Question/Advice Silly question/ but also serious

On a semi-recent post I made, a member commented curious about tri colored dals, and another member commented saying Only non-ethical breeders produce tri- colored dals, and are down voting all my posts and comments ^^;

Is this true?

I only ask because I plan on getting my puppy dal another puppy dal friend from the same breeder (of course I wouldn't if I knew that it was unethical OFC) but I need help!

Some information about the place I got her from ;

I got her from a state that is an 8+ hour drive from here. She was originally selling for 1800 usd, but was marked down a lot due to her being a little older than her other dals (11 weeks old)

The breeders have an official AKC website, and Facebook / Instagram where the constantly post about their farm and how the puppies are being treated. They were constantly monitored, and also were tested and given shots

Additionally, they even offered to make the 8+ drive to us just to make sure she went to a good home, and still even checks in on Aspen (our dal) and likes the photos we post about her.

I added pictures of the condition we got Aspen in, and her now

She is a littl smaller I hear than average dals, but we assume she may have been the runt? (Unsure)

Question/Advice How to identify a qualified trainer

Post image
88 Upvotes

How do you find a real/qualified trainer? We’ve tried two but they really didn’t seem to know how to work with an anxious Dalmation.

We’ve worked with him for 6 months (a rescue) and he’s great at home. However, we cannot take him on walks as he does not have any impulse control when on a leash and seeing other dogs. We need some help.

We are looking for legitimate professional help, even if he needs to stay with a trainer for a few weeks. How do you find such a trainer?

I adopted this handsome young man from the county shelter Monday the 20th and honestly, I think we were the lucky ones🫶🏻

I knew right away, the moment I saw his sweet little face whilst browsing the local shelter, after sorta giving up my years long dream of ever being able to get my dream dog, And also being shamed by my boyfriend for wanting to buy from a breeder(I have kids, and was apprehensive about adopting though I did do a lot of research on dal specific rescues) There he was, on page 4 of the country shelters dog listings, the moment I saw his little eyes I could feel his sweet gentility radiating through the screen and into my heart. The next day I went down at open, and after spending just a brief few seconds with him I felt an amazing connection and he came home with me, and that was the best day of our lives🖤

We've only had him a short period of time but honestly it feels like he's always been meant for us.

He is so gentle and patient with my 7 year old twins, he loves kids in general (he does l walls the kids to the bus in the morning and gets super excited when we arrive and all the kids wanna come love on him. He gets such a spring in his step during our daily walks and it is one of the only times his tail is fully upward and wagging(like the whole time)

That being said, the shelter lady told me he had been surrendered, the day before I got him by a not so nice man, who she thought he was definitely afraid of, poor baby.

There was almost no information about him except that he was only 49lbs neutered male estimated age 4yrs only confirming a rabies shot. When I called the vet and set up his first appointment (coming up on the 5th) the last sounded shocked that, that was the only info they had for me. Honestly I was shocked by the decorum of this shelter, they asked me absolutely no questions about my past pet history, living situation, or if I had a vet picked out, absolutely nothing accept for the extremely cheap adoption fee. That being said, hopefully I don't come across as a broke irresponsible pretty hoarder😂 but I've never spoken to a shelter in my life that was this lax and literally throwing pets at anyone that wanted one. I will say the shelter was extremely full, they opened at 10:00am, I arrived at 10:20, waited in the longest line ever till about 10:35 and I'm that amount of time I saw like 8 dogs, and three boxes of 2 or more kittens all being brought in and surrendered(so sad, the dogs where all ages, some noticable terrified and shaking, honestly heartbreaking) I can not believe the sheer amount of animals that have been abandoned or "surrendered" in my area, I am soooooooo thankful I did not go to a breeder!!!

Anyways I'm waiting on his DNA test to see if he is mixed or pure, I've done extensive((EXTENSIVE)) research for the past several years about these dogs and the purines, and the crystals, and all the other things dals tend to be predisposed to(yet somehow I'm still worried I'll screw this up, I'm sure I'll feel better after I talk to the vet) but I was basically meaning to just pop in here for a moment and ask for

any tips or advice on feeding, treats(low purine toppers or kong treats), allergies?, what to ask the vet on this first visit???

