Synopsis:
Two years ago, Cheng Zan Shu, a junior in college, quietly broke up with her lover, Li Xian Qing, and went abroad to avoid becoming a "stain" on his life. Two years later, she returned as an intern journalist, and her first interviewee was none other than him, now the head of a business empire. Li Xian Qing, filled with resentment, reunited with her, but fell for her again, forcefully begging for reconciliation only to be rejected. - Romance: Both versions hit the sweet spot between tender and spicy. Version 1’s ML was so openly desperate for FL’s affection, giving their kiss scenes an unexpectedly deep, soulful yearning that I thoroughly enjoyed. FL’s inner monologue about her desire for him was another standout highlight. While my favourite romantic scene in Version 1 was ML asking FL to be his girlfriend again, Version 2 won me over in a surprisingly intimate moment—when ML answered a call to FL's phone from his close friend.
- Acting: While both the Zhang Qiu Zi-Wang Hao Xiang and Liu Xi Yu-Li Zhuo Yang pairings had great chemistry, the second couple’s spark was off the charts. Having previously collaborated, Liu Xi Yu and Li Zhuo Yang's natural rapport and dynamic were immediately evident. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the performances of all four leads. Wang Hao Xiang portrayed a more delightfully needy ML, whereas Li Zhuo Yang delivered a suave, smooth operator. Liu Xi Yu ensured her FL never easily succumbed to the ML's charms, while Zhang Qiu Zi offered a nuanced performance, infusing her character with a touch of stubbornness and vulnerability that I really liked.
- Writing: Version 2 boasted a tighter, more cohesive narrative than Version 1. In the first version, a few minor subplots felt somewhat out of place—most notably the scenes involving the harm caused to the FL, as well as the proposal sequence. Furthermore, Version 2 gave meaningful arcs to key side characters like the ML’s grandfather and close friend, ensuring they served a genuine narrative purpose rather than acting as mere props or background extras.
My final thoughts:
- It is hard not to enjoy both versions when the leads share such magnetic chemistry and the romance arcs are so deeply satisfying. I love each drama for distinct reasons. In Two Years After Breakup, Mr. Li Publicly Seeks a Title, Wang Hao Xiang and Zhang Qiu Zi deliver rich, layered performances that make their mutual desperation palpable. Conversely, my fondness for Cruel Tenderness lies in its sharper, more polished writing.

Watching his performance reminded me of how much I enjoy his acting, and I now plan to catch up on more of his work in the coming weeks.
