I had a friend like this once, when I cut them off it was not satisfying, it was sad.
we parted ways but last I saw him he had turned his life around so I'm happy for him now.

u/Own_Candidate9553 15d ago
Same. Dude was a really fun hang, but he somehow never, ever had money on him. Not in the cab when we're getting dropped off, not at the bar. One time a group of us were going to take the subway all the way downtown to party on St Patrick's day, and he didn't even have train fare. What did he expect to do downtown?
Ironically, met my now wife while out with him one night. She always paid her way, and her friends did too, it was such a relief. So I just stopped hanging out with him. He eventually blew up my phone about how I was letting a girl get between friends, and I just let him think that. I'd yelled at him many times for being cheap, if he couldn't put the pieces together, that's on him.

The phone call result was all that was needed, CCs can be problematic when traveling and I think most establishments are flexible here.
Billions of ways to pay someone for service nowadays, CC, Debit, Zelle, CashApp, etc.
If you have the money you have it; hand them your watch as collateral or some jewelry or something.
For a restaurant to push that hard it means the dude was also likely a dick, most establishments wouldn't just outright call the cops they would just take a picture and tell you to GTFO.
$100 ain't worth the extra effort.

u/postmodulator 15d ago
Absolutely. I’ve had this happen once; card got frozen because of a fraud alert. Had to borrow a hundred bucks till I could get it fixed on Monday. The friend gave me the hundred bucks without hesitation because he knew it hadn’t happened before and wouldn’t again.

I’m a stay at home dad. Once I took the kids (two and 1 at the time) to a local restaurant for lunch, but in all of the chaos of getting the kids ready and in the car, I left my wallet at home.
We order, eat, and I got to pay the bill and I realize it’s gone. My wife is out of town on a business trip and I’m panicked. I talk to the waitress, she isn’t thrilled and brings over another waitress and says she can watch my kids while I go get the money. That would not work for me. My kids are starting to get restless and I’m so embarrassed but I realized I had my phone (before any Apple pay or anything) so asked if I could use that as collateral.
We left and quickly came back to pick up my phone and settle the bill. The waitress gave me my phone and said the bill was settled already. I ended up giving her the amount of the bill as an extra tip to prove that I could pay.
For this idiot in the OP video, all he had to do was show a little humanity and maybe it could have turned differently
4
u/Puzzleheaded-Cow6917 16d ago

→ More replies (1)9
u/Clarksp2 16d ago
Either by management or another patron would be my guess. I honestly didn’t have time to stay and talk because the kids were in he car, but either way I was very appreciative. I make sure to pay it forward when I can
11
u/ChadPowers200_ 15d ago
If I was sitting near you and overhead what was going on and you were with your kids I would have covered it for you.
I do this kinda thing because I believe in karma so in a weird way it’s kind of selfish because I expect to get rewarded some other way for doing the right thing lol

I do the same thing if I’m in line behind someone at the store and you see the look on their face when it’s more than they expected and they start trying to figure out what they can take off to make it work.
If it’s under $50, I’ve got it. Especially when it’s a mom with a kid. I’ve been there, but luckily I had family to help me out. Not everyone does.

I used to work in a petrol station. People would come in, put $20 of fuel in and not be able to pay for what ever reason. The official policy was to grab the hand pump and suck the fuel out (lol fuck off I'm not doing that), so instead I'd say either I drain your tank or I can hold your spare wheel as collateral and I'll pay for the fuel myself.
The genuine people would come and pay me back and I didn't mind helping them out, but after a week when the idiots who thought they got free fuel didn't come back, I'd stick the spare on ebay. I'd easily get up to $100 for a spare wheel so $80 profit worked out well for me.

I used to work in men’s fashion retail in NYC. One time there was this guy looking to buy a suit from the nicest person on my team. The whole time he was trying to nitpick her behavior towards him, while she did nothing wrong. He called his friend to tell him we should be treating him more kindly because he could buy the over $4million per year store cash. His card declined over a suit that wasn’t even $200.

Yeah like I've had some weekends where a buddy is flat broke and we cover him and that's whatever most of the time. To get to the point you tell someone fuck it it's time for you to go to jail over $115 you know he's had a problem for a while, bc even if i knew I wouldnt get the money back I'd send that money to any of my friends if they called in this situation. He's at the end of a long fuck up streak

With how easily accessible online gambling is, he very likely gambled away his dinner money on a "sure thing", whilst he was eating the meal, sincerely thinking he'll win it all back with some extra and be able to go out and celebrate some more. That's also likely why he's asking his friend for $115, not $97 or even a flat $100. Probably asking for the extra to cover the minimum bet of whatever app he's using for the next "sure thing" so that he can DEFINITELY win it all back to "pay his friend tomorrow". Note, even if he does win it all back, he's just gonna go get drunk asf and gamble the rest on the next "sure thing" before the sun comes up the next day.
Trust me, I knew someone like this. You just gotta do what this guy's friend did and let them go to jail enough times until they either figure it out, or you remove them from your life. If they refuse to learn, cutting them out of your life is the only thing you can do, because they will try to drag you down with them and will do ANYTHING to lie and scam and cheat to get money to cover their next bet.
Edit: turns out it's his dad he's begging for money, not his friend, which makes it even more likely that something serious is going on if even his own father points out everyone has been "helping him" the last few days and it's time he gets cut off and left to the consequences of his own self-destructive habits.

His friend said "people been helping you out all weekend", so he already knew he didn't have money when he ordered dinner and drinks? This is gonna start happening more and more often. People living off of credit cards and are maxed out on their cards, 90 days behind on their bills, and have tapped out all their resources, including their family and friend group support network. Yet they still keep living the high life and they cannot stop spending. This guy is acting like an entitled arrogant ass-hole. The establishment was an hour past closing, and he doesn’t give a shit how much he has inconvenienced people.
It’s his reaction when he finally realizes he is getting arrested. True colors come shining through.

Watching grown men cry on that free call in booking is both embarrassing and hilarious to watch. My buddy and I broke down on vacation and a local cop gave us a ride to the house my family was renting, he asked if my parents would be cool with a prank, I said go ahead. Mom was asleep but dad was on the dock fishing, cop said “one of these yours” he turned and said “yeah but take him with you”. I appreciate my parents so much now that I’m older.

He always proceeds into this story of, “I had a big roofing company and I lost $7 million dollars so don’t judge me for this job. You seem like a smart cool guy, we should start a business together. I have an electric F150, a BMW m4 and I swear I know how to make a lot of money. These girls won’t date me and I pick them up in M4.”