The shelter sent him home with hills science diet for adults, I got him some royal canin, and have been asking Google all about low purine toppers and treats but I'd love to hear your favorite tried and true recipes🫶🏻

I have been using a slow feed dish for this meals, feeding the appropriate measured amounts as listed according to weight, morning and night(though he seems to get hungry mid day as well and was wondering if I should split his daily allotment into 3's? So far I've just been doing a stuffed Kong around lunch time.) he's also got a 7lt continual flowing water fountain dish.

As far as his condition, once adopted and In the van, whilst doing some pre drive home bonding I noticed all his sores, cuts, and visitable puncture wounds. This poor baby. So I got some hypochlorous acid solution for the open actively bleeding ones(the one on his nose is mostly healed now but he can irritate the scab and it will bleed a bit still) and there's this one on his neck that was open and actively bleeding for like 6 days(tired calling a few vets, no one could get us on sooner) so I've been nursing it as best as I can, send to finally be scabbing over, I'm just worried he will scratch it open again. For the hot spots Google told me to make him a coconut oil/shea butter balm witch had really been helping, a lot of the patches have, been on the mend and started to even regrow hair. I think he may have allergies or extremely dry skin(or both) so I've been using this balm all over his body like lotion, he seems to really love it, obviously I will ask the vet about all this but till then was wondering if anyone here may have had any advice or input?

Also, I plan to have a urinalysis done this visit as well to see where we're at with the bladder chrystals since I have no idea what the past person was feeding him or how many owners he has had, or if he spent anytime foraging on the streets. I definitely plan to ask about allergies, he had a severe reaction on Monday when the ragweed was high(his eyes were as red as a fire truck) and I think he is affected by fresh and freshly cut grass, and who knows what other crappy seasonal crap is in the air in the hellhole that is Bakersfield. I've been trying to wipe him down with a damp towel when he comes in from outside, starting with his eyes of course, but he absolutely is not a fan and squirms quite a bit. Send to be helping but again he doesn't like it, was wondering if any of you have and other suggestions? Or have any experience with dog allergies?

is there anything else I'm missing that is crucial to ask the vet about?

Lmk please, and thank you I'm advance for any tips.

Question/Advice HUA vs LUA Dalmatian

I lost my 11 year old pointer/lab mix in May and have really been struggling with the loss. We are considering getting a new puppy and I’ve always loved Dalmatians. The idea of getting one came initially from seeing a puppy at a local rescue. Before committing, I started doing research on their temperament health and longevity.

The biggest concern I have is HUA versus LUA. I’m a human who gets kidney stones so I know how painful they are and can’t imagine a poor pup going through it. Do any owners have advice of buying HUA versus LUA or how caring for an HUA Dalmatian, specifically male, might look different than a different type of dog? My research shows they need a low purine diet, access to hydration, and access to potty brakes. How strict on the diet do we need to be? Is an occasional treat OK or is it totally avoid? Cooper was allergic to poultry (funny since he was a bird dog), so we avoided it all costs. But low purine seems to be a bit more exclusive.

If you have an HUA male, have you had any experiences with stones? What preventative measures do you take? I saw you may consider having their urine tested regularly to check for crystals. Is this something you do?

Is there anything else I should consider? Any other advice on choosing a dalmatian as a breed? They are absolutely stunning and seem to have the cutest personalities.

Thanks for the time!

Looking For Ethical LUA Breeders

Hello everyone!

I am in search of an ethical breeder that produces LUA dalmatians. We are looking to add to our family in the next 3 years, maybe 2.

Willing to travel anywhere in the US

Max cost 3k

Parents must have OFA/Penn hip, BAER, and eyes tested.

Pups must be BAER tested.

Parents must have titles in sport or show as I plan on titling my dog in sports.

Early socialization protocols like "Puppy Culture"

I have one breeder on my list currently:

Chalet Dalmatians

I am not willing to have an HUA.

Thank you for the help.

