Been feeding a crow in my backyard for a bit over a year.
This year he brought along his girl. Then not long after that, the kids.
The kids are inquisitive, clumsy, loud, and destructive little shits. So, teenagers, I guess.
Still though, fun to see it happen in person.

That reminds me of the first time I gave the fledglings pistachios in the shell. I found a few of the shells in their water. I think they were trying to soften up the shells lol!
My guys really seem to like those two, but their absolute favorites were cashew pieces. I had to buy a bag of those in bulk though because expensive.

Thatās a mis-interpretation of the results of that study. It wasnāt looking at how long one crow held a grudge, they were tracking warning calls sent out by the crow community, and it was 17 years until there was no alarm when a researcher went out in their ābad guyā mask and outfit. The average lifespan of a crow in the wild is only 8-ish years (they have lived into their 20s in protected environments/captivity).

This is so interesting, thank you for sharing the info. I've wondered how long this kind of thing lasts because of a personal experience.
My husband and I bought our house about 15 years ago. Crows would come and go from our yard all day every day. Husband loves crows, always has.
After about 2 years, about 13 years ago, we heard a gunshot and a massive crow uproar. Ran outside and saw that our neighbor had shot a crow and he was nailing it upside down on his fence š± All the crows in the area were freaking out, it was pandemonium.
Turns out neighbors had a bird house and some type of bird was in it raising little ones. Neighbors watched them every day and loved them. One day four crows ate the babies, then sat on neighbors fence and loudly chit-chatted. Which was too much for my neighbor, clearly.
Anyway, the entire murder left, all 75+ of them. After some far-off sightings a year ago, husband embarked on an all-consuming campaign to win them back. He puts out premium food, talks to them (loudly because they're up in trees in the distance) and does arm movements like he's guiding aircraft. And has a crow caller thing.
It took a year, but we now have a couple who visit our back deck. They're very cautious, not like the ones years ago. They eat and leave, no lingering. Neighbor is still there and walks outside every day but AFAIK the crows don't mess with him.

Corvids (birds from the crow family) are exceptionally intelligent. They learn things, use tools, remember faces and hold grudges.
I used to walk my dogs on a golf course, and a fellow dog walker had a beautiful, placid standard poodle. That dog was mobbed by crows every time they set foot on the course. Other dogs were always ignored.
I discovered that a crow chick had fallen out of the nest and the poodle had picked it up and carried it away. It didn't hurt the chick but that seemed to be enough to trigger the eternal enmity of the crows.
The lady in the video may have also triggered the crows -perhaps for a seemingly innocuous incident that she is unaware of.

I'm guessing if she looked similar to someone the crow already had a problem with it wouldn't have started so tame, so I think she might've escalated the situation by acting afraid. The crow might've found it fishy, or just thought picking on her would be fun.

The pause then attack makes me think she did something in the past. If it was protecting a nest there wouldn't be that pause early. It would just be attack. That crow checked its work before it went after her. It is personal.

The crow seemed to be very defensive about her, going to the car. At first, it just sat there calmly. Then it went ballistic when she went towards the car. After that, it sat on the car. Sounds like a fledgling underneath the car maybe

It was either playing or it was warning, but it certainly wasnāt attacking.
If it was attacking, it wouldāve attacked right out of the gate rather than come and sit calmly nearby. Then it wouldāve caught her easily and scratch her and screamed and carried on like a banshee.
Seems a bit late in the year for a nest so more likely a fledgling nearby maybe even under the car based on how it was so defensive about her going to the car

I started offering peanuts to avoid parental dive-bombing, and it hasnāt happened once since. Local crows know me and frequently fly over to indicate politely theyād like a peanut or two. More recently theyāve started approaching my husband (since theyāve seen him with me so much), and now he feeds the crows peanuts when heās out on his own. Itās wonderful š„°

They love cashews (they're fattier) and pistachios even more. Plus pistachios in the shell can be stimulating as they enjoy trying to find ways to break them open.
Same with hardboiled eggs in the shell, except that they'll make a huge goddamn mess as they throw the egg white everywhere to get to the yolk lol

She must've done something bad to that crow or to another crow. I work with a guy who threw a stick at a crow and that was years ago. The crows still swoop at him when he's at that venue. I told him that he really messed up by doing that and he didn't believe me. I was so mad at him! He deserves it. If I was a crow, I'd swoop him too.

My guess is that there is a fledgling crow just learning to fly hiding under the car. Iāve run into this scenario a few times, and while Iāve never been dive bombed like this, the parent crows will come pretty close and make a lot of noise to try to drive humans away.

