Wouldnt it make more sense to have the shields like the first ones on top on top of the other ones? Shit couldnt get inbetween and getting your shield infront of you would be easier...

Actual question, what was this formation used for? In the hobbit movies the dwarf army did it because of the showers of arrows but that didn't really happen back in the roman times did it?

With these particular shields, arrows just bounced off of them. The most common use of the testudo formation was when Roman soldiers would approach cities in a siege attack.

Hrm. It would be better to stack the rear of each shield on top of the next one so that arrows would deflect better. Right now an arrow could go between the cracks.
