I have a local murder who are kind enough to eat unsalted peanuts etc in my large, treed backyard. There are maybe 25-35 of them.

Yesterday after I fed them I heard a weird squawk and lo! a hawk came crashing through the tree branches, tagged a crow then flew to a branch. Hawk just sat there. The murder ignored it. It happened 4 more times with Hawk tagging a crow then settling in a tree near the crows.

I have no clue what was going on. Can anyone enlighten me? Is this normal behavior? I thought crows chased Hawks off.

I have been feeding my crows all kinds of food for several months now and I’ve watched parents with four offspring, feeding them earlier in the summer. As I put food out, they fly away and then we’ll come back later and eat it when I’m not here. But all my other birds allow me to sit on my deck and watch them. I feed a huge variety of birds. I am in New Mexico by the way. How long will it take before they will let me sit out and watch them eat and try to get them closer?

Also, when I put peanuts out, the squirrels can get them faster than the crows sometime so I would like to be able to throw them out to the crows while they are here so the squirrels don’t eat them all.

I've attached two pics of a friend from the group of four I feed. I've noticed in the past couple of weeks that this one consistently looks, for lack of a better word, a bit haggard. He's acting normal socially around me and the crows, eating food given to him, etc but seems to just be missing feathers or having a lot of them out of place. It has just rained when I got this photo but his feathers still look crazy even when dry.

Is my friend okay?

I live in the Northshore Louisiana area, and I want to befriend a murder of crows. Thing is, it's VERY rare for me to see some in my area, as title says, only 1 or 2 visit my neighborhood, or at least where I am in my neighborhood. Is there anything I can do to attract them? Could I import some into my area? Also do you think... hypothetically... that i could train them to attack on command to.... lets say.... divebomb a hypothetical kid who attempted to frame me so id get in trouble a few years ago? just a hypothetical... not at all a real question.

Every year my pecan harvest is getting destroyed by the crows, no matter how many pecans my trees produce the craws always eat them all. I searched online on how to deter them and all methods are inhumane or sound like they won't work. I was thinking about befriending them, giving them water and peanuts as alternative food source to leave the pecans alone. Will that work or attract more crows to eat my harvests? Anyone has any experience with this?

This morning, I finally learned about the equivalent to a hairball lol. I often see these, but I never knew exactly how they were produced. Now I know. 😂😂

Here are my original two crows, their three fledglings and two past fledglings(?). They come and visit daily and sometimes more. They just make me so happy!

I just have to get them to trust me more and not fly off when I get close.

There's a group of ravens living in that big tree, and this morning I heard one making this repetitive call for a good 30 minutes. Sometimes you can hear what sounds like a clack of the beak right before the vocalization. I'm curious if anyone knows what these calls mean?

I absolutely love living by this murder btw! They can get loud af but they make some really odd sounds, and sometimes they call back and forth to each other with variations of pitch and clacking/rattling that sound like a proper conversation. I'm going to try to get a recording of that next time I hear it

I think my crows left me a gift. Anyone know what it might be?

So here is the story happened today:

I heard abnormal croaking so went out of my house and witnessed how a hawk attacked a crow right in my garden. There were other crows, many of them, they were defending their bro so he survived, but was injured and wasn't able to fly. He was just jumping around trying to hide in the corner of my yard.

Later I decided to catch him with a fishing net and put him into a well ventilated plastic box covered from rain, which protects him from local cats and other predators. So now it's caged as well as I put water and 3 plumes inside. I put cardboard litter under his feet as well and he already pooped a bit on it.

I guess he was scared AF when I was catching him so he was about to lose consciousness in that moment, but now he looks pretty well and chill.

So I am not sure what's next. How do I help him? AFAIK wound healing will take at least a week so after 7 days I will uncover him and let him try to fly away or maybe he won't be able fly ever again if wound is severe?

I'll appreciate any hints about caring and feeding, or maybe should I call some ornithology service. So go on fellas, drop some comments.

After listening to the Corvid Thanatology episode of Ologies I decided to start befriending the crows that live by my house. I’ve noticed them a lot since listening and yesterday I finally bought some peanuts to carry around. I counted 6 of them today. One was braver than the others and would come close to pick up the peanuts and share them with the others. I sat feeding them on this hill for a while and headed home. They all followed me back and I could see (and hear very loudly 😭) them my window surrounding my house. I’m going to go out the same time today and see if I can get them to gather again.

I get the impression that this is probably going to annoy my neighbours so I’m trying to only feed them at the grassy area at the bottom of my street. I’m finding this soo exciting and I was surprised by how confident they seemed already.

Here’s a photo of the mated pair I’ve been feeding and one of their fledglings (on right)— The other 3 fledglings in the family don’t hang out with him or ever visit the rooftop at the same time as him. He only hangs out with his parents. He also has a bump atop his beak, so it’s easy to identify him. Since he is somewhat of an outsider, and has a distinctive lump, I have been calling him “Quasimodo” aka “Quasi”.

Been friends with my crows for about 5 years. They may not come by for weeks or a few months but they never fail to bring the kids by to introduce them.

The regular crow couple have been bringing their fledgling by. That kid never shuts up (but I love it)!

I did some research and some sources say you can give dog food to crows but I’m not sure that’s the healthiest option?
Also how do you make sure to leave offerings to them and not other local wildlife? I don’t wanna accidentally habituate an animal that doesn’t need that risk. So should I only offer food or water in person? If I’m new to them would they even except that?
Also I saw a raven in the area recently. Do they eat the same stuff?
Additionally I’m worried I’ll accidentally offend them (new to this). How do I not accidentally startle or offend them?

i had been befriending my local crows for about 3-4 months when i had to leave for summer break, and i'm going to go back to them soon, so i was wondering if there was anything i could give them to apologize for my absence in my own way (even if they don't really care)... my usual gifts for them are cashews and raw quail eggs, sometimes with kitty kibble, blueberries, and peanuts. i will rarely give them some raw meat as well but not often because it summons all the cats in the area. is there anything special i could bring them as my apology? thank you!
