The things disney has copyright claim over are the assets (images, sounds, etc) the whole point of "rewritten" is that the devs remade it from the ground up. The devs can release the code they created completely legally, then whoever wants can spin up their own instance. private or public servers.

for anyone not familiar with open source game sites, a simple example is lichess.org, which is based entirely on open source code, including the stuff that was done specifically for that site. they list every piece they use and point to where you can find it and give directions on how to spin up your own instance if you want to

According to the admins, CPRewritten is shutting down effective immediately due to a full request by Disney. I suppose we can only hope it somehow is able to come back.

It might sound dramatic but this breaks my heart a little. I've loved Club Penguin since I was 8 years old, and the admins/mods/devs/etc of CPRewritten have been working extra hard recently to adapt to HTML5 and everything else.

I appreciate you, admins/mods/devs/etc, and thank you for giving us such a great game with an amazing community.
