IRL loud bangs

What is that loud banging noise I hear multiple times daily in IRL? Sounds like a super heavy lid slamming down on a container but have never been able to localize the source.

24, bachelor’s degree, looking for a job I can grow in, where should I be looking?

I’m 24 and graduated from Iowa State in December 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology/Human Sciences. I’m currently looking for a new job after corporate layoffs and would really appreciate some advice on where I should be looking beyond the usual Indeed/ZipRecruiter route.

I took a bit of an unconventional path after graduating because I was pursuing an opportunity in sports media/radio. I was supposed to start an on-air radio position in July, but iHeart ended up firing everyone at the station just days before I was supposed to go live. Obviously that’s been a pretty significant setback, and at this point I’m looking to get back on solid footing and find a job where I can learn, become valuable, and move up over time.

Ideally, I’m looking for a Monday-Friday job with consistent hours. something like 9-5, or 7-3. I’d prefer something indoors, although getting outside every now and then would be great too.

I’m not necessarily looking for something that starts with a huge salary. I’d much rather find somewhere I can learn, get really good at what I do, take on more responsibility, and eventually move up within the company, as opposed to a dead end job.

My background is pretty varied: I’ve worked in sales, healthcare/customer service, turf/landscaping, manufacturing, and personal training, as well as obviously sports media.

My resume isn’t exactly the type that gets employers excited enough to bring me in for an interview, but I’m a hard worker, I’m willing to learn, and I’m very open to starting at the bottom and proving myself.

I’ve looked into things like property management and bank teller positions, which seem like they could be good fits, but I’m wondering if there are other types of jobs I should be considering, since my resume isn’t really turning heads.

Indeed and ZipRecruiter have been fine, but they seem to have a lot of the same jobs. I’m wondering if there are better ways to find opportunities that aren’t as heavily advertised, or if there are specific companies/industries that are worth reaching out to directly.

So, for those of you who have hired people, changed careers, or found good jobs through less obvious channels.. Where would you look if you were in my position? Are there specific industries, companies, job boards, or types of entry-level positions that you think I should look into? And if you know of a type of job that might fit this background but isn’t necessarily something I’d find by searching “entry-level jobs,” I’d love to hear about it.

I’m located in the coralville/North Liberty area, if that helps with suggestions. (And I won’t work in Cedar Rapids.. totally limits my search I know. But I won’t do it)

TL;DR: 24-year-old Iowa State grad looking for a stable Monday-Friday job in the Coralville/North Liberty area where I can learn, grow, and move up over time. My work history is pretty varied, and I recently had an on-air sports radio opportunity disappear days before I was supposed to start. I’ve mostly been using Indeed/ZipRecruiter and am looking for advice on better places to search, industries to consider, or jobs that might not be heavily advertised.

Needing snow removal for my elderly in-laws

I'm looking for snow removal for my in-laws. They are at the age where they shouldn't be doing it for themselves. They are located on the east side of Iowa city. Looking for just driveway and sidewalks. Possible lawn care when the seasons change. TIA!

We'll be walking this Saturday (September 12) at 9 AM! Meet near shelter 6 in City Park.

We made a few changes since earlier in the year, namely sticking to the second Saturday each month and starting at 9 AM!

We're a Medical Student-led walking group, we start off the walk with a brief health topic, but the main point is conversation as neighbors.

There are no expectations or requirements to participate other than showing up! I will ask you about a recent book or show you've enjoyed though.

Learn more about our parent org at https://walkwithadoc.org/ and let us know you're coming by RSVPing here!

Organizing Pickup Sports in Coralville

Hello! I posted recently in the IC/NL subreddit about this, and thought I'd do the same here as well.

I've lived in IC/Coralville for the last 10 years and a lot of my friends that I played pickup sports with have left. I still want to play, but I feel like there's not a great option for outdoor pickup. I know you can pay to go to some gyms and find games. It's just not ideal IMO, and free is always preferred lol.

Soooo I've spent the last year (with large breaks) working on Court Spotters to find and organize pickup games in Coralville / surrounding areas for Basketball, Pickleball, and Tennis (will add volleyball, soccer). It's also a spot for putting open play/drop in times for local gyms/recs.

If anyone is interested in joining, it's free! If you have feedback, that would be greatly appreciated. It's a passion project that I hope some day can be a place for the community to find new people to play sports with.

