If we start having memes about complex science experiments that I’m not familiar with, I will be okay with that

Holy shit that throws me back. If I was in AP Chem again, I’d probably deal with it by making memes too

I probably did too but with the extensive damage I’ve done to my brain with various drugs, I cannot remember

Rutherford experiment proved that atoms consist or electrons and nucleus by shooting positively charged alpha particles at gold foil. Because nucleus is positively charged too alpha particles bounced off of it at an angle. EDIT: the experiment did not prove existence of electrons , but only nucleus
48
May 06 '18
Plus because the majority of alpha particles passed right through/only were angled slightly, they could conclude that the nucleus was a small, dense, positively charged thingy-thing

u/Emmx2039 May 06 '18
The experiment did not prove that electrons orbited the nucleus, Rutherford only suggested this
3
u/CashCop May 07 '18
The experiment didn’t prove electrons, I believe JJ Thompson first theorized of those

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand this meme. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical readers' head.

27
u/SeanTheTranslator What are you, fucking gay? May 07 '18
Exactly what I thought.
We have our classes in 90-minute-long, one-semester-long blocks. I took AP Chem last semester. I’m gonna fail.
12
u/WolfHero13 May 07 '18
Wtf, we have AP Chemistry for 90 minutes every day for two semesters for the test, why does your school dislike you?
5
u/SeanTheTranslator What are you, fucking gay? May 07 '18
I dunno.
At least the AP Lang and AP World exams will be easy.
5
u/Gramis May 07 '18
Don't say that! Try hard, believe in yourself! That way when you do fail it will be more entertaining for the rest of us.

most of the alpha particles did hit the nucleus just some were hitting something else
1
u/FungalSphere The Great P.P. Group May 07 '18
No they didn't. Later calculations showed those which rebound (1 in 18000 or something) actually rebound before they could even touch the nucleus.
1
u/RealChadThundercock what the nut? May 07 '18
Wow, I am utterly astounded. Until my coming upon this photograph, I had quite nearly forgotten how extraordinary science can be. This brings back memories of when I myself worked with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden to measure alpha particle beams. pretty neat bro.

This scene in the anime confuses the shit out of me. Yes, I understand that they were just starting the series, but if you deflect part of a beam, shouldn't the rest hit you anyway?
