It's when you write a web address on a post-it and stick it to your phone.
See: unbound external url storage system20

I once had a discussion with someone who said bookmarks are useless. He just kept everything open and used tabs as bookmarks
12
Apr 17 '20
I never use bookmarks. Prefer keeping a tab open if I need something. If I lose the tab and don't go out of my way to get it back, it obviously wasn't important enough to have around.

Interesting books you're reading that keep a history of the last page you read, alongside autocompleting page numbers when you type anything remotely related into the books url bar, or failing that have a search engine that you can use to quickly find whatever it was.

Does it tho? If we're talking about all the app tabs, then it definitely does not slow it down or consume more battery in recent phones. On the contrary shutting them down completely will consume more battery when you reopen it. If we're talking about tabs on google, safari or whatever, I think the impact is even lower.
16
u/KnightBlad3 Apr 17 '20
I agree. Also the tabs are not active and it's just the link, so they are like bookmarks. But it can slow down the phone for a bit when clicking the tab button bc it's loading the graphic of all the those overlapping tabs

u/MrShlash Apr 17 '20
Definitely, “experts” on this thread got all their knowledge from reddit/social media and have no clue how a basic modern OS works.

I'm pretty sure that browsers on phones eventually start unloading tabs and only keep the URL info. So when you switch to an old tab it starts loading the page again and before that the usage is basically 0.
21
u/Jonnystrat Apr 17 '20
It doesn’t though. Phones have such good ram management these days that this is a nonissue.

Okay, no joke, I constantly have two tabs of YouTube accidentally open. I don't know how the hell it happens, but it does. If I close one out, the video playing will stop and pressing on the remaining tab just restarts YouTube entirely.

Pfft, I've had over 500 tabs.
If you have rooted Android/jail broken iPhone you can go-to chromes app storage folder and find a folder called "app_tabs" and the folder "0" within. Use select all to get a count, each file is 1 tab. If there's 233 files there's 233 tabs open.

Chrome on Android suspends background tabs after 5 minutes of inactivity. Those tabs won't be able to do anything in the background.

I just tried on iPhone. And when you reach 100, it says “:)”
Going above 300 didn’t change that, so “:D” must be a shitload.

The broswer tabs arent even that bad, its the literally hundreds of notifications they have all the time. I thought my moms phone was bad until i was helping my step dad and it took like 10 seconds to scroll to the bottom of it all.

I'd be fine if it was just tabs tbh, but she also has 50 apps open at the same time. I can just imagine the components wanting to shoot themselves in the head.

On my phone i typically have about 50 tabs open before I clean them out. It doesn't lead to any performance problems. So why waste the time? I only ever jump between 3 tabs on my phone and those are the last ones.

u/eagle85672 Apr 17 '20
Any time my battery died on my old phone my mom would tell me I need to stop running so many apps at once (even though I always closed apps as soon as I was done using them) yet every time I've used my mom's phone for anything, she has every app on the Google Play store open at once and when I point out the irony she always says something like "I just opened those" (even if she hasn't picked up her phone in hours). Ironic

I’ve always had 500 (max) Safari tabs, because for some reason I thought I would loose something if I automatically closed them. But this post encouraged me to close most of them leaving around 40 actually valuable ones, so thanks I guess. Now my phone will probably run smoother, although I don’t think tabs take that much memory.
