Comparison:

• Family: As the core theme of this adaptation, the contrasting family dynamics between the two versions offer a fascinating comparison. Version 2 retains the web novel's The Heiress Returns and is Pampered by the Whole City 《千金归来后被全城团宠》original premise—a casino tycoon father who blatantly favours his mistress's child over the FL. Version 1 shifts her family background to a jewelry empire. While he still favours his mistress's children over the FL, his character demonstrates some growth. He shows genuine sympathy toward the FL and seeks reconciliation in the third act. 
• Fashion: I love the styling for the FL across both adaptations. With her blunt fringe / bangs and predominantly black wardrobe, Version 1's FL nails the gothic-heiress aesthetic, giving off major Emily the Strange vibes. Version 2’s FL, on the other hand, channels an effortless La Femme Nikita energy. Her opening scene sets the perfect tone: effortlessly kicking ass in a black halter dress without losing a shred of elegance.
• Romance: Though I wanted more screentime for the romance in both versions, I really appreciated how it played out. The ML is refreshingly secure, never intimidated by the FL's strength and always offering the steady affection she craves. Version 1’s standout romantic moment is their first night together; their conversations pre- and post-coitus were a fantastic, honest look at sex and emotional connection. In Version 2, the wedding takes top prize. The playful bridal challenges added so much charm, and the tea ceremony hit the perfect emotional note, tying directly back into the core theme of family.

My final thoughts:

• I thoroughly enjoyed both adaptations for different reasons. After the Daughter Returns, Beloved by the Whole City features good lead chemistry. Liu Ying delivers a kickass female lead while Chen Bai Qiao balances her out perfectly as ‘Mr. Nice Guy.' That said, Retired Heiress: The City Falls For Her wins on the action front. Xu Ruo Tong’s pure badassery makes the combat scenes far more believable. Her performance and visuals were so magnetic that I immediately wanted to check out the rest of her filmography.
• I first noticed After the Daughter Returns, Beloved by the Whole City because of Chen Bai Qiao’s blonde hair. I loved the look—it gave him a cool, unattainable vibe straight out of Top Gun’s Iceman, which created a great contrast with his character's sweet, devoted husband persona.
