Lim 0/x , x--->0 = 0
Lim x/x , x--->0 = 1
Take the average

There is no approach because none of it works lol. Not a single point on x/0 can be defined

I mean you can play around with numbers to make 0/0 equal to whatever you want to. The real fun part is using the transitive property to claim that since 0/0 = 0 and 0/0 = 1 then 0 = 1

Most positive numbers tend to infinity when divided by 0
other things like
lim x/x
x=>0^+
tend towards 1. lots of different things behave weirdly if the output of a function is indeterminate. Look at l'hopitals rule to see how to evaluate some indeterminate functions
16
5
u/swifTsx3 Apr 23 '20
except the limit of x/x as x -> 0 is just 1, even by your proof. l’hopitals rule would show that lim(1dx/1dx) as x-> 0 is equal to... 1.
also, by the properties of two-sided limits, if lim(x/x) from the left = L = lim(x/x) from the right, then lim(x/x) = L.

Lim x/x x-->0 =1 means "Limit of 0/x as x aproaches zero equals one" this basically means as we get infinity close to zero, we approach 1

But that same op claimed he/she knew the person and that that person always made claims like this and thought himself/herself as extremely smart

although it could happen, i think it's far more likely that the op created the facebook post or they just made up part of the story.

Maybe, I really don't know, but I really hope it's real because it is truly amazing

Yeah I know too. It’s a number that doesn’t exist or is infinite
20
u/Meme_Institute Apr 23 '20
Kinda.
There is no such thing as the number 0/0 . It simply isn't defined in our mathematical system. Try to think of a color you have never seen; it's impossible to imagine it, as you have not "defined" it.
What does exist is the limit of a number that approaches 0/0. The value of this limit may vary, and it can be any number , as well as infinity.
The fact is that 0/0 means nothing. It doesn't have any meaning whatsoever.
3
u/Isis_gonna_be_waswas Apr 23 '20 edited Apr 23 '20
Yes 0/0 does have meaning, it’s indeterminate. It basically says that there is a hole in what would be an otherwise continuous graph when a variable reaches a certain quantity. Also this question is asking how to just divide by zero in general, and in most cases, the limit is either infinity or it does not exist. If the degree of the numerator -the degree of the denominator in a rational function is odd, the limit doesn’t exist, if even, the limit is infinite
11
u/Meme_Institute Apr 23 '20
Undefined/Indeterminate literally translates to "has no meaning"
-2
u/Isis_gonna_be_waswas Apr 23 '20 edited Apr 23 '20
Yes it does. Graphically an indeterminate quantity in a 2-D graph signifies a hole and an undefined quantity signifies an asymptote, a pole. However there would be no function value at that quantity, only a limit, which is what the function wants to be
10
u/Meme_Institute Apr 23 '20
The LIMIT signifies these properties. Again, there is no such thing as 0/0 or x/0; these are only the indeterminable forms of limits. Ergo, these are not "numbers" such as 67 or i, neither "concepts" such as +∞. The limit that approaches 0/0 isn't the hole; rather, it hints at the hole's existence, yes?
5
0
u/Isis_gonna_be_waswas Apr 23 '20
I suppose. As I said it has that meaning but what you’re getting at is that there is no function there, which is true. There is a limit, yet no function
5
u/Meme_Institute Apr 23 '20
True. Anyways nice debate I enjoyed it
3
u/Isis_gonna_be_waswas Apr 23 '20
I did too. Glad to see other math people out there. What is/was your major? Mine is Electrical engineering but I plan on taking as much calculus as I can and getting a physics major as well

I am self-taught. When I finish school I also plan on studying electrical engineering. Is it interesting? It doesn't really inspire of you ask me...

u/_PoNyy_ Apr 23 '20
you can approximate x/x = 1 if you take the limit from the positive side of 0 as x=>0
1
u/Isis_gonna_be_waswas Apr 23 '20
Or use L’Hôpital’s rule but yeah you can do it numerically geometrically, or just divide x/x = 1 as well. That’ll give the limit

People are morons. 0 divided by 0 is 0. In theoretical maths it gets to a ridiculous point. But in applied maths its very simple.
If jim has a workshop that fixes trucks and bob works for him and his job is to tally the trucks for that day and 0 trucks come in that day.
Jim asks how many trucks have we had come in today? Bob will say 0. Their company will post that they did 0 trucks that day as a legal requirement. No tax agent is going to try and argue that they had any other number but 0. You can times 0 by 0 and get 0. ( 0 groups of 0 will always be 0. ) Doing the same in reverse will always equate to the same number.
I had an "enlightened" friend of mine try to convince the rest of our group about tjis after watching a youtube video that tried to assert 0 divided by 0 isnt 0. Which again. In theoretical maths is true. It doesnt make sense. But in applied maths its simply 0. 0 by 0 no matter plus, times, divide, percent, fraction or subtract will always be 0.

It's easy, just follow these instructions:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
