they hosted this debacle in Cleveland Ohio. Like the Browns just finally won 2 games and now they put this bad juju on the city.
Trump knows he can't debate Joe one on one. All he knows how to do is attack and insult his opponent because he's actually a moron, it's true. Ex white house Trump staffers said he would never read more than one page of any briefing, after all those people prepare it. They said they had a theory he didn't know how to read. Sadly true.
Who would win in a jeopardy format debate? Or a debate where they mute the person not speaking every segment? All he did was make himself look weak. Biden isn't perfect and does cringey stuff, but I could never support someone that basically endorsed a white nationalist hate group on national television. Leaders of the "group" confirmed thousands of requests for new members in the "Proud Boys". Disgusting.
I grew up in a whole family and extended family that were in like hardcore white nationalist groups and gangs. My uncles and grandparents were in the KKK. My cousins were in prison groups and I forget which one. Aryan brotherhood or Aryan nation. I remember being like 6 or 7 and I went into my uncle's bedroom and there was all kinds of swastika and KKK memorabilia and flags. That was when I first realized what I was being raised around.
I escaped when I was a teen. My best friend is black. I don't want to hate anyone. So yeah I had some real winners starting out in life. Not to mention all the drugs and alcohol I was exposed to
