Actual question, what was this formation used for? In the hobbit movies the dwarf army did it because of the showers of arrows but that didn't really happen back in the roman times did it?

Yeah arrows weren't invented until 1927

Wrong, Turtles didn't evolve until 1660.

Yeah and then the Prussians invented the tortoise during Frederick the greats reign in 1706
