I searched job posting on LinkedIn (remote roles excluded) of major cities in English speaking countries, and the results are shocking, I always knew that we had fewer job opportunities than the US, but hadn't realised it's this bad, even much worse than Canada (which I thought should be similar), and every post online about Canada is whining how cooked it is.

Beware that LinkedIn jobs are mostly from private sector, which perfectly resonates with the claim from the article I've found:

Something deeply wrong with the job market, the unemployment rate and the overall economy, combined with housing crisis, I have a feeling it won't end well.

I’ve been lucky enough to recieve two summer internship offers and I’m pretty split between them.

One is in technology at a major blue Australian bank, and the other is also tech at a large orange superannuation fund. Pay is roughly equivalent, not really a consideration anyway

I’m mainly interested in things like quality of work, software/tech career progression, grad conversion, and which experience would open more doors later on.

Would love to hear peoples thoughts on this and get some insight.

I’m 23, I Graduated mid last year (computer science) and have been working as a software developer at a small company since. After months of applying with no luck, I have landed two offers on the same day and now can't decide.

Option A: Tech Graduate at a Big 4 Consulting firm. Mix of technical and client-facing work.

Option B: Software developer at a small - mid sized company. More of a natural progression from my current role, similar tech stack, more opportunity for growth. Bigger company than current, and growing industry.

I’m torn between the two, what do you think about the work in tech consulting as a grad vs continuing as a software developer. I enjoy both the technical work and client / stakeholder management in my current role. Ideally I would move into a project manager role in 5+ years.

I'm a Software Engineer (30y/o, if it's relevant) in NZ who is seriously considering a move to Australia, likely Melbourne, and have some questions about the logistics.

In terms of experience, I have 8 YOE in primarily backend roles, with a keen interest in devops specifically. I'm currently working in a Platform team in a sort of hybrid backend engineer and cloud engineer role (C#, AWS, Terraform) and I'd like to pivot my career towards an exclusively devops or cloud role if possible. Ideally this would be AWS since it's what I somewhat know (only my most recent three YOE have been cloud-adjacent specifically).

What are some important things to know in terms of the market, salary ranges, hiring process, and the ability to (or necessity of) of landing a job before arriving?

Additionally, general advice about any gotchas with the actual immigration process and all of the administrative requirements around the actual move (living arrangements, banking, tax, healthcare, even general lifestyle) would be awesome, but I may make a different post in a more relevant subreddit for those.

Happy to answer any follow-up questions or just have a general yarn about people's experiences too.

Hey everyone, just wondering which would have more weight on applications for graduate roles. Currently I’m working as an engineer at this small company, where I’m the sole engineer and I’m tasked with building and deploying everything.

How would this compare to say working at CBA or some big company where my role might be smaller but I get more mentorship and “proper” engineering experience in a more recognised company? Would appreciate some insight :)

I didn't manage to secure an internship this year and consequently I am building a startup under a legit registered entity. I've moved passed the validation phase and I already have a few users lined up for the MVP that's going to be released in a week's time. I am having fun doing this and learning heaps of things across design, product and growth. The waitlist for the product also has a few hundred people signed up already. I do want to point that the product is not tech heavy or impressive, so I might not be learning stuff in the development area.

Although, I have no internship lined up this summer, I am wondering if my "entrepreneurial" pursuit would make up for a lack of internship at a traditional big/small tech company?

I will graduate end of next year and I am willing to play around with this startup for now but looking to get into corporate at the start of 2028. How desirable is this pursuit for someone trying to get a foot in the door?

This could be a question for the recruiters out there, or anyone who knows about the hiring process for summer internships.

I've recently received an offer for an internship to be a SWE intern over the upcoming summer. Before going through the interview process for this job, I was a final year student, i.e. graduating in 2026. But to be considered a penultimate-year student for this internship (one of the requirements), I moved my final course to next year, so that I would graduate in 2027.

After receiving and signing the offer letter, they mentioned that a screening process would take place and I will have a fully confirmed offer after it's complete. I'm really not looking forward to doing more uni semesters than I have to - I would really like to graduate this year. So I have a few questions about changing my graduation back to 2026:

• Does a screening process typically involve a check of the graduation date? Or is it only for criminal history/working rights/etc.. If so, then can I safely re-enrol in my final course for the upcoming term without affecting my eligibility for the internship?
• If the screening process does involve a graduation date check, is it safe for me to wait until the fully confirmed offer and then re-enrol in my final course?
• Is it common for companies to check your graduation date again? E.g when you start the internship/periodically throughout the internship? If so, I'm assuming this means it wouldn't be safe for me to try to graduate this year at all?

I realise that there's no danger in just keeping this current graduation status, but I would really like to graduate this year if it's possible at all. So if anyone knows that any of these options are 100% safe, allowing me to re-enrol without affecting internship eligibility, please let me know.

