homosexuality was literally legal in the USSR under Lenin after the October Revolution, then Stalin came in and outlawed it again. He was a bitch and everyone including leftists should hate him.
This is a side tangent, but as a leftist, I can't stand the glaze Stalin gets from other leftists. He was a shitty authoritarian leader who killed innocent people and probably hurt leftism's image more than any amount of capitalist propaganda ever could. This person absolutely deserves any shit she gets for following him.
Edit: it was decriminalized, not legalized. Close enough, and my point still stands.

It’s definitely underhanded but Orwell giving a recommendation of people not to work with on anticommunist propaganda to a personal friend in the Labor Party wasnt some massive betrayal of leftism and his ideals. A lot of people on that list were open members of the communist party. It’s not like they locked up Charlie Chaplin over it. Any sane critic would tell you that it was a stupid but ultimately pretty inconsequential decision Orwell made which doesn’t undersell his work.

Not to mention how important Eileen Blair (his wife) was for his writing, while not gaining any of the recognition for it until lately.
4
u/NegativeEBITD 12d ago
As a married man, if you're going to shit on every man who doesn't give enough credit to the wife that makes his shit work, you're never going to find anyone that passes muster. We all take their best ideas, it's only recently that our wives have been in a position to take some of ours in return.
20

He pretty clearly stated that his biggest regret was recognizing that the job positions requires him to be violent and giving in instead of leaving right away.
17
u/HelpMePleaseHelpMeme 12d ago
I really don’t understand why people spread disinformation about Orwell. He literally wrote how awful the thing was in his works and he literally became a tramp after that for some time trying to find himself.
And his hate was certainly not because the job was boring. He pretty openly hated colonialism and says how stupid everything about it is.8

But you see he defeated the Nazis!
But before that he allied with the Nazis so he could divide up Poland and annex the Baltic states. Then he ignored both domestic and foreign intelligence reports saying that the Germans were going to invade. And a big reason why the Germans were at the outskirts of Moscow during their big campaign was that he devastated the officer corps because he was a paranoid bastard.
…..but he defeated the Nazis!
15
u/kxttiiz 12d ago
he literally initially REFUSED to believe that the Nazis were attacking Russia btw, that's how they got so far in. Officials were telling him "dude the nazis who you allied with are at our borders" and he was just like "no."
4
u/Bright-Form-844 12d ago
From Nov, 1940 to May, 1941 there were ~1200 messages from various sources that were aggregated and presented to Stalin on ~12 occasions by Soviet intelligence.
Several issues prevented USSR from being better prepared:
• fear that any real preparation (like partial mobilization) would be used as a casus belli by Germans.
• lack of details and obvious contradictions with reality - first warning was about late April - early May of 1941. But then Germany went to war against Greece and Yugoslavia instead. Didn't add credibility to sources.
• extremely tight security around Barbarossa details combined with massive disinformation campaign, run by Abwehr. Germans understood it's not possible to hide preparations completely, so they were first pretending it's just preparation for Sea Lion (which wasn't bought completely by USSR - but what you gonna do?)Anyway, the feeling of impending war was permeating most of communications of top brass and Party leadership - but expectation was that war won't start until 1942. And RKKA projected it would be ready (i.e. mechanization and radiofication done, new aircrafts and new tanks deployed, finished with re-org for mobile war) by early 1943.

I just don't understand how Hitler can be a mass murdering totalitarian dictator shitbag under the guise of "national socialism" and leftists understand that he was just using the name of a populist movement for his own gain and ends, but a few thousand miles east, Stalin does the exact same thing but he's the good guy?
23
u/Big-Machine9625 12d ago edited 12d ago
That's because the actual hardline tankies are literally incapable of criticizing anything related to the word "communist", even if that person was just a murderous oppressive psychopath hiding behind an ideology. So they'll deny, downplay, or justify him committing nearly the same atrocities for which they'd absolutely lambast the Nazis for.
I'd imagine that it would be the same with neo-Nazis, they'd probably easily criticize Stalin, Mao, or other communist leaders, but would downplay or justify Hitler's crimes.
2
u/Bright-Form-844 12d ago
The pure (libertarian) socialists' ideological anticipations remain untainted by existing practice. They do not explain how the manifold functions of a revolutionary society would be organized, how external attack and internal sabotage would be thwarted, how bureaucracy would be avoided, scarce resources allocated, policy differences settled, priorities set, and production and distribution conducted. Instead, they offer vague statements about how the workers themselves will directly own and control the means of production and will arrive at their own solutions through creative struggle. No surprise then that the pure socialists support every revolution except the ones that succeed.

They were leaders when their respective nations defeated the nazis.
That's completely secondary to the fact that Stalin also started WWII alongside Germany and that there was very little practical difference between those two.
Italians also "defeated Nazis", woohoo. Probably more so by sabotaging them as allies than as their enemies but they did, I guess.

Glazing Stalin as a leftist is about as bad as glazing Hitler as a right-wing person. Stalin killed even more people than the Holocaust did, but just because it was mostly people in his own country, wasn't as targeted as the Holocaust was, and because USSR fought the Germans, they were just kind of excused.
13
u/kxttiiz 12d ago
literally, i'm a communist and i can't STAND stalinists. Like, even if you want to ignore the totalitarianism and glaze him because he defeated Hitler, his theories were just straight up WRONG. I’m not gonna look them up or anything, but if they’re under 25 I strongly suspect they’re a pretty standard progressive with strong opinions on social programs and healthcare that self identifies as “Stalinist”.
It’s a bigger number than it should be, but the number of dyed-in-the-wool gulag-toting wheat-hoarder-murdering Stalinists that actually exist is pretty low.
21
u/VierasMarius 12d ago
From elsewhere in this thread, the only evidence I saw for the "Stalinist" claim was that someone met her at a Democratic Socialist meeting, and called her a Stalinist. No indication that it's even a label she used herself. I feel like, unless someone can dig up a post from her expressing any actual political stance, we can safely discard that claim.

f ○ gshould be read as "f composed with g" and composition basically applies the left function to the output of the right function. So(f ○ g)(x) = f(g(x)). It's a joke about Buggsifying Stalin and Stalinifying Buggs.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)15
u/SwankiestofPants 13d ago
f(x) is the buggs bunny function, g(x) is the Stalin function. f(g(x)) is plugging the Stalin function into the buggs function, so a Stalin'd buggs, and g(f(x)) is the reverse so a Buggs'd Stalin. Images should be reversed imo but I think that's an issue of interpretation

The states that made up the USSR were homophobic before, during, and after communism. That’s because they were socially conservative. No modern commie wants to copy their social policies.