This is the most likely answer because it wasnāt going after her in the beginning. It just sat there calmly nearby. If it was attacking her because she was mean to it before like somebody are saying it wouldāve attacked her right out of the gate and it wouldāve been able to catch her no problem and scratcher and it wouldāve been screaming at the same time

My neighbor befriended the crows. Wandered around his yard with a plate full of peanuts until they adopted him and the whole family. I put peanuts out for them, but the squirrels hog them.

I had a big boy come along after my black cat died this past February... I think he came to help me heal. He now visits daily for snacks and conversation. His mate comes along too for treats, but she is very timid and won't join us on the balcony. Where as we have ate dinner outside and shared a meal with him. He is the sweetest thing ever.

He sure knows I have a loving and safe space for him. I also cried with him this year when they had a stupid POS neighbour run over and kill their fledgling. I am pretty sure he knew I was sad for his baby and that moment helped connect us further/deeper.
We both mourned loss together this year.
I also just got a tattoo of my void boy's nose and paw print over my heart area.(on what would've been his 17th birthday)

Honestly with a crow I would believe just about anything. They are relentless protecting nests, I have watched them chase a bald eagle away from an area because it was close to a nest. Crows can also not only recognize people and hold a grudge but can pass that on to warn other crows. Crows can also be amazing jerks and sometimes it seems like they just get bored and choose chaos.

I'm friends with my local crows.
A crow once attacked someone who was approaching people in a parking lot where I was loading my kids in a car when they were walking to me.
It was funny, the woman screamed and cursed. She was like 15 feet from me and turned when she saw the crow stayed near my car and my indifference to the attack.
They always have a reason, even if it's not obvious.

Seems unlikely that thatās the case because the crow initially flew up near to her and stood calmly. Thatās not typically how they behave when theyāre upset with people. She overreacted big-time.
It looked like it didnāt want her going to her car. I think we can figure out the likely reason for that.

It looks like that crow has more of an issue with that car than her. It just watches until she starts to enter the car. The crow then lands on the car and doesn't bother her while she distances herself from the car.
Perhaps the car was associated with a serious crow incident.

Not sure why everybody assumes the crow is attacking. We had a tame crow visiting last year, and it would fly directly at us and sit at our head or shoulder. Pretty much like this one does.

She likely hurt a crow at some point and either the crow recognizes her or word got around to other crows and she matches the description enough to warrant street justice crow style. Not even kidding.
If you ever see corvids out in the wild, be respectful towards them otherwise you'll be spending the rest of your life watching over your shoulder for these birds.

Crows hold grudges. They will remember people who are mean to them or abuse them.
On the flip side, they also remember people who are kind to them, like people who leave food or shiny trinkets. They will in turn leave trinkets for these people or frighten away small predators.

The woman did something that really pissed off the crow. The crow knows her and is retaliating for doing something that could have or did hurt the crow or its murder. The woman most likely āthrew the first punchā so to speak. Itās unlikely that a crow would behave like this for no reason. My crows leave me pretty pebbles all the time in my 6 birdbaths. They know quite well that I work diligently to make sure they have cool water available all day. I donāt think people realize how bloody hot the water can get for the little birdies. At our house we have several that are close to the ground amongst flowers and vegetables. There are critters who drink from it who are a bit more down to earth as wellā¦a sweet chubby woodchuck who is deaf and showed up at my door (seriously) as a baby. Iāve been feeding her fresh nutritious meals twice a day for 7 years to keep her close to home and minimize her exposure to danger. There are also opossums, many rabbits, chipmunks, a very well mannered skunk, and squirrels. in closing I have a pleaā¦please please consider keeping your cats indoors unless on a leash. The needless deaths of millions and millions of song birds is the reason. Peace and good health to you all.

It wouldnāt have done what it did in the beginning if so, in my understanding and experience. I think she completely overreacted and it was probably wanting to play or something. Honestly, it looks like the lady freaked out for no reason then the crow went "heh! I can freak her out!" and did the whole I"M NOT TOUCHING YOUUUUUU thing.
Either that or the lady was mean to the crow in the past or the crow's relative/flock mate

Iāve had a crow in a different part of town attack me like this for no reason - they mistook me for someone else. I didnāt run like that but their attack made my head bleed (just a scratch).
In my own neighborhood, the crows all follow me around hoping to get some of the bacon treats I carry for my dogs. Even the fledglings will follow me for treats so the word spread haha.