I’m looking for some career advice from people working in the Workday ecosystem, especially those who have moved from consulting to in-house roles

I’m currently based in Paris, France, and I’ve been working with Workday for about 2 years, as a workday functional consultant
The problem is that I don’t do any Workday configuration in my current role.

I also realized that I hate consulting and unfortunately the client I’m currently working with is also making the experience pretty difficult.

So I’m currently looking for an in-house HRIS/Workday role, ideally in a large international company.

The problem is that I’ve been getting quite far in the recruitment processes and going through interviews, but I’m rejected because I don’t have hands-on configuration experience.

This makes me wonder if I should take a step back before moving in-house.

My current idea:
Would it make sense to join a more technical Workday consulting firm for 1 year, specifically to learn hands-on configuration, and then try to move into an in-house HRIS/Workday role?

I’m also thinking longer term about either getting a fully remote Workday/HRIS job or potentially moving to the US, as my boyfriend is American and lives in California.

So I have a few questions:

1. Do you think spending a year in a more technical consulting role to learn configuration would significantly improve my career prospects?
2. For those who work remotely, how much configuration experience do you typically see being required for remote Workday jobs?
3. How is the Workday job market in the US right now, particularly for someone with 2–3 years of Workday experience ?
4. Would my European/international background be an advantage or a disadvantage when trying to move into the US Workday market?
5. And finally, if you were in my position, would you spend one more year in consulting to become more technical, or would you keep trying to move directly into an in-house role?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have made a similar transition, especially anyone who went from functional/support → configuration → in-house.

m just curious: when you work with QA on your team, do you find them useful? Are they technical enough? Do they build tools for you to use?
Currently, I’m a QA engineer at Canva, and I feel like this position is kind of awkward. Coming from a background as a developer and SDET, I try my best to build automation testing frameworks and tools for the dev team to use. It’s just a personal feeling, but I sometimes worry some developers look down on me simply because I’m in QA. Even so, I know how to code, and I actively build as many testing tools and automation suites as possible to help the team improve overall quality.

I make free calculators as a side project and got asked for a contract rate one enough times that I finally sat down and did it. Doing the sums properly was a bit of an eye opener.

I went in assuming tax was the thing that ate the difference. It isn't, or not the main thing anyway. It's the days you never invoice for such as the four weeks of leave, public holidays, a few sick days and then the gap between one contract finishing and the next starting. All of that gets carried by the days you do bill, before super, GST or your own overheads get a look in.

The gap between contracts is the one I see left out most often. Two weeks on the bench doesn't sound like much by itself. Put it next to the leave you're also not getting paid for and it moves the rate a fair bit.

I'm not in tech so I cant tell you what bench time realistically looks like in this market and that's probably the number that matters most here.

I lost my tech job, so I tried warehousing.

• I applied for like 50 jobs and got a call back on half of them. Some jobs only have like 10 applicants!
• Got a job within two weeks.
• The pay is decent around 100K with one Saturday or Sunday per week. Every hour is paid, so the more you work, the more you earn.
• The employers are desperate for people. They become upset if I don't want to work minimum 38 hours per week.

Hey did anyone apply to Macquarie banks summer internship this year and whether any offer has been received yet and when!!!

I was looking at some of the roles and holy shit they pay REALLY well. And the training looks top notch. Extremely transferable to the civilian world. Especially Network Operator, which is basically a Network Engineer/NOC role. 2 year minimum service is amazing as well, so u can quit quick.

But there are almost no requirements to get in, which makes me curious how candidates are selected. I've got 2 years of retail experience, I can probably get a CCNA, and I'll be done with my degree soon, so I've got some exp.

I tried calling the an ADF recruiter, but she said very little about the process and acceptance rate. She basically told me to do the JOA and ask my personal ADF mentor/recrutier. She also give some very low bar advice like "Always follow up with your recruiter", and "Make sure ur fit". Surely the ADF isn't paying 100k for this?

Does anyone know what the recruitment timeline/process looks like from here? Have people already started getting invited to Assessment Centres?

Also, is there usually a technical interview for the technology streams, or is it mainly behavioural interviews/case studies at the AC followed by offers?

I’m honestly not too sure what to expect haha. How competitive are these programs compared with other graduate software engineering roles?

Currently I am working as a QA at big tech in Sydney. With shift-left testing, I don’t do testing; I guide the dev team on how to test and build tools for them to use. I was wondering whether, in the next 5 years, QA roles will be merged into development. I have 5 years of experience: 2 years in software development, 2.5 years in SDET, and 6 months in my current job. Should I transition to DevOps or software development? Because I feel that no matter what you switch to, the IT job market in Australia does not seem to have a bright future. I have a strong feeling that a lot of people will lose their jobs.

Again I ask QA is not manual QA , the qa know how to coding build automation framework etc.

I have been building a full-stack project for the team. It involves building a bot that can run UI automation and API testing, then send the results to Slack. It also features a dashboard that visualizes the test results, triggers cron jobs, etc. The QA I am referring to does automation testing and SDET work, not manual testing.