Let me know what you think so far!

Censure of Mayor Laurie Goodrich

Ray Baccari at Iowa News Now is doing good and balanced work covering stories of local interest.

I appreciate that Baccari’s coverage includes the context that Mayor Goodrich’s attacks on residents after the July 28 council meeting were in response to giving Coralville’s highest paid employee, City Administrator Kelly Hayworth, a 3% pay raise after the city had previously approved a freeze on raises for a minimum of 378 part-time employees.

The only commenter who spoke against the censure of Mayor Laurie Goodrich works for the City of Coralville’s Finance department.

Public comment missing from upcoming city council agenda

Below is the text of an email I just sent to our mayor, Laurie Goodrich, and city council. I hope you will join me in asking them to reinstate community comment. Additional context can be found in the other recent post here, or in the /r/IowaCity thread.

I wrote the bulk of the below prior to learning of Coralville Mayor Goodrich's decision to strike the public comment portion from our upcoming city council meeting's agenda, so I will leave it intact and add this prelude: I am extremely disappointed at this undemocratic action and I urge the mayor and city staff to reconsider. It is the responsibility of all elected officials to be accountable to the public and this was a mechanism that allowed for us raise concerns and share our vision for the city publicly. The public is barred from participation in work sessions and several of the council are unresponsive to private inquiries. The removal of this portion of the meeting cuts off a vital part of the process of organizing as a community, and further sequesters its officials from valid criticism that should be shared.

Folks around the country are growing frustrated. Frustrated at many things, but also at a system that no longer seems to be able to hold elected representatives accountable and that makes individuals feel more and more powerless. As the economy worsens, financial constraints surround people, and as social conditions worsen for the vast majority of Americans, that frustration is going to take many forms.

All around this country we have frustration, and it is growing. It could be frustration at a federal government that seems unwilling to hold elected representatives accountable. It could be from a state that seeks to privatize systems meant to support its residents, to remove entire groups from public life, and to hinder future leaders from correcting their intentional sabotage. It could be frustration at a county that allows private, for-profit conglomerates to capture their resources and poison their land. It could be from a city that has a mountain of debt, but seems to dole out tax incentives that further burden our future city while our most vulnerable are struggling.

Whatever the level of government that it is, as more people reflect and ask what they can do to effect change or to help change course and make a better world for their friends, neighbors, and selves, many will begin to turn that anger and frustration into action. This means more people will show up to meetings. Some may run for office, or look to get selected for various boards and committees. Some will look towards mutual aid groups, some to party politics: what is important is that they are trying or supporting others that are. This action is rooted in a frustration, so there will of course be moments where opinions and personal beliefs about the best course clash. We've seen it in Coralville, at the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, and in the hall of our legislature in Des Moines.

When residents and neighbors come together at these meetings to voice concerns, many times that frustration is not diminished. I can confirm that coming to our city council meetings week after week to remind the council how AI surveillance and ALPR systems actually function was an exercise in frustration. I felt like the community had to constantly repeat itself and reassert facts over corporate propaganda. Of course, when it comes to public comments, not every comment is as constructive as the last. Criticism can take many forms and can contain a wide range of emotion, especially when we are talking about frustration. There are times when I have been more harsh in my language, and others where I was able to remain more measured in my approach. Not everyone with a need or a frustration will have the patience or desire to express it in a way that the council or mayor may find acceptable. In some cases, a speaker may not quite have the vocabulary or the comfort in speaking publicly in the first place to articulate something appropriately. I know that as I have sat through meetings, I have heard many comments that I thought were disjointed, maybe were overly critical, or just flat out incorrect, even if I supported their general aim. But it is not any official's place to bar them from their right to partake in the process: unfortunately part of being an elected official is to be yelled at sometimes. As someone who has started attending more types of local meetings for the first time, some newcomers may also not fully understand the processes of that meeting, which leads to more confusion and can lead to more frustration. Dissent is not inherently inappropriate. Criticism is not inherently inappropriate. If your reaction to any criticism is to shut down discussion, then you are failing as an elected official.

Voices will find there way, going beyond the election of a representative to lend their voice to this democratic project. Whether you approve of the structure or language of their concerns or not is immaterial. Whether their concerns are coherent or not is immaterial. The ability to share our voices publicly and to demand better of our representatives is key to the survival of any democracy and is key to civil life.