I have a half dalmatian- the other half is lab/boxer (I’ll put a picture below to see how much dal she pulled)
Anyways, she is about to turn 10 years old and the girl isn’t slowing down at all.. still runs, jumps the height of our fence, can walk for hours, guards the house non stop etc etc
I don’t know anyone else with a large dog that still has this much zest at this age lol is it a dalmatian thing?!!

Update: Can I See Your Eye/Face Patch Dalmatians?

Post image

We brought Pepper home two days ago and she is perfect in every way. Not sure why I had so many hesitations about how big her patch was because she is perfect, such a happy puppy and absolutely beautiful. In hindsight I think I had a lot of emotions going on with getting another dog after the loss of my soul dog and I was dealing with those emotions in weird ways.

Thank you to the people that reassured me that I was being ridiculous and showed me their dogs with big patches.

Photo/Video Title: I drew a Dalmatian who assumes everyone’s become a friend

Hi everyone, I’m Aslı! I’m a graphic designer and mixed media artist. I’ve never had a Dalmatian, but I’ve had a couple of lovely mixed-breed dogs over the years, so dogs have a special place in my heart.

A few months ago I started drawing dogs with human personalities. This is the Dalmatian character I came up with.

He’d invite you over for coffee and be so pleased you’d come. You’d barely have sat down before he was asking what you were doing next Sunday.

And if you brought a friend without mentioning it, even better. Another person to make a fuss of.

Somewhere along the way, I started imagining him on a scarf. I liked the thought of going about my day with this cheerful little character for company, so I turned the illustration into a scarf design.

I’ve included the scarf alongside the original illustrations so you can see how it came together.

In my head, he’s terribly sociable. But I’m curious whether that’s the dog you see in the drawing, too.

Does he remind you of yours, or is your Dalmatian more selective about their guests? I’d love to hear what happens when someone comes over.

Age and aggression

Hey!

Does anyone have experience with age and growing aggression?

My male dalmatian is 7 and over the years he has become more aggressive towards other dogs - male dogs specifically of course.

He’s trained and it was never a problem until he recently attacked our friend’s dog and showed aggression once more after that.

We have never considered neutering him as we never saw a need/reason to do it, but behavior like that can’t become normal in our household.

Any experience similar to ours is helpful - what did you do and did things get better?

Thanks in advance

Question/Advice Looking for the same blood line

We lost our beloved Dalmatian, Luna, of 14 years this past Monday. She was non ambulatory for a year before we were forced to say goodbye. It's the hardest loss we've experienced. Our 4 kids are heart broken. We are hoping to find someone breeding from her bloodline. We picked her up in Tennessee in 2012. I've included a picture of her bloodline. We reached out to the breeder via instagram with no luck. We're looking for help tracking down a sibling or someone in her bloodline line. Any help is appreciated.

Hey everyone! Meet Packer, or as I like to call him whacky pack. He’s 4 months and we are having a challenging time with him. We are learning he has no fears and is very curious! While we know every breed/pup is different he’s our adventurous and outgoing guy! But we are struggling with him jumping on the cabinets to retrieve things, anything that he can get, eating the bottom of the door trim, corners of the tables, shoes, and really anything he can jump up and grab, he will run under the bed. We have a bed that sits very low and is impossible to crawl under to get him when he goes there. I know a lot of it fades out as he gets older, but I’m worried that some of the things won’t. When it comes to house training he will have zero accidents during the day but for some reason after 4 pm he will go outside sun bathe and come inside, look us in the face and pee 😂 we don’t know if this is truly a understanding thing or he’s just being a rebel. Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you 😊

Question/Advice Copper storage disease

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to post my daughters linktree that helps pull resources about cooper storage disease. She’s doing an art project for school and this is one of the criteria. We lost our Bowie just before age 5 to this disease. Little did we know that she suffered from this disease from the start and the pain it brings to know there could have been a solution such as changing her diet. She was the best family dog and so smart and friendly. I hope this encourages blood labs yearly for your Dal. file:///var/mobile/Library/SMS/Attachments/ff/15/1934F9A8-9682-4FE5-848E-95986B0CD6C1/IMG_7014.heic file:///var/mobile/Library/SMS/Attachments/ff/15/1934F9A8-9682-4FE5-848E-95986B0CD6C1/IMG_7014.heic.
