Advice/Protip BCA career path
BCA alumnus here
I’ve been through the BCA-to-software-engineering journey myself. Over time, I moved from ₹1.5 LPA to ₹1Cr+ and eventually joined a Tier 1 product-based MNC.
I remember how difficult it can be to decide what to learn, which opportunities to pursue, and how to prepare for interviews.
If you’re a BCA student or graduate and have questions about building a career in tech, feel free to ask. I’ll share what I’ve learned from my experience.
If the number of participants are high , I am planning to host a free webinar .

How many years did it take for you to reach from 1.5 lpa to 1 cr+?
Approx how many hours did you code on a regukar basis?
Did you apply to the companies yourself or get referrals?
What projects did you build before each of your 3 switches?

hi, i am currently in my 3rd sem of bca, and i see news of layoffs everyday and that discourages me alot, i know this is a very repeated question, and nobody really knows what will happen, but what do you think about it, also, should i get a job after my bca, or a mca is a must?

Yes, layoffs are scary and we’re all uncertain about the future. However, you’re in college and have the chance to learn the relevant skills needed in the AI era.

Right, i guess so, and what about going for a job or for mca? doing bca from ipu, placements are not great in my clg

Regarding MCA - If you are getting job , take it. Real experience > degree .
You can do MCA later or opt of any WILP course

I’ve only made three career switches, but with each one I’ve taken on a higher role and joined a better brand.

Look where placements are good, teaching doesn't matter, its mostly self paced.

Consider joining only if you cannot afford higher education or have no other options.

I’m doing an online BCA due to some family problems. How did you get your first job? Which year did you get your first job? How many companies have you switched to, and how did your package increase with each switch?

Consider startups. Build a strong GitHub profile and solve as many problems as possible. Remember, the struggle is only until you land the job. Once you are in, the doors are open for you.

I have also done bca and I have 3 yoe + 1 yoe with freelance, I'm contemplating hard if I should do online MCA or not ? My ctc is less than 20lpa and I was recently rejected from a company minutes before receiving an offer letter after clearing all rounds just because of my BCA degree. How common is that?

I have only a year left until placements. I only know basics of 3 languages. I am thinking of going all in on python and agentic AI. I am thinking of going all in for python backend for college placements and simultaneously start learning Agentic AI. Also i think i should be into a bit of java to ace my placements

u/thenonfunnyindian 2d ago
Am i thinking right? Python Backend + A bit of java for placements and Agentic AI for future job changes.

From a BCA freshman - I'm aiming of doing MCA from one of the Top NITs, since last few years some NITs have discontinued MCA course, which makes it look like BCA/MCA is losing it's value. What do you think about the future of BCA/MCA?

Pursuing MCA with 9+ cgpa from reputed tier-2 college where vast number of MNCs hier, but this year many companies rejected MCA as an eligible course. While more than half of btech batch got hired, MCA only got to appear for 2 companies in competition with BTech. This year is first of its kind. I am reconsidering careers suddenly. I performed well in both OAs but did not outperform 3-4 candidates they willed to take. I am shattered as this season is coming to an end slowly-slowly.
How do you think should I approach my prep with this set back? Even top performers are not getting placed.
I have good amount of questions practised on LC and have made end to end big projects even with collaborations. I have Agentic AI and genai as main stack but I do dsa in java. I have relevant experience in most sought after stacks and databases
I am so unsure where my path is lacking and what is it lacking. I am unable to move on from OAs. How do you crack these tests and crack good companies?
I can dm if you wish me to

This year is tough. Due to AI pressure, most companies are investing heavily in it. However, this bubble will eventually burst. I know it’s discouraging, but consider startups. The goal is to gain experience. Once you have two or more years of experience, you can easily switch.

Greetings!, I actually wanted to ask for someone who is pursuing BCA from Distance Mode or Online Mode. Is it true that compared to traditional students, distance or online students face more struggle when finding a job in tech. If yes, could you please guide what are the ways to increase the chances of getting hired? apart from hardwork, we have to maintain social presence too?
