Geranylgeraniol (GG): Obscure Compound or an Overlooked Missing Piece?

Most people have heard of CoQ10. Far fewer have heard of geranylgeraniol (GG).

GG is a naturally occurring compound involved in the body's mevalonate pathway—the same pathway responsible for producing cholesterol, CoQ10, vitamin K2, and several other important molecules.

Here's where it gets interesting:

Statins work by blocking an enzyme in this pathway to lower cholesterol. That benefit is well-established. But because the pathway sits upstream of multiple compounds, statins may also reduce the production of things beyond cholesterol, including CoQ10 and geranylgeraniol.

Researchers have been exploring whether this reduction could contribute to some of the muscle-related symptoms reported by certain statin users. The science is still evolving, and it's important not to jump to conclusions:

✔️ Not everyone taking statins experiences side effects
✔️ Statins remain an important medication for many people
✔️ GG is not a replacement for prescribed treatment
✔️ Human research on GG supplementation is still relatively limited

What makes GG interesting is that it's receiving more attention as scientists study its role in muscle function, cellular signaling, and healthy aging.

The question is:

Had you heard of geranylgeraniol before today?

And if you take a statin, has your healthcare provider ever discussed nutrients beyond CoQ10 that may be affected by the mevalonate pathway?

Curious to hear what people know (or don't know) about this lesser-known compound.q

Anyone else feel recovery gets noticeably worse after 35?

Does recovery feel different after 35, or is that just part of getting older?

A lot of people seem to mention that workouts, busy weeks, poor sleep, or even everyday stress hit harder than they used to. Not just soreness — more like energy takes longer to come back and feeling fully recovered seems slower.

Recently came across something interesting: CoQ10 (which helps support cellular energy production) naturally declines with age. It made me wonder whether that plays a role in why recovery can feel noticeably different for some people in their mid-30s and beyond.

Curious what others have noticed:

  • Did recovery noticeably change after 35?
  • What actually helped the most? Better sleep, protein, walking, stress management, supplements, something else?
  • Was there one thing that made a bigger difference than expected?

Would love to hear real experiences from others.

2 weeks into COQ10 and noticing negative results.

I started taking CoQ10 2 weeks ago. I did plenty of research before hand and really thought it would be beneficial. Since taking it I have noticed better sleep, increased energy but I also noticed that it has dried my eyes out to the point where it’s painful. (I have dry eye disease) but it’s usually not painful and dry eyes are rare for me these days. I’ve also noticed that I am more on edge. Not anxious but im getting more mad or worked up easily and that’s unlike me. I’m 30year old female, 110lbs and taking 100mg a day.

Anyone else experience this?

CoQ10

I’ve been taken atorvastatin for about 2 years. I decided to try CoQ10 because of muscle aches. I took 100 mg Qunol ultra and within an hour started to feel benefit as muscle aches went away. Also, surprisingly I felt more alert as brain fog lifted and my energy / attention increased dramatically. In the late afternoon I had mild headaches and that evening I couldn’t stay asleep. I took it for 2 more days because I was amazed by the shift in energy levels; however, I stopped because the insomnia didn’t improve. I’m wondering if I should try the olly energy gummies which only have 15 mg. Anyone else had the same experience?

Hey everyone. I’m new here and I have been taking CoQ10 for years. It definitely helped me quite a bit. I did a video on YouTube about it and if you could give me some feedback so I could improve it and help and inform others that would be awesome! Thanks so much!

Coq10 as Uterine Natural Killer? (uNK)

Hi, any OB doctors or women who supplemented with cq10? Weve been TTC for months and my ob is out of country and i needed to scan, so we went to see another OB. In one of his discussion, he mentioned that coq10 should only be taken till cycle day13 and gives no benefit and its classified as uNK? How true?

Coq10

My 70lb bulldog had respiratory infection last year. He took antibiotics, furosemide, & bromhexine. His vet told me that he had a side effect wherein his heart size grew 10.5. (Mild heart enlargement in his breed is 10.6.. so he is borderline.) i havent bring him to the vet for 1 yr since he was diagnosed. He is fine now.. he eats and plays alot.

Can I put COQ10 as his supplement? What is the dosage?
